A few years back there was an incident in Delhi when a deranged man fell in a lion's cage. Lion ended up killing the man. There was a theory that some people suggested that that the lion might have actually been trying to save the man because as soon as the man had fallen in the animal's pit, people around the pit had started throwing stones to keep the lion away. Lion probably thought that the humans were throwing stones at the man in the pit and the lion was trying to save the man by taking the man away. The only issue being that the way lion picked the man is the way it would have picked its cubs -- using its big paws on the man's head. That ended up killing the man.
So, well it could have been either the man or the lion that could have died. Understandably, both the lives actually truly matter and losing either one of the lives in this innocent accident would be a bad thing. In the man-lion situation, we could still say that the man was responsible for his actions but in the child-gorilla situation, well you know a kid cannot be blamed as much as a grown up man would be.
And the thing is that gorilla's family/friends would not come around to sue the authorities, whereas the kids' kins might.
