KI & KA Movie Review

Rating: 2.5/5 Stars (Two and half stars)

Star Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor

Director: R. Balki

What's Good: A beautiful and modern world chemistry between Kareena and Arjun. A brave concept and great performances by the leads help you to enjoy the film.

What's Bad: Weak execution of such a fine concept or issue combined with a directionless storyline. The story loses its focus and just goes haywire.

Loo Break: Interval is fine.

Watch or Not?: I would not recommend this movie. Although, it has a good topic of the modern world, it doesn't do justice to it. So, avoid it.

Kia (Kareena Kapoor) is an aggressive and aspiring corporate big shot, having a grand vision to be the CEO of a company. She is always super busy and believes in being an independent woman, not to be shadowed by men.

Contrary to her, we have Kabir (Arjun Kapoor) who is a son of a reputed businessman in Delhi. Kabir is a topper of IIM-B but has no interest in business or his father's monetary legacy. He is fond of his late mother and wants to be like her, managing daily household activities which he thinks are equally important as working in the office. Kabir also doesn't believe in wasting his life in the name of career.

So now, Ki and Ka first meet at some random place and click instantly. They start liking each other and even decide to marry. After some heavy arguments, the couple agrees that Kabir will do all the household work which he always wanted to and Kia will follow her corporate dream. But, on the course of this gender role reversal, there are harsh hurdles awaiting.

Societal views, perception of people, personal battles and misunderstandings will show whether the couple can stand true to their intentions.

Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor in a still from movie Ki And Ka'

Ki And Ka Review: Script Analysis

The major reason of Ki And Ka's disappointment is the script. The story starts off very well, depicting the views of both Kabir and Kia but their love connection has been shown hurriedly. However, their married life and adjustments for each other are narrated spontaneously, making the first half entertaining yet curious.

What troubled me is that when the story had the best chance to show the debate of gender role reversal during the house party scene, it completely missed it. This could have been the core moment of the movie but the script degraded it big time.

The 2nd half of the film just goes haywire. All the hard work that was put in to build the plot gets washed away with a senseless chaos. Understand this, when a man is doing a woman's job and vice versa, society and the people around you will always criticize and protest first. The story has never shown that criticism and debate. Only the family members are shown doing it.

Additionally, even the office members don't enquire much about Kia's husband and when they get to know about his household work, they act like this is a regular stuff. Instead of focusing on the crux, the story emphasizes on Ki and Ka's personal battles and jealousy.

The end seemed too sweet to be true.

Ki And Ka Review: Star Performance

Kareena Kapoor as Kia is simply powerful. She looks beautiful, charming and fun. Her sharp dialogue delivery makes her the perfect corporate manager who is arrogant and aggressive.

Arjun Kapoor as Kabir has done a justifiable job. I would say, his character could have been much more enjoyable if he could have brought in more intensity in his acting. His dialogue delivery is not effective. But, overall he gives a fair treatment to the role.

Swaroop Sampat is great as Kia's mother and her casual mother character adds a light humour to the plot.

Rajit Kapur is as always spot-on. In a short time, he delivers a noticeable job as Kabir's father.

Ki And Ka Review: Music, Direction

R. Balki has given us the cinematic masterpiece Cheeni Kum which had encircled the sensitive issue of adult marriage. This time he couldn't repeat the history. Ki And Ka's storytelling was not impressive by his standard. How can a director of his stature lose control on his film in the 2nd half?

What didn't work in favour of R. Balki's direction is he never tried to show us what society as a whole will talk about such concept.

Music of Ki And Ka is delightful. The songs are fun, thoughtful and are placed at the right time. Background score gets absorbed well with the story.

Ki And Ka Review: The Last Word

Ki And Ka is a brave attempt to bring in the issue of a gender role reversal but the story fails to keep you engaged. The film never reaches a conclusion of the concept and loses its focus. Despite the impressive performances by the leads, the movie simply disappoints. My rating: 2.5/5

Almost every second Bollywood film claims to be different and zara hat ke in their story and presentation. While there are few films that live upto the promise of being 'different', there are others which land up being damp squibs. This week's release is the Arjun Kapoor - Kareena Kapoor starrer KI & KA, a film about gender differences and breaking stereotypes. Unlike the quintessential hero that Bollywood has witnessed so far, this film is an attempt to change the perception about many things. Does KI & KA become successful in being the agent of change or will it turn out to be a no-show at the Box-Office, let's analyse.

The film starts off with a wedding party that Kia (Kareena Kapoor Khan) is attending. Every time someone tells her to enjoy the party, she picks up her phone and acts as if she is talking. When she leaves the wedding midway, she reasons her departure by a small talk on the position of a woman in today's society that stuns everyone present there. The film then 'takes off' to her getting introduced to a sobbing Kabir Saini (Arjun Kapoor) on a flight. When asked about his sobbing, she discovers Kabir to be a Mama's boy, who is missing his dead mother because it is her birthday. A few meetings later, Kia understands Kabir's reason to be non-ambitious while Kabir understands Kia's goals and aims in her life in the corporate race. One fine day, a train-passionate Kabir lands up proposing to Kia in a toy train yard, post which she gets him introduced to her broad minded mother (Swaroop Sampat). While introducing him to her mother, Kia states Kabir's ambition to be a 'house-husband' and run the family and his selfless support in helping her fly in the corporate world. The couple gets married and begin their unusual journey. While Kabir takes to the household chores (including spying on the maid) like a fish to water, Kia starts inching towards the realisation of her ambitions. Being extremely intrigued by Kabir, Kia's colleagues express their desire to meet him. Amidst that get-together, an initially reluctant Kia later reveals Kabir being a 'house-husband'. What follows after that are offers galore for Kabir who becomes 'the most wanted munda' all over the place, right from the TV shows, cookery shows and even the housewives in the neighborhood who want to slim down through his organic diet charts and workouts. One day, when Kia is abroad for a business meeting in Dubai, Kabir flies down to Mumbai on the invitation of 'an extremely impressed' Jaya Bachchan and a bitter Amitabh Bachchan, Kia's mother gets admitted in the hospital for low blood pressure. Because of his meeting with the Bachchans, Kabir puts his mobile on a silent mode and lands up missing as many as 20 calls from Kia and her mother. What follows after that is a big showdown in the form of Kia's outburst. Does Kabir walk out of Kia's life, does Kia ever realise her mistake towards Kabir and apologise, does the couple ever meet and live a happy family is what forms the rest of the story.

One really needs to applaud the film's writer- director R. Balki, who has dared to live up to the term of 'being different' with this film. With this film, he has tried to redefine the quintessential 'hero' that the silver screen has witnessed so far. The best part about the screenplay is that it just does not come across as superficial at any point. The film, in totality, has been wonderfully conceived, beautifully written and splendidly enacted by the starcast! Besides it successfully conveys a powerful message. All of R. Balki's earlier films like CHEENI KUM, PAA and SHAMITABH, despite having quirky storylines, never challenged the obvious. But, with KI & KA, R. Balki challenges the stereotypical role of a husband and a wife in the society. In simple words, one can say that KI & KA has traces of the Amitabh-Jaya starrer ABHIMAAN minus the melodrama.

The film has its share of blemishes as it slows down in the second half but picks up pace in time towards the climax. There are certain places where the story seems to lag.

As for the performances, the film totally belongs to Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Arjun Kapoor is mighty impressive in the film and has carried the film on his strong shoulders. He gives a balanced performance and never goes overboard. His character is quite affable and he will definitely have an increased female fanbase after this film. Kareena Kapoor Khan on the other hand looks perfect as the strong head corporate lady. She has stayed away from her usual glamorous look in this film and yet looks stylish. She has portrayed the character of an ambitious woman brilliantly. The scenes of her emotional outburst in the climax are very impressive. Arjun and Kareena look very compatible as a couple onscreen. Balki has also handled the age factor well showing Kareena to be a few years older than Arjun. The veteran actress Swaroop Sampat exudes the same freshness as ever. Her endearing screen presence and persona simply lights up the screen every time she appears. Here, a special mention should also go to Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. Though the couple play themselves in the film, they manage to impress thoroughly in their cameo.

While the film's music (Ilaiyaraaja) is a letdown (except for the 'High Heels' track), the background is decent, but tends to go a little off from the proceedings at times. The film's cinematography (P.C. Sreeram) is average. There are times in the film where the camera movements are too shaky and distract the viewer especially during Kareena's outburst in the end. The film does boast of crisp editing (Chandan Arora).

On the whole, KI & KA is a cleverly crafted feel-good film that packs all the emotions. Though it has strong performances by both Arjun and Kareena, the film is bound to draw extreme reactions from the orthodox audiences who may find the premise difficult to digest. It is an urban progressive film and should appeal more to women and young married couples.

Ki and Ka' review: Arjun, Kareena power through, but the film tries too hard to be cool

What would happen if a couple reversed socially accepted roles within their marriage? Would their relationship survive societal opprobrium, ridicule and personal insecurities if he were to be a stay-at-home spouse and she the breadwinner?

These questions that form the starting point of Ki & Ka are no doubt intriguing. They are ever relevant too, in a world that upholds stereotypical gender roles within households, with horribly regressive expressions such as "she wears the pants". India has its own backward vocabulary, like that pejorative term for a man who has the courage to cock a snook atThe latter phrase comes up in Ki & Ka starring Kareena Kapoor Khan as Kia, an ambitious and successful young marketing pro who feels marriage is designed to destroy women's careers by placing the onus of household management on the wife. When she meets Kabir (Arjun Kapoor), whose sole goal in life is to run a house (or be the "artist" his mother was, as he puts it), it is a perfect fit.

They fall in love. They marry. He cooks, cleans and supports her from home. She becomes a VP in her company and supports him financially. Cracks appear. Tensions arise. They fight. They make up. They move on.

The plot is not unconvincing. After all, unspoken power equations in most homes are governed by who earns money and who does not. Many of the individual episodes in the film are independently believable in the way they deal with the rarely explored, tricky territory Kia and Kabir are treading.

It is imaginable, for instance, that Kia would initially be embarrassed to tell her colleagues that Kabir is a househusband. Many modern-day stay-at-home wives struggle with the perennial question, "What do you do?" Similarly, it might indeed be awkward to handle "what does your husband do?" when he does not do what is socially expected of him.

There is plenty of humour too in the film, especially in the first half.

Where Ki & Ka suffers is in the narrative's failure to weave each of these passages smoothly together. The result is a patchy, episodic feel.

Something like this. (Spoiler alert!) Episode 1: boy explains notion of their proposed relationship to girl (ergo, to audience) and establishes his liberalism. Episode 2: boy and girl meet each others' parent/s. Episode 3: boy establishes his prowess in running house. Episode 4: boy is seen in scenarios usually populated by women in films and real life, such as kitty parties and afternoon shopping sprees. Episode 5: financial scare. Episode 6: pregnancy scare. Episode 7: fissures. And so on.

The film is so taken in by its concept that it rarely rises above it to become a fully fleshed out story about fully fleshed out people. This is in keeping with adman-turned-writer-director R. Balki's body of work so far. He is a concepts man.

After the success of his first film Cheeni Kum, a smartly done older-man-younger-woman romance, Balki has been favouring concepts and gimmicks over stories and soul. His second film originated when he was struck by the thought of casting Amitabh Bachchan as the screen son of a character played by his real-life son. The outcome was an awkwardly executed Paa in which Bachchan Senior was a child with progeria, a rare genetic condition with symptoms resembling aspects of ageing, while Abhishek Bachchan played his Dad.

Shamitabh followed, in which the Big B starred as a down-and-out actor lending his voice - yes, that famous baritone - to a mute acting aspirant (Dhanush). It was a tiresome testament to Balki's Bachchan fanhood which, by the way, he has brought to this film too. The latest concept he has latched on to is gender role reversals.

It is unfortunate that a film taking a progressive position on man-woman relations should resort to clichs to elicit laughs, possibly to soften the blow to members of the audience who might be uncomfortable at the sight of a mainstream male star playing a stay-at-home husband. There can be no other explanation for visual imagery like Kabir wearing a mangalsutra on his wrist or Kabir in red high-heeled shoes in the closing song, 'High heels te nachche'. What is that if not another version of the "she wears the pants" triteness?

Besides, to emphasise a point, Ki & Ka also sporadically gets characters to do and say things that are completely out of character. For instance, Kabir's father's aggressive, unkind reaction to their announcement of marriage is credibly handled, but Kia's mother's initial comments seem contrived. She asks him if he is a freeloader, a query that seems solely planted in the script to give Kabir an opportunity to ask her if she would have asked the same question to a prospective bride of a hypothetical son if the girl had expressed a desire to be a stay-at-home wife. I'm not saying a potential mother-in-law would not behave in this fashion. Point is, this conversation is inconsistent with this particular potential mother-in-law's characterisation since she later turns out to be a genuine, out-and-out liberal, possibly more so than Kia.

Also, who are these Indian parents who seem to appear only in Hindi films to ask their daughters and future sons-in-law to their faces whether they have had sex because it's "important before commitment"? It is as if the filmmaker is screaming into our faces: Look, look, see how cool I've made this Mommy! But wait, she's a social worker. Phir toh that explains everything, no?

In its denouement, Ki & Ka draws some rather simplistic conclusions about gender oppression. Still, it would be unwise to brush this film aside, since a lot of its messaging is positive and radical, not just by Bollywood standards but by Indian social norms at large. Whatever be Ki & Ka's follies, it is still interesting that a mainstream filmmaker thought it fit to make a film with commercially successful stars about a man who wants to be a stay-at-home husband and his careerist wife.

Kareena is the pick of the cast. She is particularly good in her emotionally over-wrought scenes. It is such a joy to see her playing a substantial role after a string of marginal parts in male-centric films. It is also nice to see her deservedly getting top billing in the credits, which is uncommon for women in Bollywood even today, except for the female leads of heroine-centric films.

Ki & Ka's camera team and lighting technicians though have done the actress a great injustice. So many clear views of her bleached facial hair? We are not supposed to notice that, people! A word about Kia's wardrobe. After 2014's Bewakoofiyaan starring Sonam Kapoor and PK with Anushka Sharma, here's another film that hits the nail on the head with its styling of a female professional.

Arjun's brooding intensity is always attractive, but he has delivered better performances in the past. Hats off to this youngster though for his experimental chromosome, which has led to the wide variety of characters he has notched up in his filmography in just a four-year-long career.

Swaroop Sampat, who plays Kia's mother in Ki & Ka, is cute and likeable but she just cannot act. It does not matter, because her presence in the film brings up a wave of nostalgia for a childhood spent viewing Yeh jo hai zindagi on TV with the family every Friday.

The production design too is noteworthy. If you are a train buff, you might want to watch this film simply for the manner in which Kabir redecorates his house.

Increasing numbers of Indian women are refusing to throttle their professional ambitions in favour of managing a home, while a minuscule number of Indian men are opting to take on roles traditionally deemed to be a feminine preserve. In this scenario, a romcom on a stay-at-home husband is very pertinent.

Large swathes of Ki & Ka are fun, considerable sections of it are unexpectedly broad-minded, path-breaking for Bollywood and insightful. The problem is that we can section it off in this fashion. Ultimately, what fails the film is its mixed messaging and choppy texture.

Ki & Ka - Instant Recipe Low on Taste.

Director R. Balki comes with a quirky idea of changing roles yet he makes them go stereotypes in their execution without cultivating an idea to the next level. Serving you an instant recipe low on taste.

Ki bumps into Ka in a plane; an instant chemistry is being forced. The only ambition Ka has is to become a House-Husband taking care of the daily chores; that even todays housewives wont dream off. He does it brilliantly and is unapologetic; son of a big builder who is least interested in taking the family business ahead; has lost his mom and aspires to be like his mom. The way he leaves his ki on the dinner table probably a no man would do as the sheer reason doesn't turn out to be convincing; it seemed absurd behavior and Ki falls for this ka. Ki makes several calls seeking apology. Next you see a kiss making a path for an instant marriage over a dull song. They marry instantly with the humor that was only witnessed in the trailers. Both the Kapoor's fail to create the chemistry a love marriage should bring-in; probably that's where the story suffers too towards the second half; where the only clash they have to take the plot ahead was their EGO making them perform stereotype.

Mr. Ki gets an opportunity from Mrs. Ka's ad agency to do an interview; that unveils what a great speaker he is; leading him to TEDx Talks; making him popular -the most wanted Munda. So much so that even Jaya Bachchan wants to meet this guy watching his interview on television debating with BigB on changing roles. Mr. Ki is invited at BigB's house for nothing but to have a dinner over some background noise not score with hardly any conversation a forced integration that doesn't add any value on the celluloid, that's the scene you can watch it on any of the Sunday live outside Big-B's bungalow.

Ki refers another bride as a "Khamba" just a pillar of strength with no ambition or whatsoever. She goes loud saying "Main Khamba nahi banna chahti"- Ki & Ka really needed a good dialogue writer; good music director, a good editor and above all a good story-writer.

Kareena Kapoor has been playing Sonakshi Sinha since quite some time in her recent movies; fortunately gets a role that is huge on length but low on content; she is been deprived of promising characters and shall soon fade off like Urmila, Rani and very recent Sonakshi too. Arjun Kapoor has tried hard to fit in the role that doesn't has much meat to it.

Ki And Ka Movie Review

Saibal Chatterjee | Friday, April 01, 2016

SPOILERS AHEAD

The hero and the heroine of Ki And Ka share a birthday - April 15. So when they decide to marry, the couple choses the same date as D-Day.

While they are at it, one of them reminds the audience that the Titanic, too, sank on April 15.

How very fitting! Ki And Ka, writer-director K Balki's fourth feature film, is all at sea as it tries to steer its ambitious concept to the shore.

A rom-com about a man who thinks nothing of wearing the mangalsutra in his marriage, it does no justice to the novelty of the theme.

Ki And Ka has a six hundred pound gorilla of an idea to work with, but it is so leaden-footed and whimsical that it stomps its way through two hours and a bit without getting anywhere near its destination.

The male protagonist, 27-year-old Kabir Bansal (Arjun Kapoor), has no interest in the wealth of his realtor-father (Rajit Kapur. He aspires to be like his departed mom, a homemaker.

A B-school topper, he is determined to spare himself the pain of faaltu mehnat (worthless hard work).

The film's heroine, Kia, three years his senior, is a marketing manager with an FMCG company. A 'corporate robot', she is intent on climbing the corporate ladder in a hurry.

The two meet on a Chandigarh-Delhi flight. It's Kabir's mom's birthday and he tearfully mopes over her absence.

Kia's heart melts at the sight and they strike up a conversation. Over the next few scenes, they jibber-jabber incessantly and figure out that they complement each other.

They get hitched, pronto. The rest is all downhill. Ki And Ka is laboured, lightweight and lacklustre.

It is pulled down by a persistent air of frivolity despite all its well-meaning PC speak on gender equality and freedom of choice.

Kia and Kabir are more set-in-their-ways caricatures than believable characters and, therefore, never interesting enough.

The screenplay is riddled with details that border on the illogical.

It is difficult to fathom, for instance, exactly why an adult male's obsession with trains would be so overpowering as to drive him to turn his home into a railway museum.

Apart from probably serving the purpose of providing an insight into Kabir's childlike mindset and of enhancing the visual design of the film, this aspect of his personality gives the director a pretext to shoot long passages in the National Rail Museum and the Rewari Loco Shed.

And, of course, it allows food to arrive at the dining table on a toy train that chugs back and forth from the kitchen.

Given Kia's high-flying ways, it might appear that money is no constraint for the couple: Kabir refurnishes the entire rented apartment overnight without losing any sleep.

But when they are compelled to think of buying out the flat, they go into a tizzy over the state of their finances and the need to take a housing loan.

We do catch Kabir fretting over the pricing of the health food variants of milk and cereals, but never for a moment does the couple come across as cash-strapped.

But their plan works to perfection because Kabir is only too happy to be a stay-at-home hubby.

He does a great job of keeping a watch on his wife and his mother-in-law's diet, supervising the maid, doing the cleaning and the shopping, and even hosting kitty parties when push comes to shove.

That leaves the ambitious Kia to pursue and achieve her goal of becoming the fulcrum of the boardroom.

But even as her meteoric rise attracts the media spotlight, her husband becomes a social celeb in his right for his nonconformity.

Kia - and this is about the only juncture in the film where something actually happens - gets the jimmies and the carefully cultivated connubial relationship comes under severe strain. That, in a nutshell, is Ki And Ka.

But barring a short portion featuring Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan (as themselves) discussing how things would have turned out had the latter had not given up her acting career for the sake of the family, there is little in here that manages to grab attention.

The two leads smooch a great deal and are pretty active between the sheets. But somehow, owing to the lack of chemistry between Arjun and Kareena, they do not set the screen on fire.

A concept film that has a lot to say - Ki And Ka actually succeeds in getting a few of its points in edgewise - but the writing is below-par.

As a consequence, Ki And Ka is like a string of patched-together monosyllables that never attain sustained coherence.

In seeking to break gender stereotypes, the film actually ends up reinforcing them.

The director isn't content with establishing that Kabir is not a freak and like all 'normal' men, loves women and whiskey.

He throws in a sequence in which the hero bashes up three goons who make crude passes at his wife. Kia instantly applauds her hubby's "Dharmendra wala side".

Ki And Ka has prettified images (cinematographer: P.C. Sreeram) and a flawless ad-film veneer. Both tend to draw attention away from the travails of an unconventional marriage that the film wants the audience to focus on.

All through the film, sundry characters, including Kia's widowed social activist-mother (Swaroop Sampat), allude to pillars that hold up buildings while talking about the institution of marriage.

Too much talk and very little plot progression put the skids under the film. Ki And Ka goes belly up pretty quickly never to recover fully.

Verdict: With its promising premise undermined by erratic execution, Ki And Ka is only intermittently watchable.

Ki & Ka - Movie Review
01 Apr, 2016 | Divya Solgama

Unique Perspective of Role-Reversal'

In the year 1942, director Keshavrao Dhaibar came up with an unusual film Ulti Ganga', where he tried to show the after effects when gender roles get reversed in the world. The movie was ahead of its time and was presented in a hilarious manner. The makers narrated a tale of such a world where both the sexes had interchanged their roles. Sadly, besides basic information there is nothing left of this masterpiece and is among the most wanted missing Indian cinema from our country. Something similar was attempted in few more films including Itni Si Baat' (1981) starring Sanjeev Kumar and Moushumi Chatterjee and a T.V serial Mr Ya Mrs' starring Jayant Kriplani and Archana Puran Singh. These movies were way below the brilliance of Ulti Ganga' as it narrated a tale of a particular couple only. In Itni Si Baat' the husband and wife exchange their roles due to an ego fight, while in Mr Ya Mrs' they agree to do the same on their personal likings. Decades later R.Balki comes back with yet another take on the role reversals in form of Ki & Ka', placed in today's times. So let's find out, whether Ki & Ka' will give us yet another path breaking eye opening film or might end up among all such movies where there is nothing else to offer besides the different concept.

Ki & Ka' is a story of an ambitious marketing executive Kia (Kareena Kapoor) who dreams of achieving the best in the corporate world. One fine day Kia meets Kabir (Arjun Kapoor), who despite of being a rich man's son wants to follow the footsteps of his mother and want to live a life as a home maker. Opposites attracts and finally Kabir and Kia get married over a mutual agreement that Kia will fulfil the duties of a husband by financially supporting them and Kabir will take care of the house just like a homemaker. Things sail smoothly for a while until, a phase where jealousy and insecurity starts to overpower one of them. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

The story basic shades similar to the popular TV series from the eighties - Mr Ya Mrs' and one can find some shades of Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bahaduri's classic film Abhimaan'. The one liner story idea is brilliantly interesting. There is high amount of curiosity related to the role reversal of the main protagonist. The movie is flooded with many wonderful moments like Kareena-Arjun's first meet and sharing their dreams to each other, Kareena trying to know everything about Arjun followed by the same from Arjun's side, Arjun and Kareena on a date at railway museum sharing their details followed by Arjun proposing her, Kareena making Arjun meet her mother Swaroop Sampat for their marriage approval, Arjun performing first day's duties as a house husband, Arjun's household activities, Arjun giving interviews followed by his rise in terms of popularity, Swaroop Sampat's advice and Jaya Bachchan's letter to Kareena and few more. These scenes keep you indulged in the film along with one key sequence featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. This track is enjoyable, enriching and one of the sweetest moment of the film. Sadly, these great moments get diluted due to weak screenplay and lack of dramatic moments in the film, especially in the second half of the film. The repetitive gender comments tend to bore you after a while. Few scenes like the whole Dubai part or Kareena's overreaction to pregnancy followed by her whole jealousy track, were not at all justified nor relevant with the flow of the film. There was no hardship in the entire film as everything sails smoothly in this film. The climax is the lamest part of the film and required something more to rise above and leave a memorable impression of the film. The writers could have done much more with this superb idea, which had full potential of becoming a great film by its own. The dialogues are witty as well as filmy at times. The movie has overdose of in-film brand endorsement of more than a dozen products at frequent intervals. The cinematography is not up to the mark. Bad zooming and abrupt cuts irritates you to the fullest.

Music of Ki & Ka' is good with some chartbuster songs like High Heels' and Most Wanted Munda'. Ji Huzoori' and Foolishq' goes well with the flow of the film.

Director R Balki is known for giving us some great films like Cheeni Kum' and Paa' followed by extracting some great performances in Shamitabh'. Here, in Ki & Ka' he sets up an interesting tale which has a huge novelty factor attached to it. He also manages to extract some good performances from the lead actors. The movie has its heart and soul in place but, has been stretched to the fullest. It also lacks the conviction factor at times and fails to justify the unnecessary problematic scenes of the film. The repetitive scenes and overdose of gender equality tends to irritate you after a point.

Arjun Kapoor has a great character and he tries hard to match up to its level. Though he looks super bulky and out of place at times. Kareena Kapoor looks great and slips easily in her half-baked character. She displays her expertise as an actress and does full justice to her role. Swaroop Sampat is fantastic and would have loved to see more of her. Rajit Kapoor hams to the fullest. Cameo by Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan is outstanding.

So on an overall basis, Ki & Ka' is a unique perspective of role reversal from the eyes of R.Balki. It has plenty of good moments to cherish along with some fine performances. The flow gets ruined by weak screenplay, unwanted tracks and repetitive elements. This over stretched film fails to end up being among R.Balki's top films.
