Honestly speaking, Neerja as a movie is way more special for me. It's so positive and inspiring at every level . It shakes you and leaves you in a thinking mode. Neerja's charecter is one of those which you'll always carry with you and the positive influence it has on you is much greater. And the fact, that Sonam lived such a character so gracefully will always make me choose it over Piku which didn't really move me as such.
For me it's movie in an entirety that works and not just a character and the acting. Therefore, If I have to compare I'll have to choose a movie which I loved equally, which would probably be a Queen or English Vinglish. And in comparision to them..I'd rate Kangana higher than Sonam. I hope I made sense.

I am in the minority here who doesn't think that the presence of AB and Irrfan can belittle a fantastic performance by Deepika in the film. The common link between both the films I think is the subtlety of the characters and how both the actors have performed accordingly to what the characters demanded. And i found Deepika better for the small nuances she does here and there throughout the film. Like those small looks she gives at the breakfast table, etc.. And also the mileu was very much present in Deepika's portrayal of Piku..Like I could only see the bong Piku in her and not the South Indian Deepika. This is something I found missing in Sonam's portrayal of Neerja... Like at many places she appeared to be herself and not the character (maybe due to her accent or something).. I mean i was missing some small nuances at places in Neerja which i think could have added a lot more to her portrayal of Neerja, though she did give a really good performance.

So yeah, as an independent performance, Sonam was great in Neerja but if compared to Piku, I think Deepika did a better job.

And just like how people find it hard to appreciate Deepika and her contirbution to the film just because it also stars Amitabh and Irrfan, should we also stop appreciating Sonam's contirbution to the film just because it's based on a braveheart and already has that emotional dramatic connect with the audience?

We already know that Amitabh and Irrfan are amazing actors and Neerja is already an emotionally touching story which will click with the audiences if you cast any good actress but inspite of all this, both Deepika and Sonam have given something of their own, their own contirbution which makes the films even better.

highly disagree. many ppl in piku reviews said deepika was all screaming and not at all looking like a Bengali, same u say sonam was herself and her accent.i found deepika in first half very loud , second half was much better. but still its my view . not every one has to agree with. I found sonam was fit for Neerja ,though I was feeling low but when review start coming every body was praising her.
I also think both piku and neerja movies are un comparable.

I went and saw that movie Piku in cinema hall, in the beginning it was entertaining but after a while got tired of all constipation talks was counting min to end. To me I did not find Deepika's character that appealing she was such a one note character. While AB Sr despite playing a weird character brought different shades that was enjoyable.

Neerja was an out and out Sonam movie.

Don't compare apple with oranges. Let deepika do a movie without any strong cast and carry the movie on her shoulders to success, then we compare.

Huh? Neerja's supporting actors are incredibly talented, just like Piku's supporting cast.

Piku. It was so so relatable to see her with family, friend or aunt or even the drivers ( her child!)
A real annoying person. But still responsible n never pitiable.
Never felt glamorous diva vibe

Deepika in Piku. Her dialog delivery was fine in this one too and she looked stunning

Deepika in Piku was consistently and delightfully in charachter. She also managed to bring in nuances into the role, something only a high-caliber performer can do. The expressions, the emoting and dialogue-delivery were all pitch-perfect.
Though Neerja moved me more as a film, Sonam hasn't managed that in Neerja. There are times when she could have done better. She emotes well, but could have done better.

Sonam has a long way to go bfeore she reaches DP's ;evel.

Oh and yes Sonam's accent is horrible! Can't believe she grew up in a Hindi speaking family 🤢

A month ago this poll would have been:

Deepika 50 votes
Sonam 3 votes

The comments would have been:

Sonam is a joke and can't act to save her life.

Gotta love the unexpected

+1 to that. I started watching this movie and could not go pass first 20 min, highly over rated movie.

Would Piku have worked commercially if it released today?

Back in the 2010s, all kinds of movies co-existed on the big screen. In fact, in 2012, there was a surfeit of mid-budget, content-driven films...
