30 years back, a Pan Am flight was hijacked in Karachi and a 23 year old ordinary young girl from the bylanes of Mumbai became this inspirational hero to many Indians worldwide. That woman was Neerja Bhanot. Three decades later when Ram Madhvani decided to make a film on her tryst with the terrorists and sequence the entire happenings of the hijack, focusing on Neerja's valiant effort to save 359 lives on the dreaded flight, he had a winning film in hand.
Sonam Kapoor stepped into the shoes of Bhanot effortlessly and has received immense adulation for her perfect portrayal of the brave heart in the biopic. While everyone is heaping praises on the cast and crew for making a film like Neerja, one of the crew members Nupoor Abrol who was present on the flight when the hijack happened has now hit back at the makers for wrong portrayal of the entire incident.
On a Facebook post, Nupoor commented, "Yes, truly a very difficult moment. But also a difficult moment for all those flight attendants to accept the movie for what it is unfairly propagating. Neerja was a wonderful person and I think even her soul today would cringe at taking this undeserved adulation. Not fair to the FA's who have in reality faced their ordeal!"
She further continued, "Oh no! I was incidental in that plot. It was Astrid, Sherene, Sunshine and off course Massey who were the real heroes of the day. I am glad today I can show my gratitude to them."
Neerja was shot while protecting three kids from the terrorists. Although she managed to save 359 lives on the plane, she could not survive herself. Now, all this was shown in the film. But what Nupoor has written is completely shocking. We wonder how the makers will respond to this!
