ranbir is going through a bad phase correct, but i also think varun, ranveer recent successes emphasise that even more. whn your competition is riding high on success, ofcourse its gonna make ranbir's failures seem more magnified, but I think ranbir is a good actor, however in today's day you need to have a defined commercial image in order for audience to identify w/ u. hence, i think if ranbir did another good quality movie a la wake up sid or rocket singh with small budget and worked on setting up a strong image, then it might work.
that said, every actor goes through a low, after a high and its key to go through that, so you know what works and what doesnt. and its unfortunate that his movies failed, but his movies on paper (barring Roy) sound good. besharam with mom and dad, after YJHD, specially with sallu masala movies being so popular, seemed like a no brainer to expand his commercial presence. it did get 20cr + opening, something none of the new gen has managed to do. bombay velvet seems like a good idea on paper, and post besharam fiasco, would be the "different" movie that audience may seek from biru, but the movie was rife was controversy and at the end, no one was bothered to promote it. Tamasha was a good comeback -imitiaz always manages to extract a good performance and if the budget was lower, surely it would have been known as a bigger hit.
i think at the end, ranbir needs to find his commerical space, and then work in his different/edgy movies, but cannot seem to combine both, with jarring back to back films, leaving audience confused as to what to expet from him. ppl watch chris prat, for example based on his roles in guardians, then jurassic, not wtch his jurassic based on parks and recreation.
