In many films I notice people playing specific religion or region based characters but it is not always authentic.
There are many best actor winners who simply MANGLE the identity of the character. Like Kajol in K3G, which was a SHAME and JOKE in name of Punjabi characters.
When I see flawed attempts praised as good it makes me wonder how many flawed portrayals of other cultures have we seen and don't know about.
Usually we laugh it off with friends. I often asked friends from South if the Hindi film portrayals were right and they would completely deny it and laugh it off. I myself have had to give clarifications at times on how Punjabis are like or not. Films do not always get it right even with the best of actors.
Sorry but I couldn't appreciate Aamir's expressions because his attempts at passing off as Punjabi seemed caricaturish and were distracting. Even portrayal of his family is factually wrong. So I admit I can't appreciate AK's performance in it. Though I love RDB as a film.
The last actor who indeed got into skin of characters was Dilip Kumar. Trust me, you can't believe this guy was not an actual villager from UP! He spoke the dialect as effortlessly as any native in Ganga Jumna.
So in my opinion, you really have to fit in perfectly before a performance is considered great.
I didn't deviate for comparison to SRK or others. But whenever RDB and some other films are brought up, I am compelled to point out this authenticity issue and poor reviewing by critics.
