Ego can get the biggest giants to crumble to the ground. That is one thing that should never get in between your personal or professional life. A person's ego can grow to such extend that it can make an individual hollow from within, without the person getting to know at all. And in case you are dependent on another individual for the possession you have reached in life, then your definitely should go flying out of the window. R. Balki'sShamitabh deals with a story about ego clashes between two men who can't live with each other, but can't let go of each other too.

Shamitabh is film that is all about, amazing performance, amazing performance and amazing performance. What less can you expect when you have exceptionally talented actors likeAmitabh Bachchan and Dhanushcoming on screen together.Amitabh Bachchan essays the character of Amitabh Sinha, in the film, who is an extremely frustrated man, owing to his failure to be an actor. For a person like Mr. Bachchan, who is known to be very docile and calm, to play a character who is frustrated drunken man was fun to watch. The best part is that this comes so naturally to him, that not even for a split second in the film, would one feel it's the Big B on screen. His wayward walking, his wobbly tongue while he speaks, makes is very believable that he is drunk quite literally. He is surely the epitome to great personality, talent and sheer excellence in the field of acting.

Dhanush - a man with a small frame, but roars on the screen. He plays the central character ofShamitabh in the film, is a struggling actor who tries to make it into Bollywood, but is ridiculed because of his disability. Without a single dialogue, he portrays sheer magic in the film. Eventually your heart would go out to him. To make Amitabh's voice look graceful on himself, was quite the challenge Dhanush had to face, and he does it well and how! Dhanush is one actor who has and will continue to make his mark with his sheer talent.

The surprise element in the film isAkshara Haasan, who takes everyone by surprise. For a debutant she has done a brilliant job. She doesn't seem to shudder for a second, when she is alongside superstars like Mr. Bachchan andDhanush. She surely seems to have inherited her acting skills from such talented parents like Kamal Haasanand Sarika.

R. Balki yet again churns out another phenomenal piece of cinema and proves yet again, out of the box is simply out of the world. He continues to make light hearted yet fun filled movies like his earlier works: Cheeni Kum and Paa. Illayraja's music is simply splendid and one would definitely leave the cinema hall humming a tune or two from the album, like Pidly or even the title track of the film. The editing is crisp thus making the film only a little over than two hours. The movie does have a few loopholes but you tend to easily skip them because of the awesome cinema that you watch on screen.

All in all R. Balki's current offering, Shamitabh is a fresh feel for the movie goers with a plethora of amazing performances to look forward to. So this weekend its neither Dhanush nor Amitabh, its Shamitabh.

Dhanush first outing was good, lets see how this turns out. boy is good. and lambu is lambu.
here is another review...
TOI

Trust filmmaker R Balki (of Cheeni Kum and Paa fame) to attempt something different each time he is behind the camera. Shamitabh comes from his wild imagination; it's a story made out of Bachchan's popular voice and Dhanush's unconventional looks, both clubbed together in Shamitabh.

What works very well is the flow of the story. Danish (Dhanush) is a movie buff-turned-film star. The openings scenes show Danish as a young boy in a small town who is crazy about movies. He desperately wants to be an actor, he has the talent but what he doesn't have is the right look and he doesn't have a voice, still he heads to Mumbai. Askhara (Akshara Haasan) an assistant director spots Danish in trouble on a film set and for some reason best known to her, she goes out of her way to help him become a movie star. She and her doctor dad send him to Finland and with the help of something called live voice transfer technology Danish will now be heard but someone will have to speak for him on the side. Now all they need is a good voice, which can help him act in movies and stand out at the same time.

They come across Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), a drunkard who lives inside a cemetery and has a heavy voice. He agrees to lend Danish his voice but the problem is both have an ego, which won't take them far enough. They make him a brand, called Shamitabh combination of Danish + Amitabh which works well.

Akshara the bridge between the two egos now wants Danish to keep his ego aside and act in her film but Danish and Amitabh are too busy fighting.

Most of it works, a few things are not explained like why Akshara goes out of her way, takes help from her father for an unknown person.

What works is the unconventional story and Balki's style of story telling. This film displays Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush's talent, for fans of both these actors it's quite a treat.

Bachchan has quite a few scenes where he gets to perform and he does it like no one else can! Dhanush's simplicity works. Newcomer Akshara Haasan is cast well as a young assistant director and an aspiring filmmaker, she does a fine job.

Music by Illaiyaraaja is good both Piddly (sung by Amitabh Bachchan) and Sha Sha Sha Mi Mi Mi are good numbers. PC Sreeram adds his magic touch and makes it a good viewing experience.

R Balki holds the story together and keeps you entertained through this two hours and twenty minute film. The concept itself is quite different and works very well. Using Bachchan's popular voice seems like a brilliant idea.

My favorite dialogue from the film is "Ye awaaz to ek kutte ke mu se bhi achi lagegi" says Amitabh Bachchan with arrogance and anger.

Shamitabh is a treat for Amitabh fans!

Rating: 3/5 Stars (Three stars)

Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush, Akshara Haasan

Director: R. Balki

What's Good: Shamitabh is a novel idea and needs to be credited for its out of the box idea and presentation. If marveling an interesting plot was any less, Shamitabh raises the bar even higher with stellar performances from Dhanush and Amitabh Bachchan. The film comes with a much-needed fresh script in times of cheap South-Indian masala remakes, once again bringing back our faith in honest and thoughtful writing.

What's Bad: In the second half the film stretches into a dull plot that touches the mediocrity levels with unwanted twists. The addition of certain dramatic elements which bring high predictability in the plot spoil this otherwise brilliant effort.

Loo break: Depends on your urgency!

Watch or Not?: Shamitabh is definitely a one-time watch for its efforts to stand out in the industry that thrives on remakes and haphazard biopics. The film is a treat for all Amitabh Bachchan as well as Dhanush fans since the film in its true sense is a mixture of their solid excellence. I would say watch Shamitabh for the idea that it is built on and of course for the flawless performances.

this is from very chutiya site..bollywood life...don't take it seriously pls

The story, the performances and the dialogues work wonders for R Balki's latest film

After giving us heart stirring films like Cheeni Kum and Paa, director R Balki is back with yet another endearing film with an unlikely combination of Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush. Though Balki and his team did their best to keep the story under wraps, there were multiple rumours in the market about Shamitabh's plot. Being a Dhanush fan, I was eager to see how does he pull off a role that was first offered to Shah Rukh Khan. And more importantly, leaving the guessing games and rumours aside, I was really intrigued to find out what Shamitabh was all about. And as I stepped out of the theatre at the end, I had no doubt in my mind that Shamitabh will be one of the top best films of the year. Lets cut the chase and dive into the review.

What's it about:

A speech impaired boy, Daanish (Dhanush) from Igatpuri, dreams to become an actor since he was a kid. After his mother's demise, Daanish leaves for Mumbai to pursue his dream. There he has a chance encounter with assistant director Akshara (Akshara Haasan) who sees his true potential and wishes to help him. Through her father's doctor friend, Akshara gets to know about a technology using which the speech impaired can speak. A device is planted in Daanish's throat, which records the voice of the person speaking to him through an ear piece and plays it every time he opens his mouth. All he gotta do is lip sync with the voice! Akshara and Daanish then rope in a bumbling drunkard Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan) to be Daanish's voice. Daanish becomes Shamitabh, a superstar overnight and all the limelight hogged by Daanish makes Amitabh jealous. Soon ego clashes arise between the two and they split. But with the help of Akshara, they soon realise that they can't be successful without each others help and bury the hatchet. Meanwhile a nosy reporter finds out that Shamitabh aka Daanish is actually mute and Amitabh is lending his voice for him. Will the reporter expose the truth about Shamitabh? How will Daanish and Amitabh tackle this tricky situation forms the climax of the story.

What's good:

It is no doubt that Amitabh Bachchan is one of the finest actors in history of Indian cinema. But if you thought that the 71 year old has lot his touch, then think again as Big B proves that he has still got it in him to make the crowd hoot and cheer for him. Amitabh is excellent as a drunken voice artist who believes that he has a bigger hand in Shamitabh's superstardom. The veteran actor is at his quirky best, slurring some of the funniest line I have heard in recent times with great comic timing. If you thought Dhanush was really good in Raanjhanna, in Shamitabh, Dhanush will show his range and caliber as an actor. With no dialogues to mouth, Dhanush emotes with so much intensity such that he lights up screen with his charismatic presence. Akshara Haasan makes an impressive debut, playing her part of mediator between the two with great conviction. R Balki deserves a pat on his back for telling a unique story which is witty, funny, philosophical and endearing at the same time. Picturisation of Piddly song will leave you in splits. The light banter and leg pulling between Dhanush and Big B made my day. At first, Amitabh's voice from Dhanush's mouth sounded odd but later proved to be quite entertaining. Dhanush and Amitabh compliment each other really well, as I can't really choose who performed better. Since Big B is introduced as Shamitabh's valet Robert to rest of the world, it was a really nice gesture from the makers to put all the valet's names first in the end credits. Be ready for a climax that would give you a mild shock. Kudos to dialogue writers for dishing out such funny one liners that are peppered throughout the film.

What's bad:

I really can't pinpoint what's bad. But if I really had to say something bad, then the film's first five mins where all the industrywallas praise Shamitabh at a red carpet function is little dull and over the top. Climax left me jolted and made me wonder if it was really necessary for the filmmaker to end the film at such a note, as it spoils the mood for a brief moment.

What to do:

It is a rarity in Indian cinema to find a film that is both highly entertaining, thought provoking and clean at the same time. Backed by some powerhouse performances of Big B and Dhanush, Shamitabh is one of the finest films this year. Don't miss it. Do yourself a favour and go watch Shamitabh right way.

  1. #Shamitabh caters largely to an urban audience. A crisper version would've only enhanced the overall impact.

  2. taran adarsh @taran_adarsh

Dhanush stands up to the icon and that's a humungous achievement. His range as a terrific actor is too evident. #Shamitabh

Bollywood review: Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush leave Shamitabh' half baked

They make a great team, no doubt, but Balki's plot is unable to take it to greater heights

By

Published Thursday, February 05, 2015

Once upon a time his obsession for Bollywood's "biggest superstar" gave us the endearing Cheeni Kum', and later a hugely manipulative Paa', but none of his earlier movies quite prepares you for Shamitabh'. A movie that rides purely on director R Balki's excessive love for Amitabh Bachchan.

Only, now, the focus has shifted to his deep baritone voice. So, while his face doesn't appear in every other frame, his voice does.

We hear Amitabh whisper and scream, grunt and hiss, forcing us to clap in awe. We do, in fact, the first few times, but then it turns monotonous, taking the fun out of it.

If that wasn't enough, Balki even ropes in his "ex-flame" Rekha to mouth, "You are truly blessed with god's own voice" to sum it all up.

While it's a clever spin on his hero (Amitabh), Balki's unable to pull it through mostly because he's so enamoured by the actor, that he believes his voice is enough to captivate and thrill 165 minutes of screen time.

Had Balki invested more on his writing, and ordered Hemanti Sarkar to be ruthless on the editing desk, Shamitabh' would've ended into something quite fun.

Instead, it remains an indulgent, glossy fanboy movie, shot exquisitely by P C Sreeram.

While music maestro Ilaiyaraaja's tracks are hummable, and cool, it slows down the narrative, and lets childish conflicts creep in. "Kids in the nursery behave better than you," screeches the lady in black, ironically echoing our sentiment.

Shamitabh' is about two men - Danish and Amitabh, who both want to make it in Bollywood. One's lanky and lacks the typical Bollywood hero look, while the other is grey-haired, unkempt and obnoxious. Yet, they boast of talents that could collectively turn them into a superstar.

Film assistant Akshara unites them into Shamitabh', and lands them fame and riches. Only, their dream run is cut short after their egos clash.

The conflicts, although predictable, explores the issues that dubbing artists face in the film industry. Despite lending their voice, their faces are forgotten. While the concept might be alien to Bollywood, where actors lend their own voice to their screen images, down south its an ugly reality. It's a group, often sidelined, and one that Balki rightly puts on the spotlight.

It's his "unique technology", regardless of the disclaimer in the beginning, that we think is a bit too exaggerated and illogical.

Even the unimaginative product placements shake the texture and intent of the film further. Lifebuoy' turns into a movie about "killing germs and making people healthy", and Knorr' helps to nurse a sick friend.

"Is this scene or a soap?" the movie's Amitabh rightly points out.

Among the performers, Dhanush and Amitabh are each allowed to flaunt their acting chops, and they hold their own. Although it's no surprise that senior Bachchan will walk away with the top honour. Surely, Balki wouldn't have it any other way.

Amitabh's fairly unknown, chubby sidekick is equally earnest and delightful to watch. It's his fun take on his landlord' that evoked some genuine laughter. Akshara Haasan, in spite of boasting great acting genes, needs to finetune her act.

Balki's a good storyteller, but this one is blatantly calculating.

oh nooo taran didn't explode ...
2.5/5

Bollywood is one place which is always open to any kind of permutations and combinations. Be it the casting in the films or even the selection of the film's titles, Bollywood has seen it all happen! This week's release goes by the name of SHAMITABH, which when decoded, is the combination of Dhanu'sh' and 'Amitabh', who also happen to be the lead stars in the film, which is directed by R. Balki. Does the film live up to the hype? Let's analyze.

The film starts off with the star studded premiere of LIFEBUOY, the debut film of 'superstar' Daanish (Dhanush). And at the time of Q & A with the media persons, when a certain journalist asks him a certain question, this makes Daanish recall his journey from being a cinema-obsessed small town kid who was born dumb to what he is today, the superstar 'Shamitabh'. The journey also shows his desperate attempts to become a star, despite his handicap. As any other cinema fanatic, Daanish too seizes an opportunity to come to Mumbai to realize his dreams of being a 'star'... only to be shooed away from every studio he visits (read 'gatecrashes'). Seizing a perfect chance, he starts 'living' in an actor's vanity van! And when he gets caught by the security guards, he tries to explain his aspirations of being an actor, which makes all the security guards laugh at him. Amidst all this, the film's Assistant Director Akshara (Akshara Haasan) sees the burning passion in his eyes to become an actor, which impresses her to no extent. That's when she decides to help him realize his dreams and thus puts him through her doctor uncle, who in turn, suggests a certain technological breakthrough in medical science through which a dumb person can actually speak! But the only condition is that the voice won't be of his own but of another person. Thus starts the search for a 'perfect voice' for Daanish begins. After many a vocal auditions, it's finally the drunkard Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), whose voice Akshara and Daanish choose. The deal is signed with Amitabh which states that he will have to remain silent about all this and not utter a word to anyone, against which he will be paid handsomely for being Daanish's voice. Daanish, who then, rechristens himself as Shamitabh goes on to become an overnight sensation with a voice to match. Thus starts his journey into the skies. It is during this journey, when success actually goes into his head that he starts dictating terms to Amitabh, who also starts suffering from the same ego issues as Daanish. Amidst these clashes, there arrives a journalist who gets his hand on the much guarded secret about Shamitabh's truth.

Does the journalist become successful in exposing the truth behind the real 'Shamitabh', who amongst the two (Daanish and Amitabh) agree to compromise with the other, where does the duo's ego clashes leave Akshara who is working really hard on her directorial debut with Shamitabh as the lead, does the world ever get to know the decoding of Shamitabh... is what forms the rest of the film.

R. Balki, who had earlier directed the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in two of the path breaking films viz., CHEENI KUM and PAA, has really tried his best to continue this 'tradition' with SHAMITABH as well. Even though Balki has tried his level best to define every moment of the film, the viewers may find something amiss (esp. in the second half). The characters in the film are very relatable and very real, however, the film's weak storyline falters the film. While he establishes all the characters reasonably well in the first half, the dragging second half seems to take the steam off. The ego battle between the characters shall appeal to niche audiences, if not the masses.

As far as the performances are concerned, there are absolutely no points in guessing as to who is the captain of this ship... it's the actor par excellence Amitabh Bachchan, who delivers yet another performance of his lifetime with SHAMITABH. With his baritone voice and a towering persona to match, he takes his character to dizzying heights. His camaraderie with Dhanush's character in the film is really something that needs to be seen to be believed. Although he has done the drunkard acts in many films before, in SHAMITABH, he plays an old frustrated alcoholic with so much conviction. As far as Dhanush, the 'other' hero of the film, is concerned, he manages to stand his own ground despite the towering presence of Bachchan. Akshara Haasan makes an impressive debut with a stunning performance. Full credit goes to R. Balki for extracting a superlative performance out of this newcomer. Full marks to her stylist for making her look so effortlessly elegant (esp. her in a pixie cut a la international celebs like Kiera Knightley, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathway). Even though there are many known names (Mahesh Bhatt, Karan Johar, Anurag Basu, Raj Kumar Hirani, Rohit Shetty, Ekta Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Boney Kapoor, Gauri Shinde and even Abhishek Bachchan) who do a cameo in the film, it is Rekha's cameo that will get huge applause in the cinema halls. It is to be seen to believe.

The music (Ilayaraja, it's also his 1000th film as a composer) of the film oscillates between being average and above average. Lyricist Swanand Kirkire's simple and situational lyrics more or less complement Ilaiyaraja's music and the film's script. The film just would not have been what it is, had it not been for cinematography by P.C. Sreeram. The editing (Hemanti Sarkar) is average.

On the whole, SHAMITABH has an out-of-the-box and unusual plot that will appeal only to a niche audience. Go for it only if you are a hardcore Bachchan fan.

Firstpost...

Dhanush, Amitabh Bachchan's film is intelligent, but lacks a heart

Somewhere near the middle of R Balki's new film, the hero Shamitabh (Dhanush) attends a film awards ceremony. When he wins Best Actor, he goes on stage and the award is presented to him by Rekha, playing herself. The applause is rousing, Shamitabh is clearly overwhelmed. He takes the microphone and after a beat of silence says, "Thank you" in that rich, distinctive baritone that is unmistakably Amitabh Bachchan's.

Rekha catches her breath, her red lips part, her eyes widen and she stares at the man before her as though seeing him for the first time. She leans over to him and says throatily, "I'm so proud of you. ... You are truly God's gift," she pauses, "to cinema." Clearly, we can add Rekha's name to the list of Bollywood actors who can make fun of themselves and their past. The moment she hears Shamitabh speak, adoration fills her face and you can easily imagine that her pulse is beating faster, that her heart is pitter-pattering and she's replaying "Neela Aasman So Gaya" in her head.

This scene with Rekha is one of many little Bollywood tributes that fill Shamitabh, R Balki's new film about those who work backstage and help turn an actor into a star. The film begins with a premiere and the last shot before end credits is of a movie script " Shamitabh is all what makes Bollywood so charming. Here, dreams " punctured as they may be by ego, bitterness and insecurity " do come true, even if it is fleetingly.

Dhanush plays Daanish, a young man who is born mute but is obsessed with cinema and determined to be a star. Everything he learns in life is from the films he watches, picking up tips on how to woo a woman from Cary Grant and telling his school teacher that Mahatma Gandhi's wife was Rohini Hattangadi. Like Rajinikanth (Dhanush's real-life father-in-law), Daanish works briefly as a bus conductor before heading to Mumbai, with hopes of acting in a film by either Raju Hirani, Rohit Shetty or Karan Johar.

Shamitabh. Image courtesy Facebook.Of course, that doesn't happen. As if it wasn't bad enough that he's a nobody, Daanish is, after all, not just metaphorically voiceless, but literally so. A young assistant director, Akshara (Akshara Haasan) takes pity on him and then realises he's a powerful actor. But what good is an actor if he can't speak?

Enter Amitabh Sinha (Bachchan), a grizzly alcoholic who lives in a cemetery, likes to be called "Jahapanah" and has a baritone that sounds like thunder, velvet, dark chocolate and single malt whisky are having a non-stop (and occasionally violent) orgy. Decades ago, he came to Mumbai with dreams of becoming a star, but was rejected by films as well as radio, as Bachchan had been in reality. However, while Amitabh Bachchan went on to climb the heights of stardom, Amitabh Sinha plunged the depths of alcoholism. When Akshara and Daanish come to him, asking him to give the mute actor his voice, it's a chance to bring his old dreams to life.

The relationship between Daanish and Amitabh is fascinating and volatile. This is no candy-flavoured friendship in which one is happy to be in the background. Amitabh is convinced that his voice is what makes Shamitabh a superstar and Daanish is determined to prove that without his physical charisma, the voice would be irrelevant. Mediating between them is Akshara, a kind, ambitious and no-nonsense assistant director who hopes to cast Shamitabh in her first film.

The performances in Shamitabh are all powerful. It's young Haasan's debut film but she holds her own against two superstar actors. Dhanush doesn't have a single word to say in the film, but that doesn't stop him from communicating everything from Daanish's frustration with his disability to his shy crushing on Akshara. The film-within-a-film scenes show nothing of Daanish's acting talent " which is why you find yourself siding with Amitabh who credits Shamitabh's charism to his voice " but Dhanush as the silent Daanish shows how much an actor can communicate without words. Bachchan's voice resounds gloriously in Shamitabh, whether he's drunkenly talking to a tree or reciting dialogues from Mughal-e-Azam. It's been a while since Bachchan was in a film that utilises both the actor's flair for drama as well his comic timing, and Bachchan in Shamitabh shows he can still make the crowd break out in appreciative whistles and applause.

The weakest link in Shamitabh is the brief interlude of science fiction, in which transmitters and speakers are surgically inserted into Daanish. Now, anyone in possession of the headset that matches with those transmitters and speaker, can be Daanish's voice. They speak, the transmitter in his throat picks it up, sends the signal to a speaker (also in his throat) and after a short time lag, Daanish is "speaking", much like a ventriloquist's dummy. Bollywood has come up with a lot of outlandish "logic" in its time, but even by the standards of an industry that would have us believe snakes lap up breast milk and a knock on the head can cause/cure everything from amnesia to blindness, the "science" behind Shamitabh is a whole new level of bunkum.

Balki's hope as a writer and director is that the central idea of two egos wrestling for the upper hand within one persona will make us ignore the unconvincing technology behind Shamitabh, a composite of Amitabh's voice and Daanish's body. To some extent, Balki is successful.

Shamitabh is a funny, clever film that is entirely aware of how funny and clever it is, and how that makes it better than most dreary Bollywood releases. Fittingly for a director with roots in advertising, the product placement in Shamitabh is some of the best seen so far. It ranges from cheeky " a film called Lifebuoy in which the hero, named after the soap, is committed to protect the country's tandurusti " to subtle, like the plugs for Amazon that are scattered all over the film. Balki also comes up with some little details, like Daanish's "five star accomodation" when he first comes to Mumbai, which are delightful.

And yet, for all the intelligence that characterises Shamitabh, what the film lacks is heart. Perhaps it's the effort of balancing the gentle parody of Bollywood with the sensitive drama of Daanish and Amitabh's struggle for power, but Shamitabh isn't as moving as you'd expect a Balki film to be. We spend two and a half hours with Daanish and Amitabh, but when we come out of the theatre, it doesn't feel like we know them. All Daanish is his disability while Amitabh is his whisky-laced ego. Much like Balki's previous films, Cheeni Kum and Paa, Shamitabh has a wonderful premise and a good buildup, but flounders as it nears the climax. The end is drearily predictable, particularly since it seems Balki has a pattern for how his films must end.
Still, despite the flawed writing, Dhanush and Bachchan make Shamitabh a pleasant enough outing to the movies.
