Dolly Ki Doli has taken disastrous opening in morning shows as most places are running empty house.. Movie has opened to mere 5-7% which is one of worst ever start in recent years for movie releasing in over 1000 screens..

Movie is only running over 10% in East Punjab else where it's below 10%.. Movie is all dependant on the growth but with Baby already there it's growth will be limited..

Opening is much lower from Khoobsurat which had similar release scenario last year as Khoobsurat had opened to around 15%..

But still, opening day will be more since theaters are double in number than Khoobsurat plus 100 min movie and I just checked, its having 7 shows everywhere in my state. So collection should be atleast 6 crore(keeping in mind that its not a superstar's film and Sonam has weak BO pull)

if it cover 10 to20 percentage in first day then forget about number of screens.

Lets accept bets that it will not recover its cost 25 crore. 1:2 ek ka doh😆

Dolly ki Doli review: Sonam's best movie so far, and totally forgettable fluff

Some will call Dolly ki Doli the best Sonam Kapoor movie till date, but what those people are saying is that Dolly ki Doli is better than I Hate Luv Stories, Mausam, Players and Bewakoofiyan. That doesn't add up to much of a compliment, even if Kapoor is such a beautiful person.

In Abhishek Dogra's debut film Dolly (Kapoor) is part of a con gang that finds suitably stupid eligible bachelors, gets them married to Dolly, who mixes sleep medicine in the suhaag raat doodh and makes off after robbing them dry. One of her gang members (Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub), who generally plays the brother, is miffed because he digs her. One of her victims (Rajkummar Rao) is miffed because he still wants her. One of the police officers on the case (Pulkit Samrat) is miffed because he wants revenge against her.

Courtesy: Facebook

If this all sounds a bit vague and meandering, that's because Dolly Ki Doli is precisely that. Only, all around this meandering narrative are interesting details. Rao plays a hardcore jat, softened into a weepie after nursing his broken heart. He is such a natural that he can make you like anything he appears in, even if the material is way below his talent level. One victim's mother is Archana Puran Singh, who brings the house down as the hilariously witchy, crass and self centered Punjaban mother. Also bringing on the guffaws is Varun Sharma as the quintessential Delhi buffoon, desperate to please a pretty girl. The funniest moment in the film is when he's getting beaten with a shoe by a fellow Dolly victim.

Plus there's the always likable Manoj Joshi, Rajesh Sharma and Brijendra Kala in tiny supporting roles, lending their bits of assured niceness to Dolly ki Doli.

All these disparate goodies eventually crumble because of the weak spot at the heart of the story: the central character of Dolly, who is not only terribly written but also severely underperformed by Sonam Kapoor. Whether Dolly is happy, or sad, or scared, or upset, or frustrated, or angry, or tipsy, there is literally no change in Sonam's personality. It's only the volume of her voice that changes. Her presence is simply too insubstantial to carry the weight of an entire film.

It doesn't help that her character has no backstory whatsoever - we never get to know why she's into the con game, where she's originally from or why she has no interest in a real relationship. One presumes that such things have to be excised to keep the runtime short, but it takes away a large slice of the film's quality. Moreover, when the best thing you can say about a movie is that its runtime is just 110 minutes, you're not exactly talking about a great piece of filmmaking.

There are also a ton of truly astronomical plot holes in the movie. Dolly's gang manages to dupe more than a dozen grooms and their respective families in the film, yet there is not a single picture of the gang in the wedding photos to show to the police. The film often tries to make us forget such logical leaps of faith by asking us to simply go with the flow of the series of the small, light hearted comedic moments. But then it also renders three completely out of place songs, one truly nonsensical celebrity cameo, and a couple of ham handed attempts at emancipation'. Key characters bicker, and then suddenly forgive each other. The cons are so contrived and the ending so predictable, you'll wonder why the characters didn't go ahead with their actions an hour earlier. Come to think to it, none of it makes any sense whatsoever. Including the thakela nature of Malaika Arora's item number.

Though Dolly Ki Doli doesn't qualify as an awful movie - it's not tacky and is often funny - it does, regrettably, end up as forgettable fluff and a hugely wasted opportunity.

Dolly ki Doli review: The film's fun but Sonam Kapoor is plastic as usual

Rajkummar Rao is a serious actor. Since his debut in Dibakar Banerjee's Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010), Rao has shown he can pull our heartstrings, be the boy next door and convince us he's everything from callous to charming, depending on what the script and the director demand from the actor. It turns out that this is not the extent of his talents. Rao can also match Malaika Arora Khan jhatka for jhatka. In fact, he's a better dancer than Sonam Kapoor. When he leaps into the choreography of "Fashion Khatam Mujhpe" in Dolly ki Doli, you might just find yourself ignoring Khan and being riveted by how Rao busts the item-number moves.

That song isn't the only instance when Rao steals the show in Abhishek Dogra's Dolly ki Doli. As Sonu Sherawat, a sugarcane farmer from Sonepat whose heart is broken by his runaway con-artist bride, Rao is both hilarious and lovable. He's got the Haryanvi accent down pat as well as the swagger. Although he's just one of three men that Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) has dancing to her tunes, Rao's Sonu is the one who stands out.

The film begins with Sonu and Dolly's love story. She bats her eyelashes, he shows up at her house to ask for her hand in marriage and after a few googlies, Dolly weds Sonu. By the time Sonu wakes up on his first day as a married man, Dolly has cleaned out his family home of all their valuables and vanished. Little does Sonu know that he's joined a long list of men who have fallen prey to the woman whose exploits are recorded in a police file labelled "lootera dulhan" [the bandit bride].

A still from Dolly ki Doli promos. Facebook.

True to the spirit of Bollywood, Dolly ki Doli doesn't make much logical sense, but it's a fun plot. A young woman and her family of choice traipse around north India, gleefully fleecing nitwits. Her entourage includes a pandit, who helpfully picks convenient wedding dates, and a photographer who makes sure Dolly is not in any wedding photos. There's also a fake mother, father, brother and a grandmother who is the the desi version of Groot. What is true about this collection of criminal oddballs is that they're a team and they love each other.

This gang's con is simple: scope out new targets, take on different identities and run off with everything in the groom's home on the wedding night. This means cash, jewellery, the gold chain on a father in-law's neck and one mother in-law's underwear collection. As Bollywood heroines go, Dolly is a refreshing contrast to the paragons of virtue that we usually see. She loves conning people and takes great pride in these unsavoury skills. Never mind minor details like marriages involving legal documents and leaving a paper trail, the impossibility of no one having taken a photograph of Dolly, and the sheer ridiculousness of everyone cheerfully glugging drugged milk just because it's being served to them by a beaming Sonam Kapoor. How is not a single person lactose intolerant? Is north India as the setting justification enough for everyone, without exception, liking milk?

Largely because of the supporting cast that has actors like Rao, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, Rajesh Sharma, Archana Puran Singh and Varun Sharma, Dolly ki Doli is enjoyable enough in parts. Unfortunately, it has two critical flaws. One is the script. Much like Bobby Jasoos, which had great characters and not much else, Dolly ki Doli's plot is barely there even though the scenes are filled with delightful elements. Weakening the plot further is the way the script rushes through important details, like Dolly's first love story and the film's end. Still, there are some lovely dialogues and in the hands of good actors, the script's flaws could have been camouflaged. Unfortunately, the bulk of Dolly ki Doli depends on Kapoor and Pulkit Samrat. That Dogra thought he could convince audiences these two can act is the most audacious con and one that is resoundingly unsuccessful.

Yet again, Kapoor has chosen a delightful, spirited character for herself. However, when she has to do things like say dialogue and arrange her beautiful face into expressions, the effect is about as natural as a plastic cuckoo in a cuckoo clock. This is a shame because Kapoor looks gorgeous in the film and it's easy to believe anyone would fall for that dazzling smile, so on paper, she's well-cast as Dolly. Fortunately for Kapoor, there's someone worse than her in the acting department: Pulkit Samrat, who plays Inspector Robin Singh, the Dabanng-inspired cop chasing Dolly. Samrat's face is pretty enough, but has no expression and he does a godawful Haryanvi accent that's all the more jarring because Rao's is pitch perfect. Finally, there's more chemistry in a sterilised glass of still water than between Dolly and Robin Singh, which is why the end " hasty and half-baked as it may be " is such a relief.

In an ideal world, Ayub, who plays Dolly's fake brother Raju, and Rao would have the key roles in this film. Had Dolly ki Doli cast Rao as Robin and paid attention to Ayub's character instead of abandoning Raju's story along the way, Dogra's film could have been great fun. Unfortunately, since neither actor has movie star looks, they have to be relegated to supporting cast. Considering that Dolly ki Doli is a film about how there's more to life than keeping up appearances, this is particularly ironic. Left to the pretty faces, a film that could have been a charming caper ends up to be a simple disappointment.

four day weekend me 20 crore toh kar lena chahiye, then it'll recover its cost.1700 theatres and 7 damn shows..isme 6 crore se neeche opening day pe toh laanat hai Sonam ko.
I mean Finding Fanny made 5 crore on first day, with halfthe number of screens(on 900 screens) and half no. of shows shown.Atleast Sonam ki starpower 6 crore toh honi chahiye. Then it'll be half of Deepika's starpower

'Dolly ki Doli' - Movie review

By Shubha Shetty-Saha |Posted 23-Jan-2015

'Dolly' is a strange mish mash of a conwoman and Sati Savitri and so is 'Dolly Ki Doli', which starts out with a lot of promise, but ultimately isn't convincing enough

'Dolly ki Doli'
U/A; Comedy
Director: Abhishek Dogra
Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Pulkit Samrat, Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma
Stars:

'Dolly Ki Doli', a comedy about a runaway girl who marries men only to loot them soon after, shows a lot of promise at the outset.

Photos: Anushka Sharma, Rani Mukerji, Karisma Kapoor at 'Dolly Ki Doli' screening

The street smart Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) has a fake family with father (Manoj Joshi), brother, mother and a grandmother. The team goes about conning gullible men into marrying Dolly and vamoos with the valuables on the first night. A cop (Pulkit Samrat) decides to take up the case, chase and capture Dolly.

The first half of the film is fun, thanks to a bunch of competent actors and some laugh-out-loud scenes. Rajkummar Rao, who plays a lovestruck Haryanvi, yet again shows his competence as an actor even though in an unfamiliar set up and also surprises with a typical Bollywood style dance number. Varun Sharma as the daft, mamma's boy and Archana Pooran Singh, who plays his mother, are simply hilarious. Sonam Kapoor looks gorgeous enough to make us believe that any man could want her to be his wife, but her acting skills still need a bit of brushing up. Pulkit needs to get out of his Salman Khan fixation for us to be able to see his real talent.

The second half of the film starts dipping drastically and the climax is disappointing.

Sadly, in this 'pure woman' obsessed industry, even a conwoman is presented in the 'touch me not' garb. By the writer's and director's logic, Dolly can break hearts, break trust of the men who fell in love with her and chose to marry her, but please ignore all that because she is a good woman. It's just that she has had a failed relationship in the past and please adore her because she doesn't allow anyone to touch or kiss her! If a heartbreak in the past (every woman goes through that in one form or the other) justifies the protagonist turning a criminal, okay then.

This premise could have worked wonders, if the director confidently showed the protagonist as the stone hearted, badass woman who cheated men for the pure thrill of it. That Dolly would have been far more convincing than this strange mish mash of a conwoman and Sati Savitri.

Movie Review: Dolly ki Doli

(Any opinions expressed here are those of the author and not of Thomson Reuters)

The best thing about Abhishek Dogra's new film "Dolly ki Doli" is that it is all of 100 minutes long. Whatever flaws the script might have, whatever acting that goes haywire, goes by in such a flash that you don't have time to dwell on it.

Sonam Kapoor plays Dolly, a sweet-faced con who is a serial runaway bride. She charms men, convinces them to marry her and then splits, looting them of everything before she goes.

Her gang is an assorted crew of other cons, all of whom play her family during the myriad weddings in which she participates. (A doli is the palanquin that the bride sits in as she is brought in to her wedding ceremony).

When Robin Singh, a police officer with a connection to Dolly's past, gets her case, her days are numbered, but that doesn't deter her or her gang.

Dogra starts off well, and gets the small touches right. The Haryanvi accent, the Punjabi profanity, the dominating mother, the cowering son, all are sketched out perfectly. There are laughs to be had, especially in the form of Archana Puran Singh as the loud, snooty Punjabi mother, who turns her nose up at everything and is immediately " and rightly " suspicious of Dolly and her charms.

But as Dolly, the film's protagonist, Sonam Kapoor doesn't quite pull it off. She is too perfectly turned out to be convincing as a rough-and-tough con-woman who doesn't trust anyone but herself. The attempt at playing Robin Hood (demonstrated by a fleeting shot in which she feeds hungry kids at a fast food restaurant) is hurried, and the justification of her actions is unconvincing.

Nevertheless, "Dolly Ki Doli" is a breezy watch, one that is salvaged largely because it knows how to deliver smart lines and, most importantly, knows when to end.

Review: Dolly Ki Doli is worth a ride!

January 23, 2015 09:51 IST

Sonam Kapoor in Dolly Ki DoliDolly Ki Doli's ambiguous, unapologetic tone favours the overall whimsy narrative and its aversion to melodrama, says Sukanya Verma.

I can name a hundred movies where the end shot is that of the hero and heroine tying the knot. Marriage is a national obsession, an adopted pastime and so deeply entrenched in our collective consciousness that any refusal to get on the I do' bandwagon is almost viewed as rebellion or, even worse, a mistake.

First timer Abhishek Dogra's droll Dolly Ki Doli isn't an anti-marriage propaganda but deviously defiant towards the institution while both -- mocking and exploiting -- the pomp and pomposity that leads up to sealing the deal.

Personifying this sass is serial con bride Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) while Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma chip in as her silly, significant bakras. There's also a pretty Pulkit Samrat, playing an achingly stiff, un-Chulbul clone of Salman Khan's cop in Dabangg.

Although the film's premise is uncannily similar to Punjabi rom-com RSVP-Ronde Saare Vyaah Pichon (high on the hilarious banter of comedian Jaswinder Bhalla) Dolly Ki Doli subsequently moves out in an entirely unique direction.

With its winsome ensemble of actors, background actors and walk-in parts, the lighthearted caper radiates an attractive energy that's pleasant to be around even if hardly profound. Moreover, Dolly Ki Doli goofs on the coy dulhan stereotype with such wicked relish it never gets dull.

Save for Samrat, much of the casting hits a home run. The incredible Rajkummar perfectly brings out the tragicomic impulses of a duped romantic, Varun Sharma's believability as a puerile, Punjabi, momma's boy is both a masterstroke and matter of concern.

As for the lady in the Doli itself, Sonam's Dolly is playacting to entice suitors for most part and her obvious, overstated airhead (sporting a wardrobe that's a gorgeous mini movie on its own) is sly enough to be in on the joke and be a sport about it. All she needs now is to get rid of her spoilt princess speech, work on her dialogue delivery, modulate it and her performances will come out looking much more effective.

Somewhere in its breezy 100 minutes duration, the film cooks up a fuzzy origins story about its looteri dulhan' and none whatsoever of its gang members. Strangely, the ambiguous, unapologetic tone favours the overall whimsy narrative and its aversion to melodrama.

Even if the concluding bit of the script could do with a couple more rewrites, I am glad Dogra doesn't cop out to accommodate an overnight change of personality.

And that alone make Dolly Ki Doli worth a ride in my book.
