One of the biggest releases of the year ''Happy New Year'' released today on one of the biggest holiday of the year which is post Diwali. Film has huge pre release buzz and it is expected to shatter few records in first three day itself. Though like all big releases in recent times film has mixed reviews from few ''usual suspected'' sources but that does not matter as box office hurricane has arrived truly in style.

Happy New Year starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan and other releases today, 24th Oct. Here is the spoiler free movie review of the film.
Plot-
Happy New Year, an usual revenge saga revolves around how Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan) decides to take a revenge from (Jackie Shroff) for his father's (Anupam Kher) death by stealing diamonds from him. Charlie decides to form a team of 5 people who are losers but excel in one important quality required for stealing. To make the theft successful, Charlie and his team have to participate in W.D.C i.e. World Dance Championship. All the 5 members are terrible dancers and hence they decide to rope in Mohini (Deepika Padukone), a bar dancer to train them in dancing. Once the team reaches Dubai, the real drama starts. Will the team succeed to participate in the dance competition? Will they be able to steal the diamonds? Find out the answer in a theater near you
Direction-
Happy New Year marks the return of Farah Khan after not so successful Tees Maar Khan. Her direction is a mixed bag of emotions. Some scenes are very good while some fall flat. Since she was teaming with SRK, more was expected from her side. However full marks to her for the presentation of the film
Music
Vishal Shekhar disappoint big time. Dance based films should have good music and Happy New Year lacks in this dept. The music is no where close to Om Shanti Om. There are some hummable ones though like Manwaa Laage and Indiawaale but much was expected from them.
Technical Aspects-
One of the biggest problem with Happy New Year is the length of the film which is almost 3 hour long. The movie could easily have been shorter by at least 20 mins and a lot of unnecessary forced humor in the first half and a few sequences in the second half could have been easily avoided. The dance rehearsal scenes could have been trimmed and heist/thrill part should have increased. The cinematography by Manush Nandan is top notch and the locales are one of the best seen ever in Bollywood. The action in the film is limited but is used smartly in the film, the standout scenes being SRK's entry scene and the pre climax heist. Background music is good The dialogues are good but could have been much better. Many cult dialogues of Shah Rukh Khan are used in the film time and again which gets repetitive at times
Performances-
Happy New Year rides on the star power of Shah Rukh Khan. The actor brings a lot of energy to the character of Charlie and is a complete charmer on screen right from scene one. The actor excels in all aspects be it action, romance or comedy. If you loved Shah Rukh in Chennai Express, this is a notch higher than his last film. Deepika padukone as Mohini is very effective as always. She sizzles the screen with her dance moves and gets well into the character of a bar dancer and plays a sheet anchor to the entire group. The surprise package of the film is definitely Abhishek Bachchan who manages to evoke few of the funniest moments in the film. The actor seems to be enjoying himself while playing the role of Nandu Bheede. There is another "special" thing about Abhisheks character and he manages to do that in style. Boman Irani, Vivaan, Sonu Sood are decent but their parts could have been better. Anupam Kher and Jackie Shroff are reliable as always.
Verdict-
Overall, despite a few loopholes Happy New Year delivers what it promised to i.e loads of entertainment. The film rides high on the star power and histrionics of Shah Rukh Khan and in a way celebrates Shah Rukh Khan. The film has ample humor, thrill and drama to keep the audiences engaged. Go celebrate your Diwali with Indiawaale at theaters near you.

That was the first review I read of his, where he praised Deepika...after that, he seems to have been completely smitten by her!😆Am going to watch it during the weekend, if I manage to get the tickets! Some of my friends saw the FDFS and they were all saying the same thing, much better than what was expected!I am beginning to think that the bad promo's and trailers were intentional afterall...they kept expectations for the film very low and now everyone is liking what they are getting.@Shreya, the panauti on HNY is off. Mihir and Raja Sen have given the film thumbs down. Only Masand is left. If he too gives below 3 stars, then HNY is a sure short BB!😆

Happy New Year is watchable in parts but its three hours and plus running time makes it woefully difficult, says Sukanya Verma.
If absurdity is the definition of humour, I'd rather see pigs fly.
Instead, I am watching Happy New Year, Shah Rukh Khan's big-budget Diwali release this year. Here, a group of six Indians aspire to win an international dance competition as well as steal prized diamonds from a high-security vault in Dubai. Of course, five out of this aforementioned lot are non-dancers and part of the meticulous master plan is to strip and stand on a pile of cast clothing if one cannot reach the height of a vault wall screw.
One (Shah Rukh Khan) is a graduate from, no kidding, Boston University and (I don't know) a victim of recession?
Two (Sonu Sood) is an ex-army man and hard of hearing, a complaint that miraculously vanishes in the second half of the film.
Three (Boman Irani) is a Parsi bachelor still living with his nagging mom (Daisy Irani) and suffers from 30-second fits every now and then.
Four (Vivaan Shah) is a computer geek who can hackofy' anything.
Five (Abhishek Bachchan) is a street-smart lout and drunkard with a superhuman capacity to vomit, in slo-mo, no less.
Six (Deepika Padukone) is a sizzling cabaret dancer who cannot speak English eajeeeily' but fancies anyone who does.
Despite the silliness of its premise and convenient absence of CCTVs in an upscale hotel's elevator, there is a potentially fun story somewhere in this clutter, which is completely lost to accommodate choreographer-turned-filmmaker Farah Khan's love for excesses.
Revenge, dance-offs, patriotism, romance, Parsi humour, tapori gags, gay jokes (Anurag Kashyap and Vishal Dadlani like never before), bar dancer with girl-next-door values, high-concept heist, triumph of underdogs, product placements and countless Bollywood references -- Happy New Year thoughtlessly packs in everything in sight but fails to substantiate it with the zest or repartee that made the over-the-top buffoonery of Main Hoon Naa or Om Shanti Om amusing.
Crowds hurling rotten fruits on characters, the ancient face-smashed-in-cake joke, grownup guys stumbling all over in tutu skirts or a trivial dig on a Saroj Khan clone, the slapstick horseplay here is akin to a parent making a fool of oneself to pacify or distract his/her kid. Yet the liberal use of double-entendres isn't exactly child-friendly.
Low on wit, quirk and imagination, Happy New Year wears stupidity like a medal -- embarrassingly content with its self-congratulatory tone that references Farah's own films as well as Dharmendra's sleek diamond quest in Shalimar, Rajesh Khanna's Kutti cheez catchphrase (Raja Rani), Amitabh Bachchan's chor baap' woes from Deewar, Don's invincible mushkil hi nahi namumkin' charisma, Shah Rukh Khan's Sattar Minute' speech in Chak De! India, Madhuri Dixit's iconic Mohini from Tezaab and brother Sajid Khan's "Ha Ha Hee Hee" brand of cinema in a manner so tedious, it's a waste.
For a script that gives solid importance to spectacle and boasts of a director who's among India's prominent choreographers, the showmanship leaves a lot to be desired. Vishal-Shekhar's soundtrack does not hit a single winning note and the choreography is shockingly lacklustre. Just putting up a garish visual palette, which throws every variety of gold and tinsel on screen doesn't translate to opulence. Even Dubai's majestic Atlantis, where Happy New Year is predominantly filmed, is barely exploited to its full potential.
Happy New Year is watchable in parts but its three hours and plus running time makes it woefully difficult. I looked at my watch and about 70 minutes are purely spent in introducing its six main protagonists.
On their part, the actors do their best to make up for this scarcity of technical finesse and zany sense of humour with their affectionate chemistry. As the leader of the pack, SRK looks completely home. His wardrobe may resemble a disco ball (when he's not flaunting that sickeningly sculpted torso) but the actor is unusually restrained for a Farah Khan sensibility.
A suave Jackie Shroff, as his nemesis, exudes quiet menace but Happy New Year doesn't seem to care. Too little of him, too inconsequential.
Deepika Padukone is better styled than the movie and makes most of her presence. Though I have gotten too used to seeing her in better stuff.
If Boman Irani is repetitive, Sonu Sood is overtly excitable and both get on the nerves. Vivaan Shah keeps it normal but doesn't have much to do.
It's Abhishek Bachchan, free from the expectations of hero or sidekick, who has the most fun with Happy New Year. He's least conscious and goes all out injecting some droll action in an increasingly drab movie.
