@Antlers,
I am just mentioning how it works in most Indian schools and Universities.
When they ask for first language, you mention the language of your ethinicity.
Then there is another section called, Preferred language, where you can put any language that you are comfortable in.
First language, at least, in India and most parts of Asia refers to Mother Toungue.
For eg, In Hongkong, no matter how fluent an Indian might be in English, they would still be categorized as Non-native English speakers with whatever ethincity they might belong to being their first language.
Then there are many British born and raised Chinese who come back to HK later on, but are still categorized as Non-native English speakers with their first language being Chinese, even though most of them cannot speak one word in Chinese.

There s nothing wrong that an Indian's first language is English. It is the case with many Indians for various reasons.

My first language was my mother tongue and English. And this was while in India, which I left by the age of 10. I was fluent in different ways with both languages. I was more comfortable with one for certain things, and with the other for other things.

Plenty of Indians would consider English their first language more than their mother tongue, and there's nothing wrong with it. And then there are Indians who also would consider English their mother tongue.

India is a multilingual country.🥱 It is not the only colonized country which speaks the colonizer's language. It doesn't seem that odd when it comes to some countries, but when it's India suddenly all the pitchforks and judging happens.🥱

pronunciation and diction.

English speak English. They have an English accent.

American speak English. Well, we Americans have a very crass accent according to a lot of other people.

At your quotation of my comment: if someone is going to be pretentious and claim rights on a language she has very little hold of, damn straight I or anyone else has every right to criticize that person. You claim to own something, then own it in every way or shut up. Sonam is just a fruit cake. I doubt she even reads anything other than fashion magazines. Again, nothing wrong with that but there's no use passing yourself as an intellectual when you're clearly not. Anyway, I digress.

Also, she didn't say she spoke the language. She said English is her first language. Big difference. Ergo, my comment is perfectly acceptable.

While that is fine in its place, in Sonams case, her first language is NOT English as she is claiming. She knows how to speak in Hindi perfectly fine. English isn't her first language. She was raised in an Indian family, in India, studied there, and works in the Bollywood industry. That's ridiculous.

Does she read and write as proficiently in Hindi?

An offensive patriarchal system which needs to end. What when parents have different languages? Why pick one?

On a more serious note, why did they edit out her part of the ad?

Usually, unnecessary elements get chopped off at the editing table. 😆

RTH,
This is not the worst of it.
In Indonesia, Indians are not allowed to teach English in schools and Universities (despite having proper professional qualifications and complete fluency in the language) because English is not their 'first language'😕
Only Britishers, Americans and Australians are allowed to teach English in schools ect, because it is their 'first language'. And I have personally seen that a lot of Indians have a far, far better grip on the English language than these so-called native speakers.

So suppose you went to apply to a school and you put your first language as Spanish because who were born into a family of hispanic... you'd put your first language as Spanish even though you don't know a word of it. LOL. what in the world. Next time, ill just say my first language is Rajasthani because my parents are Rajasthani. Even though I don't speak a word of it. 😆

If you are planning to apply to a place like Delhi or Mumbai University, you might as well say that your first language is Rajasthani, when they ask for it. Because that is what they would be expecting you to write in their forms, irrespective of whether you can speak in it or not.
