If I have to converse with a person of Bengali or Telugu or Tamil descent I would opt for English cos not everyone knows Hindi. In my close friends group, one was Marwari, one from Patna and one Kannadiga so obv we spoke in English but with the Kannadiga friend I spoke in Kannada. With family ofcourse its native language but how much time do we really spend with family these days. Its usually spent at college or work.

Why is it expected of all Indians to talk in Hindi? We have our regional languages. Katrina is sometimes expected to talk in Hindi cos she has been doing Hindi movies for so long. No one expects her to speak in Telugu cos she did one movie in Telugu. When she is asked a question in Hindi, the least she can do is reply back in Hindi. And not call dal , yellow sauce and so on.

Where did I say that?? I used the phrase NATIVE LANGUAGE and not Hindi...

As far as Kat is concerned...no she is fine replying in English even if she is asked a question in Hindi...because she is comfortable in English...Why should we have two different standards for Kat and Indians...if its OK for people to speak whatever language they are comfortable in...same should be OK for Kat too...She shouldn't be mocked as long as her dialogues are not dubbed by anyone in the movies.

I don't think there is anything wrong or dumb in saying English is her first language.

I was born and brought up in India. I speak three Indian languages fluently - Konkani, Hindi, Marathi. I understand Gujarati, but have to reply in Hindi.

Yet if someone asks me what is my first language, I would say English. It is not because I am ashamed of any of the other languages. It is simply because it is a fact. I was raised with English. My parents formally taught me ABCs. My children's books were all English. I can not only speak English fluently, but I can read and write English with ease.

On the other hand I didn't start learning my K, Kh, Gs till third or fourth standard when they start teaching it in school. My spelling and grammar was always atrocious. I barely passed those subjects and even flunked Hindi once. I struggle to read a children's Chandamama in Hindi or Marathi. To write in Hindi or Marathi is an even bigger ordeal.

I cannot claim any of my Indian languages to be my first language because neither are they my first nor are they my strongest. You say English is a second language usually if English is not your preferred mode of communication. There are a gazillion dumb thing Sonam says, this is nowhere close to being dumb at all. If it is, then I guess I received a newsflash today - I'm dumb for saying English is my first language. I'd guess almost all my peers who received the typical Bombay Catholic school upbringing will fall in the dumb category.

The fact that she speaks English with a heavy hindi accent, makes it hard for people to believe that, I guess...😆
& Nah, why are you ruining the fun?? Finally another SoDumb statement after so long & here you are with logic!😡😆

You didn't directly say Hindi but since I know your Native language is Hindi, you might speak that to everyone and as a whole everyone somewhat understands Hindi so they might reply to you in some form or another. Now if I go and speak my native language with some stranger , they might just make a face as they won't understand anything. So its kind of implied cos for North Indians it feels like everyone knows Hindi ( and also wrongly considered as National language) and when you asked why speak in English, the only other common language that comes to mind is Hindi. But then in South India Hindi isn't spoken that often. There are so many state languages, how can one expect to speak in native language with everyone?

Its not even a different standard for Kat and Indians. No one is asking Katrina to speak in shudh Hindi all the time. N its not being comfortable with language but just the necessity of being able to communicate with 10 ppl of different ethnicity. Its just weird for me when someone is talking with me in Hindi and I keep answering in English. I just usually try to reply in the same language, however bad I might sound. Or else directly tell that person to speak in English. Anyways I have never had problem with Katrina and her Hindi but more so with the lack of her acting capabilities.

Kind of IMPLIED??/ i mean seriously??? Do u think I would have used the term NATIVE LANGUAGE if I wanted to imply that everyone should speak Hindi???I mean kuchh bhi...atleast if u have to accuse me...accuse me for something I have done...Just show me one post in this whole thread where I have said that Everyone in India is supposed to speak in Hindi...and I don't give a damn if other North Indians do it...I did not is what matters to me...and if u want to generalize then you should not have quoted my post...and making it feel like I want every one to speak in Hindi...

Lol calm down. I am not accusing you of anything. It just make sense that you are surprised that ppl don't talk that much of their native language cos yours is Hindi(AFAIK) and most of us can understand it. I added that to my previous post.

Also it was second para of my post and I was generally speaking what I felt. Not exactly addressed or like you think "accusing" you.😆 Katrina part was from your post to Feiry.

What is wrong with u?? You are blaming me based on the image u have of North Indians and what they do and not do?? My post and my views do not matter to you?? Why don't u go and read again what I wrote?? I never said why people speak in English... I said that based on this thread I made an OBSERVATION that people tend to speak English more than their native language ...IT was a statement and not a question...

Please for generally speaking make a separate post...because if u make that comment using my post ...I will think its for me...
and I still don't get why u are so upset with that observation I made...Did I disrespect any language there?? Hindi is also a native language for certain states because India doesn't have a National language.
