Plot-
Milli (Sonam Kapoor) is a sport physiotherapist working in Shah Rukh Khan's KKR IPL team who gets a call from a Royal Family of Rathores from a small town in India Sambhalgarh to cure the King of the Palace Shekhar Rathore (Aamir Raza). The family of Rathore's abides by rules and regulation made by the woman of the house Nirmala Rathore (Ratna Pathak). The living environment at the palace is completely new for Milli as she belongs to a typical full of life Punjabi Family. At the Palace, Milli meets the prince of the house Vikram Rathore (Fawad Khan) who is exactly opposite of what Milli is. As Milli begins to spend time at the palace, she begins to bring about a change in the thinking of the people and makes them realize the importance of enjoying life? Will Milli be able to change the rules and regulations of the palace?
Direction-
Khoobsurat directed by Shashanka Ghosh is the official remake of 1980's classic by the same name. Many times in the past we have seen cult classics not getting the desired treatment when they have been remade. Khoobsurat suffers from the same problem and the blame should go to the immature direction by Shashanka Ghosh. The writing as well as the treatment for many scenes goes too over the at times and the humor looks forced at many instances. However, the director does gives us some genuinely funny scenes but they are too few and far.
Music-
The lesser we talk about the music of the film, the better it is. Music of Khoobsurat by Sneha Khanwalkar is disappointing. Adding to the bad music are the weird lyrics which make the things even worse. The only ray of good hope in the album is Naina which is being composed by Armaan Malik.
Technical Aspects-
Khoobsurat is a 2 hour 10 minutes film which has been edited by Bakul Matiyani. Despite being abstained to a length little more than 2 hour, the film looks to have been little stretched. The film has been packaged very well despite being made in a limited budget. The sets and well as the locales captured are a treat to watch on the big screen. The dialogues by Juhi Chaturvedi are funny at a few instances and have been written smartly.
Performances-
Khoobsurat belongs to the official Disney girl of Bollywood Sonam Kapoor. The actress makes the character of Milli look very believable and makes it her own. She is one of the few things which make you sit throughout the film. She enlightens the screen with her presence and the charming smile. Watch out for her emotional outburst in front of Shekhar Rathore in middle of the first half. She is effortless in the scene where she expresses her feelings to Vikram in the second half. Fawad Khan makes his debut in Bollywood with Khoobsurat however the character of Vikram Rathore does not give him much scope to show his acting talent. The actor however is impressive in the climax when he has a faceoff with Kirron Kher. The actor does not emote much in the film but however that is what the character demanded. Kirron Kher as Sonam Kapoor's mother Manju is hilarious in her role of a loud Punjabi Mother. The role was tailor made for the actress and she does not disappoint with her performance in the film. Ratna Pathak as the Queen of Palace does her part well and reminds us for her role in Sarabhai V/s Sarabhai. The rest of the supporting cast is decent.
Verdict-
Overall, Khoobsurat is neither very Khoobsurat, Nor very Baadsurat. The film manages to evoke some genuinely funny moments especially in the first half but they begin to dry up as and when the film progresses. The movie starts off as a film which gives us a feeling of being the happiest film of the year, however the incidents eventually become too over the top. The performances by Sonam Kapoor, Kirron Kher and Ratna Pathak are good and manage to keep us glued onto the screen for most of the time.
Watch Khoobsurat for Sonam Kapoor, Glamour and some genuinely funny dialogues.
The much awaited Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan starrer first Disney movie Khoobsurat has finally hit the big screen. Though managed to create the buzz but we would say that the movie did not leave lasting impression on us. The fact that the plot is loosely based on Rekha's Khoobsurat did no good to the movie. Though it could not match the charm of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's classic movie, but was an average take on it. Unlike the earlier version, Khoobsurat revolves around the young couple's love story.
Khoobsurat starts on a fresh promising note, but the story go for a toss in the second half as all the characters seem to have lost idea about the plot. The movie is likable with good performances from couple of actors and some very stunning visuals. However the not so hatke script might not take the film to any positive note at the box-office.
Sonam is doing her best by with her chic looks and blatantly loud acting. She tries hard to be bubbly, clumpy and a loud Delhiite girl but fails miserably. Fawad, on the other hand looks ever so charming and impresses the audience with his subtle mannerisms, good looks and acting. In fact people will loathe Sonam even more ignoring her so called trial and error acting techniques. One thing that will irritate about Sonam apart from her poor acting skills is her obsession with clicking selfies!
One reason people will be flocking the theatre will be because of Fawad Khan. He fits perfectly in the role of a Prince who secretly falls in love with Sonam the bubbly physiotherapist. Fawad's performance as Vikramaditya Rathore is likeable. The brooding man has dreamy eyes and looks that makes girls go weak in their knees. Apart from the lead characters Ratna Pathak Shah tries her best to fill in a strict mother's role but it somehow feels similar to her Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na role. Whereas at some point we hated Kiron Kher to portray the role of Punjabi mom, this particular role worked for her. Her comical timings were very clean in the movie resulting in a few chuckle her and there.
One thing that people, especially girls will admire is the abundant efforts put towards the costume styling. Hats off to the team for experimenting and coming up with very unconventional looks for Sonam.
Undoubtedly, no one better than Sonam can pull off the uncoordinated and unconventional look. Her whole look in this movie is a clash of colours, prints and various styles put together. Although the styles come across as mismatched, yet they work beautifully on her. We sure do love the Jaipuri printed kurta along coloured chinos and comfortable sneakers. She is the only actress who can rock dhoti pants! No one can match her connotation of flamboyant manner and reckless courage when it comes to dressing sense and style statement.
The songs of the movie have so far entertained us. Despite its fallback, Khoobsurat does manage to be likable with its feel good and breezy story. Khoobsurat can be watched once for Sonam and Fawad's amazing chemistry.
