Main Tera Hero
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Nargis Fakhri, Ileana D'cruz
Director: David Dhawan
Rating:
The hero in the film was first spotted in a mobile ad promoting a tensions free, EMI free handset. He is the hero of this film. His father, David Dhawan, is the comedy king from the 90s.
Main Tera Hero is a complete entertainment film. The film has action, comedy, drama, romance, a lip lock, some glamour, a party number, a wedding number and a cute villain.
The hero may look innocent, but in his own words, is anything but. His name is Seenu, and the whole town is fed up with his antics. Our hero comes from Ooty and goes to Bengaluru to get his graduate degree. And here he falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D'cruz). But sitting with a hawk's eye on Sunaina is Angad (Arunoday Singh) who's a police officer.
Then the scene does a 350 degree flip after Ayesha (Nargis Fakri), a mafia boss' daughter falls head over heels n love with Seenu. How Seenu deals with this love triangle is revealed in the second half of the film. Seenu receives help in the matter from the countless Gods he holds conversations with.
This is Varun Dhawan's first role as the single male lead in a film. To sum up his contribution to the film let's just say his perfect body, chocolate-boy image, okay acting, and good dance steps seem to have done the trick.
Ileana D'cruz looks like she's a victim of malnutrition. Enough with the size zero already! And her role... the glamour and dance is A-okay, but we can't even say that about the acting.
Nargis Fakhri looks like a piece of something she ate is stuck in her throat. The acting isn't even worth a mention. But this film clearly didn't need an actor, rather it needed a herione, someone who could dance and look pretty.
For Arunoday Singh this film was his opportunity to show off his body.
The film's music is melodious, and easy on the ears. Most of the songs became hits even before the movie was released.
This film of David Dhawan's can do well since it's your typical masala, action-packed, complete entertainment flick.
Commercial entertainers in our recent Hindi films are going through a very confused stage. On one side, there are films which are making and breaking the Crore clubs, on the other side most of them are made on a project basis with forced entertainment followed by weak remakes of hit regional films. The basic ingredients required for all these films are entertaining script, super hit music, good comical and dramatic moments and most importantly the screen presence of the hero. It is because of this screen presence of the hero or the star power many superstars like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, etc manage to deliver a hit film despite of it being weak or bad. In order to do this any actor or superstar has to first believe in such types of films and have to connect with its mass audience, sadly none of these qualities are to be seen in our younger lot of actors who are mostly born and fed on a staple diet of international films. Due to which they fail to connect themselves with such types of masala entertainers and thus the whole conviction level is missing in their film. Still, the hunt for the mass hero from the younger lot is highly awaited and looks like with David Dhawan's latest film 'Main Tera Hero' we might finally get the superstar from the younger lot of actors. So, let's find out whether Varun Dhawan under the direction of his talented father will manage to give us the much awaited masala entertainer or might end up on the lines of his few contemporary actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and others whose films made under this genre turned out to be among their worst career decisions.
'Main Tera Hero' is story of Seenu (Varun Dhawan), who decides to get a degree from a well known college and make his parents proud. Life takes an unexpected turn as Seenu falls in love with his fellow student Sunaina (Ileana D'Cruz). On the other side, Inspector Angad (Arunoday Singh) is also in love with Sunaina and is highly possessive about her. Seenu fools Angad and keeps loving Sunaina until she too falls in love with him. Even before they could celebrate their romance, Sunaina is kidnapped and thus opens up a new chapter of their life with the intrusion of Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) who also loves Seenu madly. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.
Despite of the story being a remake of a Telugu film Kandireega, Main Tera Hero reminds us a massive combination of David Dhawan-Govinda-Salman films. You will remember many hit comical movies, even in small scenes or the characters of the film. Right from the first scene, the movie is highly entertaining and enjoyable. The dialogues are witty and rib crackling. There are many entertaining scenes like Varun dealing with Arunoday Singh, Varun speaking to Illeana on the phone in front of Arunoday Singh followed by Varun - Nargis track, Nargis meet with Arunoday, Varun's chat with gods, Ileana fooling Arunoday, Saurabh Shukla track followed by Varun kissing Illeana and many more. On the flip side, the second half starts on a bit of a dull note and as the movie progresses things keeps going on quite easily. In addition, the climax is a bit hurried and few tracks have not been elaborated in a proper manner. Milap Zaveri's witty writing works in favor of the film. Camera work is fine and editing is crisp and up to the mark.
Music by Sajid Wajid is highly popular with almost all foot-tapping tracks like 'Palat', 'Shanivaar Raati', 'Galat Baat Hain', 'Besharmi Ki Height' and the spoof over 'Batameez Dil'. These songs too will remind you of many old songs that will further help in keeping up the momentum of the film.
David Dhawan gave us many fantastic comedies with Govinda, Salman Khan and few more, and now he is back with his son Varun Dhawan. Thus, the expectations were very high from this talented, entertaining director when it came to his association with his son Varun Dhawan. He highly succeeds and gives us a decent entertainment that does full justice to his style of cinema. 'Main Tera Hero' is a proper mash up & tribute of all his hit films and associations with his leading man. He manages to give a decent entertainer with full paisa vasool type of feeling.
Varun Dhawan is outstanding in this film and has full potential to become a big superstar in the future. His screen presence, charisma and conviction level is very high and succeeds in pulling the entire film on his shoulders. His mannerisms, dialogue delivery, comical antics and foot tapping dances will remind you of Govinda and Salman Khan types of films, but with a dash of Varun's style. Ileana D'Cruz and Nargis Fakhri lend good support. Both of them look gorgeous and add up to the glam quotient. Arunoday Singh seemed totally out of place in this film. Anupam Kher with his echo type dialogs, Rajpal Yadav with his chamcha act and Saurabh Shukla's 'Singh Is King' type of track are superb. Shakti Kapoor, Raju Kher and Evelyn Sharma are wasted.
Dum? Well, this movie has all the dum, which you seek in and out in a masala entertainer. The movie is highly engaging and entertaining. The one-liners, star attitude of Varun, foot tapping music and delightful supportive acting makes this movie a sure shot winner. It might shy away for the intellectual film lovers as they like most of our other Hindi film actors might not be able to connect with the film. Nevertheless, with so many positive points attached to this movie, it will definitely cater to its targeted audience, as the movie is full of heroic entertainment in David Dhawan style.

Who isn't guilty of enjoying a little extra cheese and corn in their movies? David Dhawan has made a career serving up an abundance of ultra-corny entertainment. But slapstick is an acquired taste. Main Tera Hero (MTH) is a textbook David Dhawan movie. This is the kind of low-brow humour you enjoy without pretensions. It's not great cinema but it is a paisa vasool comedy.
The movie begins with the line, "Kutte ki dum aur Katrina Kaif ki Hindi kabhi seedhi nahin ho sakti." So you know what you're in for. But the age-old formula has worked before and the law of averages isn't going to change just yet. Most people will sit through MTH with a big grin plastered on their faces. And then some will hold their stomachs laughing hard because this film gives you unadulterated massy humour. And it is effective.
Varun Dhawan (Sreenath Seenu' Prasad) is a naughty, happy-go-lucky guy who almost everyone hates in his town but he's unapologetic about his ways. When he decides to go study in Bengaluru, he falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D'Cruz). Needless to say, there's a catch. She's engaged to a cop (Arunodaya Singh) with anger management issues. For most part, he's trying to outwit the angry young man. Enter Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri), who falls in love with Seenu. She's the daughter of the biggest gangster of Asia and Africa' (Anupam Kher) and desperately wants to possess him. The story though not refreshingly new accommodates enough gags and comedic punches needed to make a feel-good film. Some gags are genuinely hilarious. Like the bhajan tuned to Badtameez dil, Seenu's communication with God, Kher talking in echoes and many more. There are moments that make you cringe as well. But the end result of the comedy leaves a decent bittersweet taste.
The music of MTH is a winner all the way. Every song will make you want to dance. Palat... tera dhyaan kidhar hai and Galat baat are the pick of the lot. But ultimately, this movie belongs to Varun Dhawan. From the very first frame, Varun has your undivided attention. He may not be Govinda but his comic timing is impeccable. Especially, for a one-film old actor. Screen presence, acting chops; Prabhudheva like dancing skills, this boy has it all. Among the ladies, Ileana gives Varun ample support. She plays to the gallery with confidence and looks stunning too. Nargis' character is meant to be that of a beautiful distraction in the film and she succeeds at doing that. Arunodaya gets a half-baked (highly confusing) character, which will leave you baffled.
MTH is a good weekend watch with your family, girlfriend or gang of friends. This is pure popcorn entertainment made for hero worshiping masses. And the silver lining is Varun Dhawan, a treasure chest of talent. The next big hero waiting to happen.
Aniruddha Guha: A large part of the film is vintage David Dhawan, and cracks you up
The end-credits of Main Tera Hero features outtakes from the shoot. On a split-screen, you see director David Dhawan perform a scene on one side, the other showing son and actor Varun Dhawan aping him remarkably well. In the movie, that moment - a scene where Varun's character Sreenath Prasad aka Seenu enters the mansion of an Indian gangster based in Bangkok - reminds you of a Govinda scene in one of Dhawan's earlier film. Dhawan, it seems, has found his Govinda of 2014.
The David Dhawan-Govinda combination is undeniably legendary, the actor at the top of his game in the director's films, making many a drab scene light up with pure timing. A trademark of Dhawan's earlier films was that there was very little reliance on script; a lot of the humour rested on the camaraderie between the actors - Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Satish Kaushik, Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal and Johny Lever usually played the perfect foil to Govinda's histrionics - and improvisations brought scenes alive.
Dhawan channels the experience of all those films into his first collaboration with Varun (you can expect many more in the future), who probably spent a lot of his growing up years on the sets of those films, observing Govinda's mannerisms and process. The film is a remake of Telugu hit Kandireega, but features trademark Dhawan tropes - a peppy soundtrack, a hero who thinks on his feet, and long-drawn set-pieces.
The film compelled me to check Dhawan's IMDb page out, most of the director's last ten films turning out to be (not surprisingly) duds. Last year's Chashme Buddoor did fairly well at the box office, probably restoring his confidence, and he finds himself on firm ground with this one. In many ways, Main Tera Hero is vintage Dhawan, and cracks you up often.
Varun plays the over-smart, mildly annoying and irreverent Seenu without much difficulty (natural performance?), sometimes endearing and mostly exasperating, but never boring. His nemesis is a rowdy cop Angad (Arunoday Singh, a Sonu Sood-prototype), the two men locking horns over Sunaina (Ileana, a David Dhawan heroine-prototype). This part of the story is rather drab, where dialogue writer Milap Zaveri tries to squeeze in a pun every other scene, the effort making things seem less funny.
Things, however, pick up around the interval point, after Sunaina gets kidnapped by a gangster whose daughter, Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri-prototype), wishes to marry Seenu too. The rest of the film is, more or less, set on a single location - the gangster's bungalow in Bangkok - where one skit follows another, the story not really moving along but the humour keeping the film afloat. Tushar Hiranandani's screenplay is relentless and breezy, and Zaveri finds the zone that is more suitable to his one-liners. In a scene where Ayesha holds Seenu to give him skeet-shooting tips, he wonders aloud if this is how Basanti felt when Veeru touched her inappropriately in Sholay (It's funny).
Here too, it's the motley of supporting actors that save the day. Anupam Kher plays the gangster who grew up in Manali, and hence when he makes grand announcements, his voice echoes. (I laughed the first three times this happened, at least). Saurabh Shukla is his trusted lieutenant, who's aware of Seenu's devious plans but, wheelchair-bound, he can only whistle when he attempts to talk. Rajpal Yadav plays Rajpal Yadav, and gets some really funny lines. The one who elicits most laughter is Nargis Fakhri, who seems like a schoolgirl who turned up at annual day auditions without a clue in the world. Salman Khan steps in as the voice of God (future Morgan Freeman?).
Varun Dhawan is probably the reason this film got made in the first place and while he is no actor (yet), he seems to enjoy what he does and that translates well on screen. Breezy at best and hilarious in parts, Main Tera Hero is a trip down memory lane, where the original king of comedy - I mean David Dhawan here - regains some of his touch. Let's go the whole hog next time, Mr Dhawan.

Plot-
Seenu (Varun Dhawan) goes to Bangalore to complete his graduation and pursue a degree. In the college he falls in love at first sight with Sunaina (Ileana D'Cruz) and tries to impress him. Angad (Arunoday Singh) is a Dabangg and corrupt police officer who is madly in love with Sunaina. Angad's fear kept all the boys in the college away from Sunaina. Seenu decides to impress Sunaina and face Angad without any fear. Seenu wins Sunaina's heart. In the meantime Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) fell in love at first sight with Seenu and she want to marry Seenu. Ayesha's father Vikrant (Anupam Kher) is a big don and can do anything to keep her daughter happy. He kidnaps Sunaina and forces Seenu to marry her daughter. How will Seenu marry Sunaina? What will Angad do now? With a lot of twists, turns and laughter forms the basic plot of Main Tera Hero.
Direction-
David Dhawan has been making us laugh since almost two decades with so many Govinda and Salman Khan Movies like Hero No 1, Coolie No 1, Judwaa, Biwi No 1 etc. He is back in full form with Main Tera Hero. He knew what he wanted to show on the screen right from the start and does it with perfection. He has made sure that the movie does not have a single dull moment and the one liners keep coming at regular intervals. There have been instances in past few comic movies where the characters come out of nowhere and the comedy gets a bit loud but this time around every character comes on the screen with a proper backup story and the comedy does not get loud. Full marks to David Dhawan for this.
Music-
The music of Main Tera Hero is composed by David Dhawan's favorite Sajid Wajid. This time around they don't disappoint. All the songs are catchy and apt for the situation. All the four songs are peppy and don't look to be forced in the screenplay. They are well placed and leave a mark. The songs are not what you would want to have in your playlist but you won't mind dancing on them at a party. Tera Hero Idhar Hai and Besharmi Ki Height are the pick of the album
Technical Aspects-
The most important thing in a comedy movie are the dialogues. It is the dialogues which make you laugh and over here the dialogues by Milap Zaveri are funny. Despite a few one liners being lame, most of them make you laugh. The movie is well edited and has a perfect run time of around two hours twenty minutes. Main Tera Hero is produced by Balaji Productions and the production values are rich. The sets and the real life locations are grand. The cinematographer Sanjay F Gupta has managed to capture Bangkok as well as Bangalore very well. The background score by Sandeep Shirodkar is good and suits the situations. The action by Mahendra Verma is good. The action is designed keeping in mind Varun's personality and this is one thing which goes in favor in the action scenes. All the stars a styled very well.
Performances-
Main Tera Hero is all about the Hero of the movie Varun Dhawan AKA Seenu. Varun Dhawan sails through the character of Seenu. He is very confident and Main Tera Hero does not seem to be his second movie by long distance. He is David Dhawan's new Govinda as he has managed to do what Govinda used to do in the 90's. He is convincing the action sequences, looks stylish and acts well. He is surely a SUPERSTAR in making. Ileana D'Cruz and Nargis Fakhri play the roles of Sunaina and Ayesha. They both look hot throughout and do their part well. The surprise package in the movie is Arunoday Singh. He plays the role of Corrupt, Angry, Dabangg police officer with perfection. He brings the house down with his performance in the second half. Rajpal Yadav is surprisingly not irritating and manages to bring a smile on our face in various scenes. Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla all do their part well. This is one of the rare movies where all the actors have done a good job. Despite so many characters in the movie, there is not a single scene where the actors go over the top. Salman Khan comes forward as a surprise package. He has given his voice for various gods in the movie and his conversations with Seenu are hilarious.
Verdict-
Main Tera Hero is a vintage David Dhawan Movie which exceeds all the expectations. The movie delivers what it promised that is Entertainment, Entertainment and Entertainment. Despite the ordinary storyline, the situations created in the movie make you laugh. The movie is not a perfect situational comedy but a blend of Physical and Situational comedy. There are a few scenes which make you nostalgic about past David Dhawan movies like Kunwara and Saajan Chale Sasural. The movie has three Hero's ie Varun Dhawan, David Dhawan and Milap Zaveri. The movie is for people who want to enjoy a two and a half hour ride of clean entertainment. Go for it and get entertained. The HERO arrives with a BANG.
Varun Dhawan's Main Tera Hero Movie Review
The king of comedies David Dhawan is back yet again with another comic caper "Main Tera Hero" starring Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruz, Nargis Fakhri, Anupam Kher and others. Here is our review of Main Tera Hero. Plot- Seenu (Varun Dhawan) goes to Bangalore to complete his graduation and pursue a degree. In the college ...
Summary : The movie has three Hero's i.e Varun Dhawan, David Dhawan and Milap Zaveri. The movie is for people who want to enjoy a two and a half hour ride of clean entertainment. Go for it and get entertained. The HERO arrives with a BANG.
Story: Before we reveal the story let's be clear that this is a David Dhawan film and logic is not the mainstay of his films. They seem to be largely derivative and rely on smartly constructed gags and jokes. Main Tera Hero is a remake of the southern blockbuster Kandireega. The film is about Seenu (Varun Dhawan) who falls in love with Sunaina (Ilena D'cruz) who is married to a rowdy policeman called Angad (Arunoday Singh). Trouble arises when another girl called Ayesha falls in love with Seenu and her father is a big gangster who kidnaps Sunaina assuming that it would help Ayesha get hold of Seenu.
Review: David Dhawam who is a gold medalist from FTII Pune is known for his comedies which always strike a chord with the audience. With Main Tera Hero, he relaunches his son Varun Dhawan to his' audiences and is successful in doing so. Main Tera Hero is a smartly penned film with laugh-out-loud jokes and gags. David Dhawan holds the film together and lets it move at breakneck speed but in the process ends up introducing too many meaningless characters. However, Main Tera Hero works as a comedy film and the romantic angle is just an added afterthought, or so it seems. Dhawan basically has made his old brand of wine (the enjoyable type of wine we have grown up on) and given it a stylish modern branding.
Main Tera Hero Movie Review
It is stupid to expect world class technical work on a film like Main Tera Hero. However, the cinematography and the editing of the film all sync together to suit its genre. The music is one of the plus points of Main Tera Hero with Sajid-Wajid producing some foot tapping masala music. Besharmi Ki Height and Tera Hero Idhar Hai are the best songs in the film.
Acting: Varun Dhawan is the centre-piece of the film. His dad ensures that we get to see every aspect of the hero Varun. He gets to fight, to sing, to make funny imitations, to romance, and he even beats up the bad guys. He does all this very convincingly and it won't be too early to say that Varun can become a hugely popular star with the masses, something that none of the newcomers have managed to do. Ileana looks gorgeous and takes on a funny role for the first time with Main Tera Hero. Nargis has improved by leaps and bounds from her first film and even though her Hindi accent sounds bizarre she manages to scrape though without any major blemishes. Anupam Kher is funny after a long time. Saurabh Shukla again delivers a good comic performance. Arunoday Singh does a commendable job. And it is good to see Rajpal Yadav get back into his mould once again.
Conclusion: If you are in the mood for some madcap fun then Main Tera Hero is the perfect film for the season. Varun Dhawan delivers one of the funniest performances of the year and keeps us enthralled.
Box Office: Main Tera Hero is likely to take an average opening at the box office and should grow from Monday onwards if the youth likes the humour in it. The film will be affected by the cricket match today, and business will be further hit if India qualify for Sunday's T20 World Cup final.

Varun Dhawan is the centre-piece of the film. His dad ensures that we get to see every aspect of the hero Varun. He does all this very convincingly and it won't be too early to say that Varun can become a hugely popular star with the masses, something that none of the newcomers have managed to do.
MAIN TERA HERO is a wild, wacky, madcap entertainer that has the unmistakable stamp of the master of entertainers -- David Dhawan. An over the top plot, humor quotient and performances are three aces the film stands on. The film should work well with admirers of typical Bollywood masalathons, also because Varun Dhawan pulls off the act with flamboyance and bowls you over with an uproarious act in this zany entertainer. Go, have fun and laugh out loud!
Varun meshes Govinda, Michael Jackson and his own madness well. He gets better in a stronger second half, bolstered by gorgeous Nargis pouting, "Thenk you, Dadduz!" and the banter between Kher and snarling subordinate Bally (Shukla). Arunodaya surprises - the actor's evolved, pulling off threats and blushes to comic effect. Those seeking movies with meaning, note - Main Tera Hero is a pav bhaji picture, quick, spicy, hot. It has the depth of a comic strip but it also has its neon-shaded fun. For those who want a light laugh, here's your boy.
Varun is still a greenhorn but he does a decent job and also has good screen presence. He has a long way to go before he reaches Govinda's league so it might be better for him to carve his own path. Illeana and Nargis are the pretty props and they do just that. Poor Arunoday Singh seems to be the most confused as his character changes as per the scriptwriter's whim and fancy, without any warning whatsoever.
Main Tera Hero is an action-packed romantic comedy that is peppered with vivacious performances, peppy musical set pieces, and a breezy and an unusual love triangle that eventually acquires an additional angle.
Only and the best part about Main Tera Hero is that the film is high on energy, all thanks to Varun Dhawan. He is naturally a good actor and has a good screen presence. But he has tried a little too much to prove himself in his father's film.
Main Tera Hero has all the typicality of good David Dhawan entertainer which proudly introduces the new hero of the masses Varun Dhawan who has the potential to make his audience 'palat' to the theaters nearby and making them say.. hero idhaar hai..
Main Tera Hero rests almost solely on the bases of strong performances extracted by a tough taskmaster, director David Dhawan -- who makes a surprisingly clean film for the most part but doesn't seem to have been able to resist the temptation to indulge in a few less-than-tasteful jokes post-interval.
Keeping things largely distanced from logic, David clearly plays to his strengths. He knows nobody comes looking for any semblance of realism in his films. So he keeps it shamelessly mindless and there is nothing wrong with that. Full marks to his leading man Varun for carrying an improbable plot to the finish line, making it a fun one-time watch. This hero is here to stay.
If this film was made to establish Varun Dhawan as a comedy actor who can do something different then they have achieved what they wanted. Because he does put a great show together but there is absolutely nothing else that deserves any compliments. Ileana D'curz doesn't fit the role well however Nargis Fakri is not bad, she fits well in this masala comedy and doesn't disappoint. Music by Salman Khan's favourite music director duo Sajid -Wajid is quite good and that keeps the pace going.
Main Tera Hero is a complete entertainment film. The film has action, comedy, drama, romance, a lip lock, some glamour, a party number, a wedding number and a cute villain.
Main Tera Hero' is not as ghastly as a few recent Dhawans have been, but only because it takes itself not at all seriously, and becomes as silly as it should be for some of the second half . The rest of it has its share of the usual unsightly and tasteless gags about women and protruding body parts and the mandatory fat guy in a wheelchair.
The twists and turns in the film are timely. The comic timings are perfect. The facial expressions are superb. And lastly even though having an old formula, this film doesn't allow you to feel bored throughout the 128 minutes. Main Tera Hero is a full on entertainer. David Dhawan has presented a retro '90s style movie with peppy and foot-tapping music.
