Main Tera Hero movie review: Varun is the star of the movie as he carries the movie with an energetic and humorous performance

Posted On: 03 Apr 2014

Main Tera Hero movie review: Main Tera Hero which will see Varun Dhawan working for the first time with his father and famed director David Dhawan, is a remake of hit Telugu movie "Kandireega". Along with Varun Dhawan, the movie also features Illeana D'Cruz who made her debut with Ranbir Kapoor starrer "Barfi" and Nargis Fakhri who also made her debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Now, let's take a look at the story and the movie review of Main Tera Hero which promises to introduce the new age "Govinda".

Story Outline
Sheenu is a notorious man from Ooty who has driven whole town mad with his pranks and antics. He is weak in studies but make no mistake he is clever as protagonists played by Govinda in David Dhawan's earlier movies used to be. He takes admission in a Bangalore college where he meets beautiful Sunaina (Ileana D' Cruz) with whom he immediately falls in love. But Sunaina is forced to marry Angad (Arunoday Singh), a local goon.

Meanwhile, Sheenu has another lover Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) who had got impressed by his courage when he had bashed goons on train from Ooty to Bangalore to save her. Ayesha's father (Anupam Kher) kidnaps Sunaina to get back at Sheenu. So, how he gets out of this mess is story of the movie "Main Tera Hero".

Actor Performance
Undoubtedly, Varun is the star of the movie as he carries the movie with an energetic and humorous performance. His dialogue delivery, dancing and lively performance has an uncanny resemblance to the one Govinda used to deliver at his peak in many David Dhawan movies. The two actresses are nothing more than "eye candies" but they play this role with glamour and oomph. Anupam Kher in a role of funny gangster is hilarious. However, Arunoday fails to play the similar role.

Postive Points
Main Tera Hero is a trademark david Dhawan movie with good peppy music and lots of entertainment. The movie despite lack of great story keeps you interested and entertained till the very end. The dose of comedy and action is also very balanced in the movie.

Negative Points
The movie loses steam in the last 20 minutes and is a bit sluggish in the second half.

Verdict
Main Tera Hero is a classic masala entertainer which fulfills it's objective wonderfully.

Sandhira movie review rating - 3/5

MID Day

'MAIN TERA HERO'
U/A; COMEDY/DRAMA/ROMANCE
DIRECTOR: DAVID DHAWAN
CAST: VARUN DHAWAN, ILEANA D'CRUZ, NARGIS FAKHRI
RATING:

David Dhawan and Govinda teamed up in the '90s to give us a unique 'leave your brains at home' genre of films. Movies with their slapstick, unabashedly-playing-to-the-gallery kind of humour which entertained nevertheless, thanks to the silliness of it all and yes, due to Govinda's genius comic timing.

Varun Dhawan (centre), Ileana D'Cruz (right) and Nargis Fakhri in 'Main Tera Hero'

Dhawan tries to recreate the tried-and-tested formula with 'Main Tera Hero', although with one difference: Varun Dhawan replaces Govinda. But Dhawan plays it extra-safe by making Varun clone all of Govinda's mannerisms, his special dialogue delivery and also his tight white trousers look. One doesn't really mind the "inspired" performance, considering that Govinda deserves the tribute, but the whole exercise only makes you miss Govinda even more.

Varun Dhawan is Sreenath Seenu' Prasad, a wickedly mischievous chap who everyone seems to love to hate. Seenu decides to educate himself in Bangalore, but once in the campus he does everything but study. Seenu oscillates between talking to pictures and idols of God (God-ji responds in Salman Khan's voice, if you please) and wooing Sunaina (Illeana D'Cruz). Sunaina is already engaged to the terror of a policeman, Angad (Arunoday Singh). Seenu is the typical masala hero, who can flash his moobs at a moment's notice, beat multiple goons to pulp at a time and can also do enough pelvic thrusts for the songs in between. Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri), who is the daughter of a Asia aur Africa ka gangster' (multi-tasking, anyone?), played by Anupam Kher, falls for Seenu's charm and wants him for herself.

A hero playing out the frontbenchers' fantasy, the long-legged heroines showing skin and the innumerable gags might have worked wonders in the '90s. Two decades later, when the movies have gone through a rather dramatic transformation, it seems silly that Dhawan is still dealing the same old cards (with a new Joker, of course). The film does have some hilarious scenes, like Seenu's communication with God or when Kher's sentences end in an echo. Ironically, while the script and the film are refreshingly unpretentious, it's the simplicity that gets to you after a point. The flashy sets, the eardrum-challenging music and the sexy-but-intolerably dumb women might have worked two decades ago but now they just add to the overall cacophony.

Varun is still a greenhorn but he does a decent job and also has good screen presence. He has a long way to go before he reaches Govinda's league so it might be better for him to carve his own path. Illeana and Nargis are the pretty props and they do just that. Poor Arunoday Singh seems to be the most confused as his character changes as per the scriptwriter's whim and fancy, without any warning whatsoever.

A timepass of a movie, it can be watched once. Only wish Dhawan had taken some risks rather than sticking to the age-old formula that worked for him eons ago.

Main Tera Hero quick movie review: Govinda has taken rebirth in the form of Varun Dhawan!

The Student Of The Year actor has teamed up with the Rockstarand Barfi! babe for his second film!

Thanks to an entertaining trailer and peppy music, David Dhawan's Main Tera Hero starring Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruz and Nargis Fakhri had already created a lot of buzz amongst the youth. Our critic Prateek Sur is watching the film at a theatre right now and has sent his first impression of the action comedy.

Prateek says, " Main Tera Hero is a full on entertainer. David Dhawan has presented a retro style movie with peppy music. The film has all the ingredients of a typical masala film. The comic punches in this one are really catchy and Govinda seems to have taken rebirth in the form of Varun Dhawan. Though MTH isn't classic movie, it is a must watch for moviegoers who want just entertainment. So far there are only Varun and Ileana and the Rockstar babe will enter only in second half."

Keep watching this space for full movie review soon.

Bollywood review: Varun Dhawan fails to do a Salman Khan in 'Main Tera Hero'

Flamboyant filmmaker David Dhawan's movie merely shows doting father's love for his son and nothing else

By

Published Thursday, April 03, 2014

Varun Dhawan, flanked by Nargis Fakhri and Illeana D'Cruz.

Parents are often guilty of overlooking their children's flaws and believing that their kids are nothing less than geniuses.

Well, Main Tera Hero' is just an example of how a doting father indulges that weakness.

David Dhawan revives his brand of inane comedy and pushes his son Varun into the spotlight. There's just a handful of frames that don't feature Varun and those can be attributed as David's act of kindness to his audience.

What the director fails to remember is that much of his comedies banked entirely on the actor's fan following.

Whether it was Govinda's quirky style or Salman Khan's charming moves, they each added a unique flavour to the Dhawan comedy.

Those associations were much celebrated at the box office, despite the films not investing in intelligent humour and blatantly banking on buffoonery and unimaginative gags because of the big stars.

David's not-so-little boy, however, lacks that kind of talent or charisma to make these senseless rom-coms work. He, in fact, turns this comedy into a tragedy, unintentionally of course, despite earnestly following dad's rulebook on heroism.

Varun flashes his (newly acquired) six-abs, flexes his muscles, strips down to his shorts, flaunts his quirky pelvic moves (and even apes Michael Jackson a few times), and romances pretty, pencil-thin girls, but never quite emerges a likeable hero.

It's not his lack of experience (he's just a movie old) that we'd blame for the casting blunder, but his lack of uninhibited comic flair.

Even the two gorgeous women that his dad presents for him, are high on glam but low on talent. Not that David Dhawan heroines are required to do much other than flash their slender bodies and shake them to funky beats, but even those simple feats appear exhausting for Nargis Fakhri and Illeana D'Cruz.

The supporting cast is reduced to mere caricatures, with seasoned actors like Saurabh Shukla muted out midway, and Anupam Kher left to echo his own voice.

Even the hunk Arunoday Singh finds a schizophrenic baddie to portray, whose knock-knock' games turn excruciatingly annoying after a point. Probably his lack of enthusiasm in clowning around is evident in how he turns this act into his (tiny) Bollywood career's all-time low.

While it's tough to find the weakest link, Nargis' pout is a prominent contender.

The jokes on Bollywood star Katrina Kaif's broken Hindi, or the attempt at tweaking one of Ranbir Kapoor's popular dance track, or even injecting Salman's name at every given opportunity falls flat.

If anything, Main Tera Hero' requires a certain amount of willpower to watch the entire film even when you know that freedom and sanity is just a door away.

Don't step in. Not if you have a choice.

Main Tera Hero Movie Review: Two Dhawans, too over the top

Dailybhaskar.com | Apr 03, 2014, 21:28PM IST

Varun Dhawan's Main Tera Hero comes with a strong message for the society. It's time we stop watching boisterous, mindless & slapstick cinema, or the filmmakers will start making films which will be difficult to bear for even 15 minutes.

Even if you dare to apply your 1% brain while watching Main Tera Hero then the possibility is really high that you might end up walking out of the cinema way before the film ends.

Director David Dhawan has tried to make us believe that Salman Khan, Govinda, Shahid Kapoor, Akshay Kumar are all pass because there is one actor (who is also his son) Varun Dhawan, who can act (copy) like all these actors in one film.

Movie starts with Varun Dhawan's dialogue, "Bhai Kahte hain: mujhpe 1 aihsan karna, mujpe koi aishsan mat karna."

No doubt the father-son duo was so much impressed with Sallu bhai that Main Tera Hero appears to be influenced from Ready!. Not just the film's shooting location is same, but some actin scenes have been lifted from the Salman's film.

There was a great chance for Varun Dhawan to establish himself amongst the new generation superstars as the trailers and songs of the film generated too much excitement, but his fans will be disappointed.

How is David Dhawan's direction?

Two Dhawans are too much over the top. There is no surprise element in David Dhawan's style of cinema now. As a viewer,it hurts, that we already know the baseless lies and the silly excuses for them. Everything has become predictable now. David Dhawan has gone a bit extra mile this time in stupidity. most of the situations and incidents are colossally unbelievable.

How is Varun Dhawan's acting and his chemistry with Nargis and Ileana.

Only and the best part about Main Tera Hero is that the film is high on energy, all thanks to Varun Dhawan. He is naturally a good actor and has a good screen presence. But he has tried a little too much to prove himself in his father's film.

If in one scene, he appears to be copying Shahid Kapoor, in other, he looks like copying Salman Khan and Govinda.

Also, Varun Dhawan and Ileana's chemestry is something to look for. Out of the two stars which we have given to Main Tera Hero; 1' is for the film and the other 1' is for Varun Dhawan.

Varun should start learning from his counterparts including Ranbir and Ranveer, or he will be one film wonder.

Big Question- Should I watch the film?

All we can say is- Varun, bhai (Salman) sahi kahten hai, "humpe 1 eahsan karna, yeh eahsan dobara mat karna."

Five reasons why you should not watch Main Tera Hero:

1) There is no surprise element.

2) Varun Dhawan appears to be copying Salman, Govinda and even Shahid Kapoor.

3) The film is too over the top. The story is hard to digest.

4) Second half is boring and unbearable.

5) The humour element is missing too.

Movie Review: Main Tera Hero

CINEMA | DAVID DHAWAN | HINDI MOVIES | ILEANA D'CRUZ | MAIN TERA HERO | NARGIS FAKHRI | VARUN DHAWAN

(Any opinions expressed here are those of the author and not of Thomson Reuters)

When you think about it, David Dhawan 's latest comedy is more tragic than comic. In almost every frame of "Main Tera Hero ", you see glimpses of a film-maker desperately trying to restore his former glory by using the same gags in a newer, more polished setting " and failing miserably.

When Dhawan hit box-office gold in the 1990's, the humour in his films was often crude and irreverent. His most successful leading man,Govinda , often played a flashy, street-smart but pudgy hero.

In "Main Tera Hero", Dhawan's leading man " his son Varun " has a perfectly sculpted body (which he is not averse to showing off; even the film's credits show him flexing muscles and working out) and there are holier-than-thou lectures on how men should stop objectifying women.

Keep in mind though that 10 minutes after this lecture, Dhawan's character Seenu (short for Srinivas Prasad) compares a girl to a pre-paid SIM card that has been registered in someone else's name.

This is the launch film that Dhawan clearly had in mind for his son. Varun gets to do everything " fighting off villains, dancing with two women, making funny faces. The rest of the cast, it would seem, is around just to service these actions. As a college student who does everything but study, Seenu displays his buff body at every opportunity.

He falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D'Cruz ) on the first day of college, but his overtures are discouraged because Angad (Arunoday Singh ), a local policeman with an anger management problem, is in love with her. To add to the chaos, Sunaina is kidnapped by Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri ), the daughter of "the biggest drug lord in Asia and Africa". Ayesha is in love with Seenu, and is sure that kidnapping Seenu's girlfriend would make him come after her. Why not just kidnap Seenu then, you might ask. But this is not the time and place for logic.

Thus, Seenu finds himself in a plush villa, surrounded by two women lusting after him. Ayesha's drug lord father (Anupam Kher ) and his trusty sidekick (Saurabh Shukla ) keep an eye on Seenu. A wedding date for Ayesha and Seenu is set, and then Angad arrives.

There are murders; people hiding in closets; wedding songs; and long discussions between Seenu and various gods " including Jesus, Ganesha and Krishna (Jesus speaks in English; the others speak in Hindi).

"Main Tera Hero" has dialogue as puerile as, "since the time I have been in Pampers (a diaper brand), my father has pampered me." The comedy just gets more tedious and unfunny as the film progresses. Except for a couple of jokes, nothing, and I mean nothing, is salvageable in this disaster of a film.

Yikes hopefully he doesn't make the mistake of copying Salman in his next flick, that seems to be the problem a lot of people had with this one... Varun you gotta walk your own path man, no one will waste their money to go see you aping Salman when the real one is still here..
I still think MTH will be a hit tho...Good Luck to Varun

Story: Seenu loves Sunaina but they're chased by a stalking cop, an infatuated beauty and her mafia don dad - can Seenu's heroics work?

Review: Main Tera Hero (MTH) is a glittering vehicle for star son Varun Dhawan to drive, which he does with practiced panache. However, even more than Junior, MTH has his dad David Dhawan stamped all over it. Hence, eternally smiling Seenu (Varun) is unfazed by failure or goons. Seenu pauses from cheeky grinning only to dance and romance, falling for Sunaina (Ileana), stalked by violent Angad (Arunoday) and sidekick Peter (Rajpal). More superhero than hero, Seenu shows Angad his mean fight moves, but finds himself captured by ardent Ayesha (Nargis), whose 'Dadduz' Vikrant (Kher) is the biggest don of Asia and Africa too! How can Seenu get out of so many clutches?

This being a David Dhawan movie, things get complicated but never grim. Thus, MTH's mafia dons are portly, chuckling men, the hero expresses love by asking, "Do you want to make the frandship with me?", Ayesha makes Seenu recall Basanti pawed by Veeru, and that lovely 1990s' filmi word - "Unkil!" - resounds once again. Seenu even does a brilliant bhajan take-off on Budtameez Dil. The plot is familiar Dhawan territory - one boy, two babes, a mansion and many clowns - but with new landmarks, from plunging bikinis to lip-glossed kisses, thrown in.

Varun meshes Govinda, Michael Jackson and his own madness well. He gets better in a stronger second half, bolstered by gorgeous Nargis pouting, "Thenk you, Dadduz!" and the banter between Kher and snarling subordinate Bally (Shukla). Arunodaya surprises - the actor's evolved, pulling off threats and blushes to comic effect. Those seeking movies with meaning, note - Main Tera Hero is a pav bhaji picture, quick, spicy, hot. It has the depth of a comic strip but it also has its neon-shaded fun. For those who want a light laugh, here's your boy.
Main Tera Hero: wild, wacky, madcap entertainer that has the unmistakable stamp of the master of entertainers -- David Dhawan.
By Taran Adarsh, 4 Apr 2014, 07:14 hrs IST
Until sometime back, the masala film space was dominated by Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Govinda. Subsequently, Shah Rukh Khan stepped in. Just when you thought that the young brigade would look the other way, abstaining from non-stop entertainers, Ranbir Kapoor green-lit BESHARAM, Shahid Kapoor gave his nod to R... RAJKUMAR and Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor gave the go ahead to GUNDAY. Now Varun Dhawan, a relative newcomer, opts for the tried and tested genre in his very second outing -- MAIN TERA HERO. Interestingly, he teams up with his father, David Dhawan, a veteran at masalathons, who has worked with the above-mentioned seniors [except SRK].

David Dhawan's filmography tilts heavily towards remakes and the veteran's latest endeavor MAIN TERA HERO is a remake as well -- of the immensely successful Telugu film KANDIREEGA [2011]. A lot is riding on MAIN TERA HERO, since it teams up the father and son Dhawan for the first time. Will Dhawan Sr.'s magic wand work again, like it did in the past?

Let's enlighten you about the premise of MAIN TERA HERO. Seenu [Varun Dhawan] is terrible in studies. When his father [Manoj Pahwa] cites instances of Seenu's friends enrolling in various universities and emerging toppers, Seenu decides that he too would enroll in a university and make his parents proud. Seenu encounters Sunaina [Ileana D'Cruz] in the university and it's love at first sight for him. However, Angad [Arunoday Singh], a cop, is also in love with Sunaina and intends marrying her, much against her wishes.

Seenu throws a challenge at Angad that he will win Sunaina's heart and as luck would have it, he makes Sunaina falls in love with him within three days. Just when everything seems to be sailing smoothly for the couple, Sunaina gets kidnapped by a don based in Bangkok [Anupam Kher], whose daughter Ayesha [Nargis Fakhri] -- whom Seenu had saved from eve teasers -- is in love with Seenu.

Seenu is in a dilemma. What happens next?

Watching a David Dhawan movie is akin to having your fav fast-food, which may not be high on nutrition [read meaningful content], but you relish it with glee since it whets your appetite. And MAIN TERA HERO does that to you. Packed with just about every mass-friendly ingredient available on the shelf, which the hoi polloi laps up with delight, David designs an entertainer that keeps you amused for most parts. Sure, there's nothing you haven't watched before, but the trick is to keep the viewer completely absorbed in the proceedings and David has mastered the art since decades.

Writer Tushar Hiranandani adapts KANDIREEGA for the Hindi movie audience, making sure there's no room for boredom for most parts. The twists in the tale, the aimed-at-masses humor, the witty and comical dialogue [Milap Zaveri], which are one of the highlights of this film, the assorted characters with over the top acts, the appropriate situations for songs and action pieces... the packaging of MAIN TERA HERO is just precise -- a formula that seldom goes wrong, if handled correctly.

In addition, David presents Varun as the *young* mass-friendly hero. He makes Varun do stuff that sends front-benchers into raptures, which includes Varun flaunting his torso and flexing muscles. Moreover, David, very smartly, makes Varun slip into the shoes of his peers by making him do stuff that had worked big time with Sanju, Salman, Akshay and Govinda in the past. And Varun carries off the antics adroitly.

The sole blemish I can point out is the excessive length towards the post-interval portions, with a few sequences appearing stretched without any reason. The entire episode involving Shakti Kapoor also appears forced, while the journey to the culmination could've been taut and crisp.

The soundtrack [Sajid-Wajid], much like David's earlier ventures, fits the genre of the film seamlessly. 'Palat', 'Besharmi Ki Height' and 'Shanivaar Raati' are foot-tapping compositions. Action sequences are well orchestrated.

Varun steals the show with an act that's sure to multiply his fan-following by heaps. Not just in metros, but beyond metros. The film offers Varun abundant scope to play to the gallery, own every sequence he features in. His energy levels coupled with his self-assured act and striking looks fall wonderfully in place here. He's terrific, the show belongs to him, no two opinions on that! Ileana pairs off very well with Varun and does a reasonably good job. Nargis Fakhri looks great, but needs to polish her acting skills. Anupam Kher is in super form. His mafioso act with reverberating dialogue is sure to be loved by the junta. Saurabh Shukla is superb, especially towards the latter part of the film. It's a delight to watch Arunoday Singh in a mass entertainer. He seems most comfortable in the given space. Rajpal Yadav manages to raise a few good laughs. Evelyn Sharma, Manoj Pahwa, Raju Kher and Supriya Shukla are just right. Shakti Kapoor is wasted.

On the whole, MAIN TERA HERO is a wild, wacky, madcap entertainer that has the unmistakable stamp of the master of entertainers -- David Dhawan. An over the top plot, humor quotient and performances are three aces the film stands on. The film should work well with admirers of typical Bollywood masalathons, also because Varun Dhawan pulls off the act with flamboyance and bowls you over with an uproarious act in this zany entertainer. Go, have fun and laugh out loud!

MAIN TERA HERO Gives BirthTo New Star

Pluses:Varun Dhawan excels in every department - be it action, dance, comedy or romance, Illeana and Nargis Fakhri look hot and fit the bill, chartbuster music, crisp editing, funny dialogues, Saurabh Shukla and Rajpal Yadav create laugh riotMinuses:Arunodya Singh fails to make impact, Anupam Kher sleepwalks, film takes bit time to get goingCritic Rating:3.5/5Business Rating:4.5/5

Verdict:Watch itfor complete dose of fantastic entertainmentDetailed Analysis:David Dhawan gave some big massy hits in 90's and made Govinda over night star. But his son made debut under guidance of Karan Johar but now father isout thereto present his son the way only he knows to do - 1110% completeBollywoodhero who can dance, sing, mimic and romance.Film has simple plot - a nasty guy Sree Prasad (Varun Dhawan) from Ooty who is thrown out of the town virtually to go to Bangalore and prove himself. There he fallsin love withSunaina (Illeana) but then there is a cop Angad Bedi (Arunodaya Singh) who is in one side love with Sunaina. Angad Bedi bets Sree Prasad to 'pataofied' Sunania in three days and as one can expect, he does the same. And then Sunaina is kidnapped by some gangster (Anupam Kher) because his daughter his daughter Nargis Fakhri wants to marry Sree Prasad. From there on there is complete chaos in 2nd half and how both the girls get their love is the climax of the story.Performance wise, Varun Dhawan simply excel in every department. He dances like crazy in 'Saturday Night', he romances with all innocence and he fights with all the energy. This is for sure birth of new star for masses as he makes sure that one can not feel boredom, not for a second. Illeana looks good and that was her job. Nargis Fakhri is funny and looks hotter than ever. Anupam Kher and Arunodaya Singh are only sore points in this otherwise perfect entertainer. Rajpal Yadav and Saurabh Shukla are riot inthis oneand Shakti Kapoor irritates as usual in brief role. Evelyn Sharma plays girlfriend of Anupam Kher and has not much to do.Editing is crisp and film never loses its speed except 1st 20 minutes. Story has nothing new to offer but dialogues by Milap Zaveri are outstanding. Watch out for echo effect in dialogues of Anupam Kher and almost every 2nd line of Vaun Dhawan. Camerawork by Sanjay F Gupta lifts the production value and music adds so much to this romantic comedy. All 4 songs are chartbusters which is rarity these days. But it is director David Dhawan who once again proves that once a genius always a genius. He repeats himself from 90's but the whole energy on screen and zing make this film a sure shot hit..Film will release today and should get 2000 plus screens. Film will get quite an open run and onlycricket world cupwill provide some resistance. Film should open big and will be looking forwardfor big26-27 cr nett weekend if not more.Go forthis onetypical song, dance, comedy and action entertainer is your cup of tea!
