Movie Review 'Main Tera Hero': There is something about fathers directing sons
Kusumita Das | April 04, 2014, 08.04 am IST

Varun Dhawan (centre) with his leading ladies Nargis Fakhri (left) and Ileana D'Cruz in the film 'Main Tera Hero'.
Rating: 3 stars

Director: David Dhawan

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruz, Nargis Fakhri, Anupam Kher

David Dhawan is back and Varun Dhawan has arrived. Main Tera Hero marks the birth of this new age Govinda. Dance moves, check; histrionics, check; ear-to-ear grin, check; comic timing, double check. Add to this six-pack abs and a boyish charm, and he's truly tera hero, at least in what we'd like to call the David Dhawan cult of Hindi cinema.

There's something about fathers directing sons in films. Remember Rakesh Roshan's glittering launchpad for Hrithik in Kaho Na Pyar Hai? David's film too is a vanity project of similar proportions, where papa Dhawan is out to show the world that the erstwhile "Student Of The Year" is every bit "hero" material as well.

And he does make a point. Varun very effortlessly becomes Seenu Prasad, an idler from Conoor, who manages to stay likeable even as he kidnaps his teacher's daughter for two extra marks to pass in his exams. That's how Seenu makes an entry in the film and it's enough to get a fair idea of what's to come. He drops out of college only to get admission in another one, and this time he makes a promise to himself that he will get a degree.

But when he falls for the college hottie Sunaina (Ileana D'Cruz), his father's prophesy, yeh degree nahi, third degree layega' begins to ring ominously true. The rest of the film is packed with David Dhawan essentials --- a story (or the lack of it) that plays out in a fancy villa where swimming pool is a must, along with foot-tapping music, a set of goons who are unintentionally funny and one liners, that are sometimes witty, sometimes tacky, like for instance "Tere aagey toh Dennis bhi menace nahi lagta." (Yeah, I know). But somehow when they all come together, they manage to entertain. Just laugh. Don't ask yourself why.

David indulges in a lot of Bollywood jokes. From Katrina Kaif's questionable Hindi, to Ranbir Kapoor's Barfi smile, not much is spared. Varun even does a bhajan version of Ranbir'sBadtameez Dil, which is one of the highlights of the film. His six-packs and Nargis Fakhri's never-ending curves keeps the X-factor high. Ileana's sweet girl act balances it out.

There are a few generous lip locks too. But what binds the film together is Varun's relentless energy. From romantic scenes, to dance steps, to action sequences, this actor packs a punch, pun totally intended. He has the best lines and he justifies why. In fact, he even manages to elevate some average lines just by way of dialogue delivery. The supporting cast comprising Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla and Rajpal Yadav among others remains rock solid. Kher's "echoes" are a laugh riot. Arunoday Singh does his bit as a comical villain, while Shukla's slow speech accelerates the fun.

Keeping things largely distanced from logic, David clearly plays to his strengths. He knows nobody comes looking for any semblance of realism in his films. So he keeps it shamelessly mindless and there is nothing wrong with that. Full marks to his leading man Varun for carrying an improbable plot to the finish line, making it a fun one-time watch. This hero is here to stay.

Review: Main Tera Hero is total paisa vasool! - Rediff

April 04, 2014 09:25 IST

Nargis Fakhri, Varun Dhawan and Ileana D'Cruz in Main Tera HeroNot exactly meant for family audiences, Main Tera Hero is a refreshingly unpretentious, says Paloma Sharma.

The first in a long enough list of good news is that at least, for once, it is original(ish).

Bollywood has owed us, the faithful, one for a while now and it's been a long time coming.

Perhaps the most refreshing thing about Main Tera Hero is that it features no superstars in the lead role which gives you the chance to watch Varun Dhawan transform from that-guy-who-isn't-Siddharth-Malhotra to Varun Dhawan.

A blend of Salmaan Khan's cool, Shahid Kapoor's energy and Govinda's dance moves, Dhawan redefines the words 'screen presence' with his high-voltage performance.

A slight reminder of a more raw Ranveer Singh from Band Baaja Baaraat, one can only wish Dhawan hadn't debuted with Student of the Year or he'd easily have had a higher ranking among his contemporaries.

Ileana D'Cruz is not to be left behind as Dhawan's love interest, shedding the solemn air from her debut Hindi release (Barfi!) to reveal a more fun side (which I personally prefer).

Dhawan stars as Srinath Prasad, a happy-go-lucky 25-year-old from Coonoor, who is the apple of his mother's eye and the bane of his father's existence. Srinath -- or Seenu, as everyone so lovingly calls him -- hasn't passed out of college in quite a while and his father taunts him over not having earned a degree.

Unable to bear it, he departs from home and ends up in Bangalore at a college called TIFT where he bumps into Sunaina (D'Cruz).

Despite vague warnings from several students, Seenu continues to pursue Sunaina in perfectly filmy fashion but thankfully, this film also features minimal rowdy behaviour on the hero's part, as well as consent.

Sunaina too has feelings for Seenu but is terrified into silence by her fears of what her stalker and his gang of TIFT's most notorious boys might do to him.

Sunaina's stalker is no ordinary man. He is the feared Angad Negi (Arunoday Singh) -- a powerful police officer with severe anger issues who has manipulated Sunaina into agreeing to marry him -- but Seenu is not afraid of him.

Ever the trickster, Seenu devices plan to save Sunaina from Angad but unbeknownst to the three of them, someone else is in the picture; and like Angad, she too equates love with possession.

Before I go any further I should probably clarify that after bearing Aisha and Jism 2, Main Tera Hero has made me fall just a little bit in love with Arunoday Singh. His transition from the big, bad cop to nothing more than soft putty in his lady love's hands is aww-inducing.

Singh displays great comic timing and greater range as he goes through the film delicately balancing Inspector Angad Negi's persona between black and white.

Negi's assistant, Peter, is portrayed by the evergreen Rajpal Yadav who is back in his element after a while. I'm grateful to the makers of Main Tera Hero for giving Yadav the kind of screen time he deserves to be able to truly entertain, and not just be a jester in the court of the kings and queens of Bollywood.

Incidentally, Yadav also has a kissing scene of sorts. Watch out for that one.

After two cringe-worthy releases (Gang of Ghosts and O Teri), Anupam Kher is seen enjoying his screen space as Vikrant, the bhai from India to Africa, who has only one weakness -- his daughter, Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri).

Kher's cheesy, insipid act (and I mean that in a good way) is just the boost that Main Tera Hero needed in the second half of the film. Meanwhile, Fakhri has improved by leaps and bounds but is yet to really get there.

Main Tera Hero rests almost solely on the bases of strong performances extracted by a tough taskmaster, director David Dhawan -- who makes a surprisingly clean film for the most part but doesn't seem to have been able to resist the temptation to indulge in a few less-than-tasteful jokes post-interval.

The second half is primarily where the problem lies. The script dwindles slightly. Too many characters with too many subplots emerge, messing things up for a bit.

Nevertheless, Main Tera Hero keeps you on your feet and Milap Zaveri's crisp dialogues never fail to extract a chuckle. Artfully edited and kept at just the right length of 128 minutes, it never gives you a chance to yawn.

The soundtrack is thankfully devoid of the usual mandatory sufi-pop track and instead chooses to go the masala way, which suits the energy film a lot more. However, the songs still remain largely unrelated to the story and keep cropping up randomly.

Main Tera Hero largely belongs to Varun Dhawan but not exclusively so.

It is to him what Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani was to Ranbir Kapoor -- and Main Tera Hero could have been there, at the same level as APKGK, had a little more thought been put into the production design.

Main Tera Hero succeeds where films like R... Rajkumar, Chennai Express and Phata Poster Nikla Hero failed.

Not exactly suitable for family audiences, Main Tera Hero is a total seeti-maar, paisa vasool film and refreshingly unpretentious.

Also, Arunoday Singh.

Just saying.

Main Tera Hero movie review

Cast:Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruz, Nargis Fakhri, Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla and Rajpal Yadav
Director: David Dhawan

SPOILERS AHEAD

It is with much trepidation that one approaches Bollywood comic romps these days. They tend to hinge more on heavy-handed buffoonery than on genuine hilarity.

Main Tera Hero has both strains of comedy, the crass and the truly funny, but in the end it is the latter that dominates.

The sheer absurdity of the screwball plot does not weigh unduly heavy on the film because the likeable oddballs that populate it quickly get on top of things.

Of course, amid the frantic pace of Main Tera Hero, the one-film-old and understandably over-enthusiastic Varun Dhawan is frequently in danger of tripping over the line.

Obviously keen to graduate from student to superstar, the lead actor dances, fights and romances his way through the film with great gusto. He manages to retain his balance. No mean feat that.

The wacky screenplay (Tushar Hiranandani) is driven by a go-as-you-like, act-as-you-please spirit that is further fanned by the no-holds-barred dialogue (Milap Zaveri).

That gives the actors the leeway to be completely batty.

Main Tera Hero is a laugh riot, unapologetically mindless but infectiously boisterous and off-the-wall.

Do not look for logic and sense here. Just sit back and enjoy the harmless lunacy unleashed by a bunch of cranks whose actions would make little sense if they were to be judged by the rules normal human behaviour.

Main Tera Hero is an action-packed romantic comedy that is peppered with vivacious performances, peppy musical set pieces, and a breezy and an unusual love triangle that eventually acquires an additional angle.

The liberal doses of zaniness and some of the over-the-top directorial touches are reminiscent of the David Dhawan of yore.

The film certainly has its share of moments (especially in the early parts of the first half) that aren't particularly effective.

These slip-ups could leave the less patient segments of the audience squirming in their seats and wondering what the hell is going on.

However, once Main Tera Hero warms up and settles into its chosen off-kilter rhythm, it hurtles along without let and sets itself up nicely for a bouncy climax that is as crazy as anything else that the film has on offer.

The story, which is clearly only a pretext to hang the film's many gags on, delivers frantic twists and turns that strain credulity.

But the situations do not seem to be out of place in the context of the misadventures of a college laggard (Varun Dhawan) who moves from Ooty to Bangalore to get a life.

But in the big bad city, the loose cannon courts even bigger trouble by daring to aggressively woo a pretty college mate (Ileana D'Cruz), who a rogue policeman (Arunoday Singh) wants to marry no matter what.

The hero converses with the gods, needles the boorish cop and continues on his merry ways until his botched-up life takes another turn.

Unbeknown to him, the daughter (Nargis Fakhri) of a gangster (Anupam Kher) is smitten by the young man.

All hell breaks loose when he finds himself in the mobster's den in Bangkok.

In the free-for-all that ensues, he is not only caught between the two girls in his life but is also compelled to think on his feet and devise ways to keep the clumsy cop at bay.

Director David Dhawan conjures up a world where anything goes, take it or lump it.
The college that the hero goes in order to acquire a degree does not resemble any educational institution that exists anywhere in our part of the world.

The dreaded Bangkok mafia don whose beloved daughter falls in love with the unsuspecting male protagonist does very little that could justify his pre-eminent billing in the world of crime.

But then, Main Tera Hero isn't remotely interested in creating a real college campus where boys and girls fret over mundane things like attending classes and preparing for examinations.

Nor does the film intend to etch out a fearsome figure of a bloodthirsty gangster who needs no provocation to pull the trigger on his adversaries. Instead, he arouses more mirth than fear.

That is the kind of film Main Tera Hero is. It is designed as a madcap escapade and that is all there is to it.

Varun Dhawan pumps every ounce of strength into serving the film's avowed purpose.
D'Cruz and Fakhri provide ideal foils to the male lead although the latter's character is sketchy and her Hindi diction way too dodgy.

The lead trio is well supported by an array of comic talent - Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla and Rajpal Yadav. When they are on the screen, even the less convincing passages pass muster.

Saurabh Shukla as the gangster's wise-cracking sidekick and Yadav as the cop's bullied assistant are the best of the lot.

As one character in the film reminds another, forget the words, just focus on the emotions. In fact, it would be wise to ignore the emotions too.

Main Tera Hero, for all its excesses, is held together by its sustained comic energy. The sillier it turns, the better it gets.

The film has enough laugh-out-loud situations for the audience not to be overly put off by the screenplay's obvious rough edges.

Give Main Tera Hero a shot. Not quite vintage David Dhawan, but it comes pretty close.

Main Tera Hero movie review: David Dhawan gets back his Govinda charm in Varun Dhawan!

The king of comedy is back with a mindless but full on entertaining movie

David Dhawan is blessed to have a son like Varun Dhawan! Varun not just brings out his own best but also seems to have brought back the same old energy in papa Dhawan. Main Tera Hero is a typical David Dhawan style movie, which is light-hearted, formulaic, masaledaar but full on energy! Senior Dhawan's past few films have not being doing that well at the box office and people considered the reason was the ageing of his best leading man"Govinda. But it seems David has found the perfect replacement for Govinda in son Varun Dhawan.

In Main Tera Hero, David uses a tried and tested formula but has given a new dimension to it, which is lot more energetic and has many such comic punches which will be pretty popular among the masses. He has been ably supported by a good screenplay and some terrific one-liners. This movie will not be an extraordinary cult classic comedy, but will give you wholesome entertainment.

Sajid-Wajid's music is splendid. Each track has been brilliantly composed so as to make your foot tap at every beat. Tracks like Besharmi ki height, Shanivaar raati and Palat are well choreographed as well.

The Plot

The story revolves around Sreenath Prasad aka Seenu (Vaun Dhawan) the most notorious boy in Ooty. He drop out from his college in Ooty in order to pursue education in a Bangalore college. Here he falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D' Cruz). But Sunaina is forced to marry Angad (Arunoday Singh), a local police officer, who is more of a terrorising gangster.

Seenu also has another die-hard lover in the form of Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri), of whom he is unaware till the first half. He had once saved her friends from some goons by bashing the pulp out of them and Ayesha instantly knew that he was the perfect man for her. Ayesha's father (Anupam Kher) is a big gangster and kidnaps Sunaina to get hold of Seenu and compel him to marry his daughter. Now how Seenu gets screwed up in this love triangle, and how he uses his mind and muscle to strike back and come out victorious, is the basis of the film.

Performances

Varun Dhawan has given his 200 percent in the film and David Dhawan has utilized it to the best of his abilities. Varun literally carries the entire film on his shoulders. He has a bout of untapped energy, which has undoubtedly been captured well in this film. His talents are explored and he definitely is one actor to look forward to in the near future. His performance is lively and with every dialogue he leaves an ignorant smile on your face. His dance is full on Govinda-ish and it forces you to stand up and join him with every step. There are some scenes where you actually start seeing Govinda in Varun's acting.

Ileana D' Cruz is good and surprisingly Nargis Fakhri too. Both the heroines manage to add that necessary oomph in the movie and also couple it with some good acting. Arunoday Singh is the perfect eccentric-gangster-extortionist villain in the first half, but somehow he turns comical in the second half, which is at all not good. Anupam Kher as the funny don seems more comical than terrorising. On the contrary his right hand, played by Saurabh Shukla, does a very good job and manages to terrify you and at the same time tickle your funny bone. Rajpal Yadav is also hilarious and delivers a commendable performance. Rajpal Yadav's character reminds you of Johnny Lever from any of the '90s David Dhawan flicks. Shakti Kapoor's cameo is also well-timed.

Verdict

The twists and turns in the film are timely. The comic timings are perfect. The facial expressions are superb. And lastly even though having an old formula, this film doesn't allow you to feel bored throughout the 128 minutes. Main Tera Hero is a full on entertainer. David Dhawan has presented a retro '90s style movie with peppy and foot-tapping music. For all those who read the quick movie review I had said that Govinda seems to have taken rebirth in the form of Varun Dhawan', and I was no bit wrong. See this film for Varun Dhawan and watch him do his herogiri in full on Govinda style. Though Main Tera Hero isn't a cult comedy movie, it is a must watch for cinegoers who want just entertainment, entertainment and entertainment!

Main Tera Hero Review

Main Tera Hero Movie Poster

Rating: 3/5 Stars (Three stars)

Star cast: Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruz, Nargis Fakhri, Arunoday Singh, Anupam Kher, Evelyn Sharma, Saurabh Shukla, Rajpal Yadav

Director: David Dhawan

What's Good: The well baked first half, the well implanted comic timing of its dialogues and mostly Varun's scorching screen presence.

What's Bad: The second half of the film is relatively loose and gets languid as the laughs get infrequent and repetitive.

Loo break: Some.

Watch or Not?: David Dhawan has always symbolized the junk genre of cinema which is delicious to the core and revels in its mindlessness.Main Tera Hero is a must watch, that constantly has you laughing in its 120 minutes plus of runtime. The amusement of watching Govinda's cinematic rebirth in the form of Varun Dhawan is delightful to the core. Unpretentious and hunky dory, it is a regular David Dhawan fare that is slapstick, silly and yet a consistent and coherent entertainer.

Seenu (Varun Dhawan) is a bothersome sweet innocent looking kid who is at core a harami. A back bencher in college, he decides to take life in his own hands when he fails in his exams. Intending to finish his college in Bangalore, Seenu shifts from Coonor to the big city.

On the first day at college, he meets Sunaina (Ileana D'Cruz) and develops a fascination for her. But Sunaina is forbidden fruit as she is already betrothed to Angad Negi (Arunoday Singh). After much persuasion, Seenu and Sunaina fall in love but Sunaina ends up getting kidnapped.

It turns out that a famous Gangsters daughter Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) too has fallen deeply for Seenu. It's a tough call for Seenu as he must choose between the two gorgeous damsels. Main Tera Hero is the story of Seenu becoming the Hero of one of these women. Who will it be?

Main Tera Hero Review: Script Analysis

It is unabashedly a paper thin plotline but David Dhawan's enthusiasm makes it a winning story. Luckily the bountifully talented Milap Zaveri hasn't dissipated his energy and words too much in slapping on our faces vulgar jokes ala Grand Masti style. On the contrary, the guy has weaved a story that doesn't expect much intelligence from the audiences and is still high on humor quotient that will keep you laughing all through with merry gags. One would have expected the tried and tested formula to fall flat, but it surprisingly doesn't. Rather it works. The humor that is outright lame has a mesmeric degree of simplicity in it that makes you realize the value of commercial cinema altogether.

Right out of the 90s, the film has a conspicuous enjoyable factor to it. It is not much about the milieu and the plot as much as it is about the dialogues. Every line is a gem and Zaveri hits all the correct notches of humor, keeping the laughs quick and incessant. Even though we are in an age where cinema is meant to be a reinvigorating experience of sorts, I can somehow summon the patience to watch arm candies falling on a hot man. It isn't an easy patience but it comes from the innocent storytelling of Dhawan.

The script is replete with uproarious sequences. Be it Seenu's conversations with God or the Bholenath Bhajan piece, they are all individual hits of sorts. The irreverent banter Seenu engages in is thoroughly enjoyable. Obviously the jokes aren't exactly politically correct ones, but if you are having a hard day and want to shed your inhibitions altogether, Zaveri manages to pack up so many jokes that you won't really get enough.

Probably the only hitch with scripts of this order is that the second half often gets sluggish. The same happens in this story as well as the love triangle swiftly converting into a quadrangle but somehow the director tackles the weaknesses smartly in the garb of pulsating music and Varun Dhawan comic timing distracts us from nitpicking for good obviously.

Main Tera Hero Review: Star Performances

Varun Dhawan is effortlessly charming. He is so awesome on screen that you'll find it a task to take your eyes off him. He is an amalgamation of the best attributes of Govinda and Salman Khan, mostly the faultless expression and the impeccable comic timing. Barely two films old, this guy is already a superstar in making and what a fascinating one at that.

Ileana D'Cruz was a painful distraction. Not a flattering actress but quite a faulty one at it, probably Varun found it easier to win due to the lack of caliber on her part. Her chemistry with Varun wasn't exactly something to boast of either. David Dhawan's actress like Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon were known for their zest and D'Cruz didn't quite match up their level.

If Ileana was wasted, Nargis Fakhri was meted out with a role extremely futile. She fails to make an impression at all. Not exactly a woman known for her acting skills, this film doesn't help her cause in Bollywood too much. A pretty glamdoll and none more.

Arunoday Singh is hot and his good looks comes handy in selling his minuscule role in the film. He is clearly an actor of immense potential and should be given a chance to do better and meatier roles.

Anupam Kher delivers one of his funniest bets from recent times. After having himself wasted in rubbish affairs like Gang of Ghosts, he is vibrant in this film.

Main Tera Hero Review: Direction, Editing and Screenplay

Only David Dhawan can manage to make a film so low on IQ palatable to all and with such energy and enthusiasm. Even after decades in the industry, Dhawan Senior may have aged in years but remains the same simple guy when it comes to his craft which makes his films so winsome. Clearly there is something timeless in his films and that is the enchanting skill of turning plain stories into engrossing films. Though his screenplay this time is very biased towards his son, but it is definitely more of a tribute of Govinda whom you can't help but miss. Varun, thanks to his dad, is halfway on his path to achieving Govinda's charisma. If one manages to look carefully, the film is quite a bold affair from David Dhawan who has risked many changes in his usual concoction of entertainment.

Luckily, he doesn't hit wrong notes. If Chashme Baddoor was enjoyable, Main Tera Hero is eons better. Dialogues like Main Jabse Pampers Mein Thi Dad Ne Mujhe Tabse Pamper Kiya Hai and the Ghanti and Ghanta Jokes are more laughable than distasteful. The tight editing and chartbuster music all adds in making this film an enjoyable watch.

Main Tera Hero Review: The Last Word

Main Tero Hero transports you into a world of fun that we have been kept devoid of from weeks. Quick witted, jocular and pricelessly silly, this film is a sure shot must watch. Leading constantly somber lives extracts the vibrancy out of us and after a long time here's a film that will rescue you from the regular pains by offering 120 minutes flat of persistent guffawing. Varun Dhawan's Govinda act is one rollicking show. I am going with a 3/5 and recommend that you definitely watch abandon all your troubles and have a blast at the movies this well. Thumbs up!
