Film Review: Main Tera Hero'

Varun Dhawan gets full marks for carrying a comedy with a questionable plot till the finish line

Move over Salman Khan, it's time to make way for Main Tera Hero star Varun Dhawan: a star pupil who seems to have graduated from your school of acting (or non-acting).

The 26-year-old does everything in his power to win over hearts and he succeeds. Just like bhai (as Khan is fondly called in Bollywood), Dhawan displays incredible pecs-bouncing ability and makes juggling between two hot women seem like a good idea. But in Main Tera Hero, he had me at Katrina Kaif and his swipe at her faulty Hindi. The jokes roll easy in the first half as we get to know Ooty's answer to Dennis, the menace: Seenu (Dhawan).

He's not the brightest bulb in his class but what he lacks in intellect, the overgrown prankster overcompensates with wit and charm. The first half is designed to display Dhawan Jr as the ultimate Bollywood hero material. The son of director David Dhawan proves that he can dance, sing, woo women, bash up baddies and have inane conversations with God " and make it all seem normal.

This is a comedy that pays ode to men who remain boys. He joins the fictional TIFTS college in Bengaluru and it's no TUFTS University " the academic haven near Boston. Here, the students look as if they learnt to dance shirtless before they learnt how to spell. Seenu's conversation with his indulgent mother while at college which goes something like: "Ma, even if I don't bring a degree home, I will make sure that I bring a wife home," underlines the theme of this film.

On his first day of college, his eyes fall upon Sunaina (incredibly slender Ileana D'Cruz). And instead of finding his classroom, he digs up her history. She's engaged to a beefy, evil cop Angad who is immune to anger management lessons. What happens in the next one hour is a tug of wills among the impish Seenu, the helpless waif, Sunaina, and her bullish boyfriend Angad.

While the first half is amusing, the second half gets sluggish in the last 20 minutes. At some point, the love triangle becomes a quadrangle with a voluptuous Nargis Fakhri entering the frame. Actor Anupam Kher, who plays Fakhri's dad, is in top form as a dim-witted gangster, while the women take the term eye candies' to a fabulous level. Their bronzed, sculpted bodies in bikinis are welcome distractions when you find yourself looking for a story in this film.

But full marks to Dhawan for carrying a comedy with a questionable plot till the finish line. He lays on the charm thick and nice. And if that didn't seem to work, he just took off his shirt.

Watch this if you like films that don't challenge you to think.

Main Tera Hero movie review: Mindless but still entertaining

Main Tera Hero movie review: Mindless but still entertaining
FONT SIZE
Main Tera Hero' is energetically light-heart entertainment, even with the old formulaic masalas in it.

Stars- Varun Dhawan, Ileana D' Cruz, Nargis Fakhri, Arunoday Singh, Anupam Kher
Director- David Dhawan
Music Director- Sajid-Wajid

David Dhawan, who is known for his humourous flicks is back to give some doze of it again and this time he gets a perfect replacement of Govinda in form of his very own son Varun Dhawan.

It has been quite a while, since we have witnessed a humourous drama in cinema, if we ignore the unintentional humour presented in recent serious dramas. For good, David Dhawan's Main Tera Hero' is not like his last disaster Do Knot disturb and to some extent his semi-cooked Chashme Baddoor'.

The story revolves around Sheenu (Vaun Dhawan) the notorious man in Ooty and a drop out from his college. In order to pursue his education he takes admission in a Bangalore college. Here he falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D' Cruz). But Sunaina is forced to marry Angad (Arunoday Singh), a local gangster.

On the other hand, Sheenu has another die-hard lover in form of Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) whom he saved from goons by bashing them up in a train from Ooty to Bangalore. Ayesha's father (Anupam Kher) kidnaps Sunaina to get hold of Sheenu for his daughter. Now how Varun gets screwed up in this love triangle and how he strikes back, this quiz with twists and turns holds you throughout the 128 minutes runtime.

David Dhawan, foremost capitalises over the energy of his son who gives his 200 percent in this flick, which despite carrying an old formula doesn't allow it's viewers to feel outdated and bored.

The tried and tested formula has been given a new dimension with a good screenplay and some one-liners, which are sure to be popular among the masses.

You won't get any extraordinary appeal in the flick, which has mostly unoriginal chain of events. The kidnappers and the goons turning into comic characters have been widely witnessed in earlier masala movies and once again you come across them.

David Dhawan keeps both action and comedy in proportion and lets his artists capitalise over it.

Varun carries the entire drama on his shoulders and undoubtedly he is a package of talent and energy. His lively act and fun dialogue delivery livens up the screen. His dance encourages you to join him at every step.

Ileana D' Cruz is great in her act. Nargis Fakhri adds some oomph in the show along with some good acting.

Arunoday Singh, tries to be comical villain but struggles at times. Anupam Kher as another big goon is good.

Music by Sajid-Wajid is brilliant. Most of his foot-tapping tracks like Saari night Besharmi ki height' and Palat' are good as well as nicely choreographed.

Main Tera Hero' is energetically light-heart entertainment, even with the old formulaic masalas in it.

Main Tera Hero: Typical David Dhawan style movie

Film: Main Tera Hero

Director: David Dhawan

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'cruz, Nargis Fakhri, Arunoday Singh, Anupam Kher,

Story Line: Main Tera Hero is a story of a mischievous, clever guy Shrinath Prasad fondly called as Shinu( Varun Dhawan), who studies in Bangalore. Getting bored of his college life, Shinu goes to Ooty to unwind himself, where he falls in love with Sunaina (Ileana D'cruz).

How can a love story be complete without a villain! So here walks in Angad (Arunoday Singh) the corrupt cop, who wants to forcibly marry Sunaina. Angad is also a friend of gangster Vikrant (Anupam Kher), whose daughter Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) falls in love with Shinu. Now, what Shinu does to get out of this situation, develops rest of the story.

Movie Review: If you try to find something new in this movie, don't waste your time as it is a typical David Dhawan style film. Like every Dhawan movie, Main Tera Hero is also a comedy one. Most of the scenes of this movie are reminiscent of previous Dhawan flicks despite new actors.

You may see a glimpse of Salman, Anil and Govinda, who had been part of David Dhavan films, Varun Dhawan's acting. If you expect Main Tera Hero' to be a rib-tickling watch, you will be highly disappointed.

FIRST REVIEW of Main Tera Hero.masala.com

star cast: Varun Dhawan, Ileana D'Cruuz, Nargis Fakhri and Anupam Kher

Director: David Dhawan

Rating: 2 stars

The cute boy likes the cute girl who is liked by the stud boy. But cute girl doesn't like him. Who? Cute boy or stud boy? Stud boy, yaar!! Stud boy is the dada type, threatens everyone and wouldn't let anyone come close to her. Her who? Cute girl, yaar!! But stud boy lets cute boy snare cute girl. Arrey, but you just said stud boy is dada type? Oh ho!! It's a fun challenge, yaar, and, moreover, it's a David Dhawan film, so don't ask too many questions. So cute boy floors cute girl. But hot girl in Hong Kong loves cute boy too. What?? You never said there was a hot girl too? And how can she love him from a different city?David Dhawan film, bro. Calm down. There's more. So everyone goes to Hong Kong to meet the hot girl. But shouldn't the hot girl have come to India instead of three people flying to a foreign land? Foreign locations, dude! Ekta Aunty Kapoor has a lot of money. After a couple of daredevil stunts and item numbers and colorful clothes on display, cute boy gets hot girl. No, cute boy gets stud boy; no, no, no, that will be so wrong. Wait. Give me a sec. Errr, cute boy gets cute girl! Pause. At least I think so!

Confession: I kept my The Lunchbox sensibilities aside and went to watch Main Tera Hero, wearing my David Dhawan glasses, all ready to enjoy the ride and not intellectually mess with it. But a film that starts with a failed student getting admission in a college, where a girl is forced to date a policeman at gun point, who in turn lets the college guy date his love interest for three days... I knew I had no hope in hell of being lenient with the film.

From Aye, mujhe pappi de na to Give me a kiss; from village bells to urban bombshells; from Sarkaye lo khatiya to Besharmi ki height, David Dhawan, the director has come a long way. His masala sensibilities are now beautifully dressed in bright designer clothes, Rohit Shetty- type of action. But these are just embellishments that fail to make a good movie. He is consistent in one department though - lack of a strong storyline. Main Tera Hero is no exception. Refer to para number one!

Subtlety and realism in a David-directed, Ekta-produced film are like T-Rex, extinct! And to expect these two dinosaurs is your mistake, not the makers.

The good thing about the movie is Varun-papa-I-lou-you-papa-Dhawan. There are actors and there are stars. He is a star, full hero material. He is in good shape, looks good, dances like a dream and comfortably romances the camera like a pro. He is a happy mix of Salman Khan and Govinda. His coming timing in the film is good and he plays Shinu with both ease and endearment! He won't have awards at the end of the year but will have his posters adorning the walls of young hormone-driven school and college girls!

Ileana-BAAARPPPYYY-D'Cruz plays Sunaina. Though a good actor, the lacklustre character of Sunaina doesn't leave Ileana much of a chance to prove anything. Nargis-Katrina-Kaif-part-2-Fakhri looks as hot as ever!

The music by Sajid Wajid is catchy. You will find yourself singing Palat and Besharmi ki height at the end of the film. The dialogues by Milap Milan Zaveri are funny sometimes but mostly forced. Sample this...

*Haath mein hockey, pant (not pants) mein Jockey, aise chauki (pause) daar ki tarah kyun khade ho!?

*Muah ke baad ab aapko dua ki zaroorat hain!

If you can, like most filmmakers would say, leave behind your brains watch Main Tera Hero or else keep it for a lazy Friday DVD watch.
