Did critics and we( the audience) watch the same movie? How can they not understand the movie? Or say things like Veera got friendly with her kidnappers to quickly, I mean she was breaking her shell which had been there for atleast 10-12 years (since she was 9). Some critics have complained about second-half being slow and depressing. I thought it was liberating than depressing. I am so disappointed to read reviews of this movie by critics. Movies like these rely on word of mouth and if critics are not going to be enthusiastic about it who is going to watch it. I haven't met anyone who hasn't liked this movie. I hope it picks up and if not hit atleast turn out to be an average grosser😭

Exactly!😕 How can critics like Anupama and Masand (I almost, always agree with their reviews) trash Highway so badly? I was so confounded after watching the film...cause I had read their reviews and I was like, am I watching the same movie that those guys also saw?😕
This is one of those films which uplifts your spirit despite its tragic ending...just like Rang De Basanti Did (to give one example) or more lately like Lootera did. From no angle was it a depressing film...in fact, it was so witty and hilarious in parts and so heartwarming.
The film is based partly on Stockholm's Sydrome where the victim bonds with their abductor...I don't think there is a need to moralize that fact...rather focus on what the film tries to say about breaking free of our shackles and moving forward in life.
I personally thought that the social message behind the film was fantastically told...it really did drive the point home. That bad things can happen to anyone, anywhere...and wealth or the lack of it cannot prevent that. And similarly, good and bad people exist everywhere, irrespective of class barriers.
I am going to watch it again tomorrow...I want to see this film in the theatre once more before it goes away. Totally worth every penny spent!

^^ I agree with everything you said, Poppy.
I will watch it this week again. I am also convincing all my friends to watch it. Everyone I know loved the film. However, I have a feeling that it appealed to women a lot more, because we can relate to Veera and her journey more. Anupama's reviews are rarely good. I never trust them. Telegraph Kolkata had a great review, and completely true.

I loved Rangan's review...for one, he is the ONLY reviewer who analyzes a film, rather than just write about it and plus, he has a true love and passion for films, which is why his reviews make such an interesting read...I loved those things he said about Highway and Hooda in his review!
PS: Totally fangirling after Randeep😳...hunting for Jism 2's DVD now!😆

I am totally wondering too, why Veera opening up to her kidnappers is such a huge flaw as per the critics😕

the minute she was allowed to run away by her kidnappers and then guided by the divine light (tu kuja and that scene lit up by stars had such a divine feel to it...like a better depiction of the kun faya kun moment of ranbir in rockstar) and her own instinct...she knew almost from within that she was safer with these guys than in her own house...like a sign that from hereon, if she trusts them and they trust her, she will embark on a journey she always wanted to...haha that moment when she comes back and Mahabir asks others to let her go back on her own had such an inexplicable feel to it..😛
n totally loling at anupama's review🥱 I mean she gave gunday 3 stars😕 and highway is an average movie for her??😕🤢
OK seriously when m I going to get over this movie😡😆

^^ Actually, Tripti said a beautiful thing last night, when we were discussing how this movie is not for everyone.
She said, you have to be in certain position in life, in a certain state of mind- to really grasp the true essence of the film. It's not about intelligence at all. It's more about the emotional and mental position you are in. This is why people who liked it, absolutely loved it, and cannot get it out of their mind.
Imtiaz's JWM was more of a massy-class entertainer. But Rockstar onwards, he has truly started exploring the kind of movie he wants to make. The kind of movie which is beyond cinema, which is an experience. You need to understand his themes, his idea of freedom, of journey, of growth to really appreciate the film.

@stargirl - I do agree with that to an extent - u have to be mentally prepared for something of this sort - but just going by personal experience - some of my friends who are totally into massy entertainment and went to watch highway totally unprepared andwith super low expectations...ended up coming out being in awe of it...something moved them from within...if it could move the general audience too...then I dont get why critics who watch a movie for those unsaid minute details, couldnt grasp the essence...

+++++++++++++++++++++++
Personally I felt rockstar had a weak base and tons of loopholes - I never connected to Jordan's angst properly - Ranbir was smashing in the movie...but the layout... the progression was abrupt - maybe a better female lead would have salvaged it for me, since Nargis as Heer was possibly the worst miscast sofar
Highway was a far far better and refined version of a journey of two characters IMO

i felt it was more like she found a friend/confidant/father /guardian figure in her life because she grossly lacked one all her life...like the man who abuses her was MEANT to be a father figure to her but she obviously despises him and yet still had to be nice to him throughout her llife, she dosent feel very close to her father because she dosent confide her truth to him...when she does confide to her mom, the mom brushes it under the carpet...so i really think the fact tht she confided to mahabir and felt more "protected" with him was because he was kinda like the family/guardian she never had...

i actually never thought their chemistry was ever "romantic" ...

No, it wasn't. And that's the beauty of the movie - It is a Love story without being a "Love story."

It was the peace, the solitude & the immediate & natural sense of belonging that these 2 human bengs share who ideally, seeing where each come from, should never share.

And yet, THEY DO. THEY SHINE when they're together. They're blissful, peaceful when they're with each other.

It went beyond Love.

For Veera, he was the one she was searching for. The one who never left her, who never used her ( compare it to her very rich, obviously upper-class fiance) who when she was kidnapped can only scaredly grumble, "kahan thaa naa Maine." And rev up his posh Audi & escape.

And to Mahabir. Who despite all his serious hatred for the Upper-Class that he realises very soon, that she represents, never takes advantage of her. He loathes, abhors her.. Yet he never touches her.

Even when she was molested by ONE OF HIM, he doesn't stand by & watch it, he slaps Adoo.

I feel that for him, then he wouldn't be better than the Bade Log who exploited his mother.

Hence, the constant "Kothe pe bithaa denge, saali ko."
