It will obviously not work that way. What a shame.
It's sad how terrible movies like Gunday, Jai Ho release in such large scale, and this movie is stuck to 800 screens.

It's sad but nonetheless a sensible decision..at this point of time where the 'critics' of the country can't appreciate the uniqueness of the movie, releasing it in 300 halls with 2-3 as the audience would have served no purpose..
Not judging the intelligence of the audience(I'm amongst the slowest out here) but just the sort of movies they have a palette for is quite obvious! In such a situation Imtiaz would have incurred huger losses

Usernameloading😊 woah the concept of indirect responsibility of murder/ suicide - makes a lot of sense
stargirl - concur, it could be just one zamindar exploiting his mother again and again...

++++++++++++++++++++
Veera-Mahabir connection/ bond was already beyond the physical attraction - I suppose they both never wanted that phase between them...maybe due to the fact that they both faced/ saw the consequences of physical atrocities...so when Mahabir seemed to be already dead...it was that first layer in him as a human being, where he could feel, look, enjoy the world like a normal person...that normalcy was dead...so was the case with Veera...she hated the material aspects...they both had transcended above the physical needs per..se..

both of them somewhere with each others support proceeded towards some kind of divine realism...they had a platonic relationship established...Mahabir probably trying to rid himself of the guilt and Veera coming to terms with just being herself

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
One particular review I read was seriously so shallow😕 the critic couldnt apparently buy the story or something😕 I wish they would understand that this movie wasnt a definite story, but a journey of a characters...of emerging out from nowhere in their respective lives...and more so a thought provoking one leading the viewers into their own pysche - such movies are rarely made⭐️

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Oh boy the last time I was so intrigued by a movie and into dissection post viewing was inception 😆

Highway Weekend Business
2014-02-24 00:56:420Boxoffice
Highway fared very low at the domestic market in its Opening Weekend. Movie has collected 12.5cr approx over its Opening Weekend which is much lower than the expectations. Movie saw upward trend over the Weekend with Saturday growing 25-30% while Sunday showing around 20% growth.

Movie has been huge disappointment as it had same release and buzz like Hasee Toh Phasee but numbers are much lower i.e. 25% than of Hasee Toh Phasee.. Movies best grossing places were same that of Hasee Toh Phasee i.e. Dehli City and East Punjab. Movie is looking to fare poor at lifetime window. Below is the daily breakdown for weekend.

Friday.. 3.15cr

Saturday.. 4.15cr

Sunday.. 5.2cr

Total.. 12.5cr

My Review of Highway

Imtiaz Ali has a mastery in creative film making and he has reached a different level entirely with Highway.Its his experiment with cinema by creating a movie thats a mixture of a documentay, addresses the grim realities of life and to create a cinema dissimilar from his contemporaries.He succeeds in doing so to a great extent.The fakeness of modern High society and the likeablity of the small town people is flawlessly depicted.The movie touches very sensitive issues prevalent in Indian society with emotions and truth.The fact that he envisioned something like Highway is a reinforcement of his belief in this craft.The Maturity and sentiment with which this movie is treated can only be expected from somebody of the stature of Imtiaz Ali.

The cinematography of this movie wins you over.The angles at which India's geographic beauty is captured is praise-worthy and has the touch of a great artist.Kudos to Anil Mehta for so beautifully capturing of my Kashmir 👏At times it feels as if you are watching a National Geographic documentary on North India.

Star-Cast:

Alia has been given a role of lifetime and she shines like a diamond here,i didnt one second realize i was watching Alia Bhaat she was Veera.i have mocked her after SOTY but she won me in this one,i would even go further to claim she is after Vidya/PC the best mainstream actress today.

Randeep Hooda-He is one of the finest and least recognized actors of our film industry.Only Imtiaz could have identified the inert talent and rawness in him, which was a must for Mahabir's character.

The rest of the star-cast was great and hand-picked.The actor who played Addoo's role was pleasing and sympathetic.The actor who played Gaurav's role showed the opportunist and lechecrous side of the kidnapper's clan effectively.

Music:

As the movie is, so is its soundtrack-"Different".This is not a regular item number/disco tracks/song-dance routine flick.The background tracks and the music is scintillating.The product by another maestro can be nothing less than brilliant anyway:).Mahi Ve, Patakha Guddi and maa ki lori take the movie to higher levels of excellence.

My favorite scenes

1-The scene in which Veera dances to english track and then Addoo starts moving a leg or two in typical north indian style.Hilarious.Attention paid to the minutest details.

2-The scene in which Mahabir asks Veera to go to the police station and go back and she disagrees, forcefully asking him to take her along with him.The chandigarh bus stop scene in succession.

3-The Mountain house scene in which Mahabir remembers his mother and the peace and comfort he and Veera share.

4-Veera's confrontation with her family and outburst at her uncle's misdeeds.

5 Mahabir hugging Veera for the first time

Imtiaz Ali is god gift to Indian Cinema that is all i have to say.

5/5

does anyone else feel that the bond between mahabir and veera was NOT romantic? i never felt it was romantic or "love story" types when i saw the film...
i felt it was more like she found a friend/confidant/father /guardian figure in her life because she grossly lacked one all her life...like the man who abuses her was MEANT to be a father figure to her but she obviously despises him and yet still had to be nice to him throughout her llife, she dosent feel very close to her father because she dosent confide her truth to him...when she does confide to her mom, the mom brushes it under the carpet...so i really think the fact tht she confided to mahabir and felt more "protected" with him was because he was kinda like the family/guardian she never had...

i actually never thought their chemistry was ever "romantic" ...

Is this a scene from the film or were the guards kept for the security of Alia and Randeep?😕
When I saw the on location pics of Kashmir, I actually thought the blood stained pics were shots of a terrorist attack on Veera-Mahabir

This scene was amazing! The gunshots happened all of a sudden and then Veera screaming "Mahabir!"- heartbreaking! Also, when she tries to explain to her parents the situation is not what it looks like was so sad because not a soul there understood her!

I really feel like watching the movie again!

BTW, this was the first movie I watched of Randeep Hooda. And boy do I want to see more of him in the future! As for now, are there any of his previous movies that you all would suggest as a must watch?

My review
I thought the movie was ok, imtiaz made the movie well however the story did not wow me.

A r rahmans music went very well with the story, it added the right emotion to the scenes

The cinematography was very nice and visually they did a good job, however there were moments in the movie where I just kept asking myself 'ok this is sudden'

Like how a girl like veera falls in love with a guy like mahabir, I mean he kidnapped her, I know he isn't a totally bad person but even with the bad experience veera went through in her childhood it still didn't make sense to me that she was leave everything to set up house with him.
Also in the scene with her outburst about her uncle, her family doesn't care about her at all that when she decides to leave they let her? There was no confrontation with the uncle, no fighting for their daughter to stay?

I don't know the story didn't really flow as well as I hoped it wud.

The travelling scenes were also too long and I agree with faridoon that you need to give the film patience to watch it.

Alia did well, baring in mind its only her second movie, she has improved alot, however there is still stuff she can improve on
Randeep played his character very well, the quiet brooding guy with secrets.

For me it's a one time watch, a film with good performances but not enough story to keep me completely interested.

Correct me if someone has mentioned this;
The scene where Veera and Mahabir are in Spiti and she is staring at the mountains and strikes a conversation with him on mountains, whimsically wondering how it would feel to actually go upto them...and Mahabir, pauses for a moment (that is his character...he thinks before reacting unlike Veera who reacts and then ponders on what she has done or said) simply says, 'Chal'! Veera's look of joy and amusement on the fact that he is actually taking her there and Mahabir's saradonic response to her enthusiasm!😆
I thought it was one of the sweetest scenes in the movie...so typically Veera and Mahabir...she makes a childish demand and he agrees without questioning. Nothing romantic...yet so profound and poignant. A beautiful way of showing the characters progression in the story and how they have come to understand and trust each other.
It would be a tragedy if the film doesn't make money...Immy would go back to making candy floss romance instead of films that he is actually capable of making!
PS: Some of Alia's best moments in the film are when she is shown all by herself...staring vacantly at the space ahead...her face was like a Canvas with a myraid variety of colors filling it! What a discovery Imtiaz has made with Highway...I don't think it would even have passed Karan Johar's mind that his favorite protegee actually had it in her to enact such a role.
PPS: Smarie, I agree...the relationship between Mahabir and Veera had more of a Guardian/Ward kind of feel than anything remotely romantic...especially from Mahabir's side. Yet, for me, Highway felt like one of the best love stories that has come out of bollywood in quite a long while.
