30+ is OK for heroines. I think BW lacks good scripts for middleaged woman. Cate Blanchett did Blue Jasmine for example and she will win the oscar. Meryl Streep has been doing amazing roles even at this age but no such films for Bollywood heroines in their 40s or 50s. You can't do typical romantic roles at that age. Also credit goes to lead actors when Aamir can pull off the role of a college student at this age and make it the biggest hit like he did with 3 Idiots.

Actually, it is us the audience that is responsible for the attitude taken by most actors, directors and producers. Most audiencelose interest in actressesonce they are married because we do not want to see them do roles that the unmarried actresses are doing. Not many would want to see a married actress do Katrina's strip tease from Dhoom3. Yet if Katrina were married, it would not make the scene many less sexy than now. Just double standards there.

Even though we have moved strides in technology and science and what not, it is still a patriarchal society in India. Men do not want to see the main and lead actor romance an actress who is married in real life, it is like she is now out of bounds. Listen to Salman's chauvinistic attitude of the actress being some-one's wife. That is the first hurdle that most married actresses face.

The second is that Indian actresses seem to take time off when pregnant, whereas most other places, it is either worked into the script or worked around it. Also, how often do we see our married actresses pregnant and flaunting a belly on the cover of a magazine or on the beach. This break seems to effectively, if unfairly, put a complete brake on the actresses career.

Simply, most of the audience does not accept that a married heroine can be just as or even more effective in movies than the single heroines. We may all talk the talk of them retaining their talent, beauty, sexiness and figures, but how many walk the talk and shell out the greens at the movie theatre, examples, Juhi, Madhuri and Karisma?

There is also the fact thatwe immediately slate them into "aunty" slots ourselves and make fun of the weight that they pick up during pregnancy without even considering their individual health issues. As women fans and audience, we ourselves are very unforgiving to the actresses - imagine the grit and determination that that it took Aishwariya for her get back into public after the lambasting and insultingfor retaining pregnancy weight? We do it on public platforms of letters to magazines, papers and on various internet websites, surely big andhighly successfulproduction houses have a PR department with employees that look at things like this specifically.

The sad thing is that we as women deliberately and sometimes viciouslysabotage the chances of these actresses ourselves by denigrating them.

THANK YOU!
Couldn't have said it better..like seriously if Kareena and Aish are aunties, then Salman and SRK should be uncles no?

Also watch, in 2-3 years when Deepika and Kat turn 30, the "aunty" tag will come for them too

Apparently once you hit 30, it's like ur 95+ years old and your life is almost over 🤣

As if we won't ever age ourselves? aging is natural and beautiful.

After Shahid had a couple of flops, a lot of people said his career is over. It wasn't because of his age but because of the choices he made and the way the audience rejected his movies. The same is going on for Kareena. She has had enough good offers but she gave them out on a platter and chose to do the silly movies because they were easier roles and didn't require much time or effort. You sow as you reap. She did shit and is getting shit in return. Why cry now?
Marriage and age matter but not as much. I mean Vidya is still doing well for herself because she does the right kind of movies.
Actresses usually start working in their late teens .. some even start by 15-16 years of age and then they continue working until their early to mid thirties.
Actors start late, some even at 30. If they continue to work until 50 or a little later than that then what is the big deal?
Actresses are busy showing off their youth instead of concentrating on good cinema or doing meaningful movies. They build a certain kind of fans/audience which starts loving them. When the youth goes, what is that audience left with? nothing. Hence, they move on too.
Actresses like Nandita Das, Vidya Balan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Kangana .. they do good movies and hence, audience only expect good acting/movies from them. As long as they deliver that, the fans/audience will be there. Now good acting is not like youth, it doesn't just passes by. It improves with time.
So the actors who work harder and take up challenging roles, improve with time, they only get better with age and hence, they continue to get their kind of work. This is the simple rule - your investment dooms or grows depending on what you invested in. If you invest in something frivolous, sooner or later it will wash out. If you invest in something substantial, then obviously it will give you good returns over a longer period of time.

Well, this is true, it happens so. Actresses have to face discrimination in everything in BW, and honestly HW too. That has to do more about the attitude towards women in general...Come on... We are Indians, one of the most screwed up people in every issue, race, caste, gender...in everything. So no option, but deal with it.
And coming on the topic, women are mostly a flower pot in movies, being a flower pot, it entirely depends on your looks and nothing more. So, while wrinkles or age signs will never stop an actor to do a movie, with actress its just looks what matter mostly. Plus, marital status does make a difference...as i said, mentality.
Solution...a long way to go. When everyone will be educated, people will develop sensibilities, and will learn to use grey matter...situations will change.

Thanks everyone for these replies. I agree audience is too harsh on actresses. I hope one day this changes. Anyways I am proud of vidya and kareena because these two actress are in their almost mid 30s and still maintained their career. Vidya never did a movie opposite khan but yet she is among one of the top Heriones and kareena has maintained her career for longest time.
Honestly kareena needs one good movie like jab we met and she will be back with a bang. Hope she will now chose good scripts

Bollywood audience is terrible to older actresses or actresses in general. Kareena's career could take a turn for the worse depending on what she chooses to do in the future but I hope it's not over. All she needs is a big hit and she will be back in the game. It doesn't take a lot to change these things Bollywood. When Jab we met came out Kareena was considered queen bee, then Priyanka and now Deepika. Next year it will change again. Salman was the flop king now he is the hit king. Shahid was considered one of the best after kaminey and people forgot about that in two seconds and moved on to Ranbir. And now it is all about Ranveer.
So I hope Kareena makes a comeback.

About Vidya... I'm absolutely proud fan of hers. That lady deserves all the applaud. It's more because that she herself is unique... She made her career on her acting talent not on beauty. Despite harsh and harsher criticism of her weight, dresses, this and that, and rather than changing herself through surgery, or weight loss, she remained what she is. Besides, she is amazingly intelligent, offscreen too, she's perfect. No dumb comments, good sense of humor, her honesty and boldness is remarkable. And no matter what, I still bet she wont be treated this way, because earlier as I said, women need to look in a certain way because they act as a decorative piece, however she is signed in movies for acting potential, and she'll always do that.

The perception towards a married actress is different when compared to unmarried ones..I personally don't like married actress romancing onscreen...May be that is in our Indian culture we have grown with..

Indian Culture...!! Do we follow everything which is in Indian culture? Like getting indulged in group sex with hell strange and weird positions...? or burning women because their pati parmeshwar decided to go to upar wala parmeshwar. Seriously...!! I bet Cinema deteriorates many more "indian" conventions. Why watch any movies?
