Movie Review: Hasee Toh Phasee

Faheem Ruhani Mumbai, February 6, 2014 | UPDATED 20:43 IST

Director: Vinil Mathew
Cast: Parineeti Chopra, Siddharth Malhotra, Sharat Saxena, Neena Kulkarni, Adah Sharma and others
Rating: 4 Star Rating: Recommended4 Star Rating: Recommended4 Star Rating: Recommended

Siddharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra in Hasee Toh Phasee.

Boy (Nikhil-Siddharth Malhotra) meets girl (Meeta-Parineeti Chopra) very briefly. They meet again after seven years. This time the boy is about to get married to another girl in the next seven days. To make matters complicated you find that he is about to get married to the girl's younger sister (Mitali-Adah Sharma). No prizes for guessing that the boy will finally get married to the girl he first met seven years ago. The fun and the most interesting part of the film lies in discovering how the boy and girl are thrown into situations, forcing them to grow close to each other.

A huge chunk of debutant director Vinil Mathew's Hasee Toh Phasee (HTP) takes you through this woh saat din romcom in a refreshing way even though it all happens in the backdrop of a predictable, big fat Indian wedding with uncles, aunts and cousins, adding dollops of colour, fun and madness to it.

HTP is laced with hilarious situations and there are many laugh out loud moments which keep you entertained throughout this over two-hour-twenty-one minutes long film. It threatens to get slightly melodramatic in the second half but quickly saves itself from a deja vu pit. Both Nikhil and Meeta's characters are well-etched out. He is a good-for nothing but practical gent who will do anything to please his fiancee and she is a chemical engineer who will rob her own family to fund her research in China.

The well-written film is breezy, funny, witty, a fast-paced story, packed with crackling dialogue. Parineeti Chopra's performance is the best of the lot. She sparkles and dazzles with natural ease and makes you feel for her when she pops all those anti-depressant drugs. After his first film Student of The Year, Siddharth Malhotra, climbs up several notches, proving that he is more than just a pretty boy. You may want to take him a little more seriously as an actor post HTP and even the awkwardness that he displayed while dancing in his first film has disappeared. Proof: See him groove to Shake it like Shammi.

After his recent stellar performance in Club 60, Sharat Saxena once again manages to shine in a brief but well-played out role. The rest of the supporting cast lend able support and are a delight to watch their individual peculiarities. Adah Sharma succeeds in getting on your nerves, playing the control freak fiancee. Vishal-Shekhar's music is peppy and enjoyable.

Hasee Toh Phasee could be your best bet at cinemas this week.

*sigh* romcoms with a desi flavor like BBB and SDR works better nowadays

GTPM was a disaster when pitted against Ramleela else it wud've done fine

HTP should be an avg atleast or else it wud be painful

Film: Hasee Toh Phasee

Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra

Director: Vinil Mathew

Rating: ****

What it is about:

While Nikhil (Sidharth Malhotra) is engaged to his fiancee (Adah), he meets her sister, the goofy scientist Meeta (Parineeti Chopra); and soon sparks fly between the two confusing souls.

What's good:

Hasee toh Phasee is an exhilarating rom-com. The film is wryly funny, compassionate, has a combination of fabulous performances, pitch-perfect script and deft direction.

Filmmaker Vinil Mathew is ideally suited to bring to life the nuanced screenplay. The debutant director tells a refreshing romantic tale, a far cry from your typical Bollywood rom-com. And the fact that he does it with subtlety, humour and touches an emotional chord, marks Vinil as a filmmaker to watch out for.

The rom-com covers old ground with disarming freshness; Vinil's lyrical, soulful projection of relationships cuts to the heart and leaves a mark behind.

In detailing the relationship between Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra, the film sweeps you up on waves of humour, heartbreak and ravishing romance. Sidharth and Parineeti give performances of unparalleled intimacy.

Parineeti is a ball of fire in a breakthrough performance of startling power. This is one actress who gets better and better in each of her outings. Parineeti and Sidharth's chemistry is strikingly convincing. Parineeti is wondrously natural, perhaps even better than any of her previous superb performances. She plays a well-rounded, non-stereotypical character which suits the script.

Sidharth too shows his growth as an actor in his second film after Student Of The Year. Sidharth's natural portrayal of Nikhil makes you believe in him. He holds his own next to the zany avatar of Parineeti. A special shout out to Manoj Joshi, who played the role of Parineeti's dad with much precision.

The film's music goes with the flow, with Zehnaseeb and Punjabi Wedding songs standing out.

Even with all the drama within Hasee Toh Phasee, it is an uplifting film in the end, a film about love - real love!

What to do:

A refreshing rom-com, Hasee Toh Phasee is definitely a must watch!
