Movie Review: 'Krrish 3' is a surefire Diwali dhamaka

Krrish 3 movie review; Starring Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Kangna Ranaut, Vivek Oberoi; Directed by Rakesh Roshan; Rating: ****

Yup, the desi super-hero comes of age. Kicking, dragging, screaming and gamboling down the nearest suburban shopping area, or peering up an airborne flight which develops a wheel problem.

Krrish (Hrithik Roshan), masked and magnificent in his missionary pose, is ready to take on the world... The big bad world of the dark power brokers who want to rob our earth of all its beauty.

There is something endearingly sincere about Hrithik Roshan's super-hero act. The character's innocence and his own delight at the double life that he leads as the working-class Krishna and his spectacular world-saver of a doppelganger Krrish come through in a series of dexterously executed action sequences that show the power of VFX to create a virtual reality on a par with the ones we have been watching with wide-eyed wonder in Superman, Iron Man, Spiderman...

Man, this super-hero knows his job. His timing as he poses spread-eagled for a take-off is quite awe-inspiring. Hrithik has great fun with all three parts. The scientist father (played with a vocal crutch that could have been avoided), the regular guy and the super-hero all seem real, even as the plot gets progressively mired in the incredible world of virus-infecting mutants who want to... yup you guessed it... destroy the world.

The first 15 minutes of this hurling and hefty homage to heroic hijinks is tame, almost limp. But once Krrish's cape and mask are in place, the narrative gathers pace. Encircling the emotional quotient, grabbing hold of it and placing it in the centre of the special-effects couldn't have been an easy job for the director.

Rakesh Roshan orchestrates the emotions in a flamboyant opera of opulence.

Watch: 'Krrish 3' trailer

There are some effectively executed action sequences whose vivacity is compounded by the shock quotient provided by the villain Kaal, played by a steely-willed grim and menacing Vivek Oberoi.

That Kaal is evil goes without saying. Vivek Oberoi, in his desperately dark den, wheel-chair bound and determined to be the consummate anti-God, doesn't quite strike the terror in our hearts that Xavier Bardem did the last James Bond film 'Skyfall'.

But Oberoi is adequately sinister with a touch of wry humour that comes to the surface in unexpected moments.

But after Hrithik Roshan it is Kangana Ranaut who plays the most interesting character, most interestingly. Gliding into skin-hugging leotards and leather outfits, she seems to bring an underlayer of pain to her evil part. It's a tough role, as it has no reference points to fall back on. Also because Kangana has to walk the tightrope between being an automaton and a full-blooded woman. Kangana Ranaut pulls it off with aplomb.

But Priyanka Chopra is wasted. Wonder what has happened to her lately! She seems to be trying hard to make an impression in under-written parts.

Krrish 3 has its flabby moments and moments that go haywire in pursuit of entertainment. But the narrative holds together. Technical aspects are quite often remarkable, creating visuals that veer towards vitality with a gusto that earlier super-hero films in Hindi missed by a wide margin.

Ra.One, anyone?

S. Thirru's cinematography is sumptuous yet never over-saturated. The riot of colours and drama is minimised. Krrish's flight across the skyline and the ravishing rubble of orchestrated destruction are captured in an ethos of reined-in exuberance.

Chandan Arora edits most of the kinetic material with an eye on austerity of expression. But some scenes, especially in the beginning, are lazily put together, as though the narrative was clearing its throat before the big on-stage audition.

The music (by Rajesh Roshan) and the songs add nothing to the film's very high entertainment value.

Watch: Hrithik, Kangana's romantic song

At last we have India's first truly global super-hero film. Hrithik Roshan slices through the sky skillfully weaving through the emotions and drama and adventure to create a complete entertainer. There are no concessions to vulgarity in this super-hero saga. Younger viewers would specially enjoy Krrish's ability to connect with kids.

Rakesh Roshan combines the breathtaking SFX with a high level of emotion and drama. The result is quite often exhilarating and spectacular.

What a Diwali dhamaka this is!

Genre: Superhero Sci-Fi

Superhero Sci-Fi' genre is one of the toughest to crack; it is like transporting the audiences into a superhero-driven imaginary world that exists only in the director's mind, and kudos to director Rakesh Roshan, who has stood the challenge over time, and he has given India its first superhero, who can actually fly'.

The movie begins with highlights of the prequels giving a good insight of the Krrish' franchise to the audiences, and then, it moves to Kaal ki Kainaat' where an evil scientist operating from a hi-tech den in the snow-clad mountains is performing over-the-edge experiments to create mutants and deadly viruses to destroy human race. Krishna (Hrithik Roshan) lives in Mumbai with his wife Priya (Priyanka Chopra) and father Rohit Mehra (older Hrithik Roshan). Krrish is happy saving lives - helping with safe airplane landing and rescuing a kid hanging on wires - until the deadly virus created by Kaal' breaks out in Mumbai. Kaal has created Kaya (Kangana Ranaut), who has chameleon-like morphing powers, and she is leading the gang of mutants in their mission to spread the virus in Mumbai. Krrish and his family join forces to fight the virus and Kaal's team of mutants. Story takes a twist when Kaya falls in love with Krrish and experiences human emotions.

Hrithik Roshan is superlative; he has the physique and the body language of that of a superhero, and he balances the action and emotional side brilliantly. Hrithik as Krrish's dad Rohit Verma' is impactful; he will make you smile and at times will touch your emotional side especially in the climax scene. Vivek Oberoi brings back the Shakaal-' and Mogambo-era' back with his Kaal' act; in fact, he takes it up a notch to the gripping sci-fi' level; it is undoubtedly the strongest villain act seen in recent times, and Vivek is totally in control. Kangana as Kaya works like a charm; she looks stunning in the opening scene dressed in a red gown and looks superhot in her black-mutant gear too. Priyanka plays the wife and the news-reporter character to perfection.

Rakesh Roshan is a true visionary'; he has transformed the Mumbai gallis' to the New York avenues, and he has created a superhero that flies high just like his Hollywood contemporaries. Krrish 3' is a complete package; it's got mind-blowing action, family drama and the entertainment quotient to its highest level. Honey Irani and Robin Bhatt have teamed up with Rakesh Roshan for the screenplay, which is extremely riveting. Director of photography Tirru has done a stupendous job as the entire Kaal ki Kainaat' is extremely impressive. Action by Tony Ching Sui Tung and Sham Kaushal is mind blowing. Music of the movie by Rajesh Roshan is melodious and the songs are in sync with the movie, and the background score by the duo Salim Sulaiman is noteworthy. Dil tu hi bata' by Alisha Chinai is the star song in the album, and Raghupati Raghav' is a decent dance track sung by Neeraj Sridhar and Monali Thakur.

Krrish 3' is not just a Bollywood film, but it is a proud moment for every Indian, as our Desi Superhero' flies with the same power as Spiderman, Superman, Iron Man and X-Men. And with the Diwali season around the corner, Krrish 3' is going to be the Perfect Dhamaka at the box-office.

Review: Rakesh Roshan's Krrish 3

If your idea of a fantastic time at the movies involves Hrithik Roshan wrestling with a man's tongue, then, my friend, you're in for a blessed treat at the movies this week. Ditto if you're a retailer of friendship-bands.

The rest of us, on the other hand, best stay away from this beastly big-budget juggernaut, a film ostensibly made for kids but one so abysmal that you should be most concerned if your children (or your nephews or your neighbour's kids) want to see this. If they grow up actually liking movies like this, well, there goes the next bloody generation, conditioned for mediocrity from the get-go.

What if, for example, a child asks why Rakesh Roshan's new film is called Krrish 3 when there is no Krrish 2 in existence? No reasonable answer exists, save the possibility that the new Krrish, for some oddball reason, is named after the number of thumbs its protagonist possesses. What the dashing young Krrish doesn't possess is a power not to bore. In fact he " and his pot-bellied father, also played by Hrithik " are blessed with the ability to take a massively budgeted opportunity and suck it dry of all promise, leaving us with a Diwali release that can't possibly be recommended for any reason whatsoever.

Look, I didn't mind the first Krrish. It wasn't a good film or anything, but Hrithik sold the character effectively enough to leave the door ajar for other Bollywood superheroes. One of the few that showed up, showered in hype, was Shah Rukh Khan's catastrophic Ra One, one of the biggest disappointments in movie history. Now, since it isn't right to expect big-screen miracles from the man who made Koyla and Karan Arjun, the only reason Krrish 3 might escape being labelled as bad as Ra One is merely because expectations were lower: all we wanted was a fun film for the kids.

Krrish 3 " which ends up borrowing a whole lot from Ra One, for the record " is not that film. There is no reason Indian children should be allowed to watch it unless tickets are sold really cheap, because the new Thor film releases next week and it'll offer them a true superhero spectacle, with much more relative bang for their buck. There is much brouhaha about the visual effects in the new Krrish film, and while occasionally competent, they remain so dismally derivative of iconic superhero films that one can't take them seriously. And the fact that the Pirates Of The Caribbean theme kicks in every time Krrish is in mid air doesn't help. (Danny Elfman's Spider-Man theme, conversely, plays whenever the hero's truly tense. Every alternate scene, pretty much.)

So there are two Hrithiks, and its harder to say which is more excruciating. In one corner is old Rohit The Demented, a developmentally-disabled old man an alien refused to cure a couple of movies ago. If you close your eyes (which is not bad advice at any point during this film) he sounds like an Anil Kapoor mimic trying to do a very drunk voice. He's a scientist, however, which means he is fiendishly smart and at least knows what he's doing. His son, Krrish, has become bewilderingly stupid since we last met him, probably because the filmmakers want to make sure we don't confuse his role with that of papa. There is thus much BigMoose-ian lumbering about in alarmingly tight vests, except when he's Krrish and his jaw is perpetually quivering with rage. That or the mask is way too snug.

And there's the baddie. "Fusion is the future," says Vivek Oberoi's Kaal, sounding for all the world like Bally Sagoo did back when he mattered. Immobile from the neck down, Kaal is a sinister mastermind who creates man-animal hybrids that lead to a bunch of poorly-constructed mutants with long tongues et al. Kangna Ranaut, for example, plays a shapeshifting creature born out of human and chameleon DNA. Many unanswered questions are born out of Kaal's setup, the most crucial being why Ranaut doesn't have a bad prosthetic orange forehead/nose like her fellow "maanwar" brethren, and who on earth has been applying the eyeliner for Kaal for all these years?

Still, a strapped-down Oberoi is mostly bearable even if he's basically Magneto and Professor X rolled into one. Priyanka Chopra, who plays Krrish's wife Priya, is anything but that, a shrill giggler with the most inane role possible. Ranaut makes the most of a far better part, and emerges the only plus in this C-minus production. She's intriguing, she's cold, she's sexy and she holds our interest " at least till she randomly starts assaulting people with drop-kicks and even a Boston Crab. (Are you watching, Mr McMahon?)

The film is 152 minutes long, a fact corroborated by my wristwatch, but we might as well call Ripley's. It stretches on forever, never amusing, never exciting, never anything but a wasted effort. The songs are almost intentionally horrid, each of them. Daftness abounds in every direction: the bad guys covered in green goop as if they just won Nickelodeon awards; scientists talk to themselves all the time and Surpanakha from the Ramayana is their first go-to example for mutation; a pregnant Priyanka is laid out on what has to be a funky ping-pong table; and there are hulking black statues celebrating Krrish " as if Mayawati's taken a shine to the lad.

And twenty minutes of the film are spent in hawking Krrish-shaped wristbands that make you a part of Krrish's team.' Krrish even delivers the "don't try this at home" message in the flesh. It's all very well until the climax, where a kid rebels against his mom who says they'll give their lives for Krrish. No, exclaims he, we'll take the villain's life instead. Ookay then, that's the message we're going with. (And we thought Man Of Steel had an ethics issue.) Then Krrish shows up as the statue of liberty. It's all positively krrishastrous.

Just stay away, will you? It's the responsible thing to do. An empty wrist will serve you best.
