Why Khan's earlier films flopped?

It started from 2005 I think.
It was the last year that Amir and SRK gave flops( Mangal Pandey and Paheli).
After that they never gave any flops.
All the films they performed did business of millions.
For Salman the hit saga began from 2009.
And it is still going.
These films have no story. But still they become blockbusters just for the Khans.
Then why did their earlier good films flop?
Ex:
Babul
Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam
Kyun Ki
Janemaan
Mela
Dil Se

The above mentioned films were much better than the mindless films they do now.
But why couldn't their star power saved those films?
What do the Khans have now that they did not have earlier?

What do the Khans have now that they did not have earlier?

along with increasing population of India & World, their fan following also increased😆

The films u mentioned where mostly average and boring so flopped. Mangal pandey was pathetic and a mega bore, mela i watched the last few min of the movie and thought this is so funny, very unrealistic and the ending reminded me of OSO. I loved Jaanaman bt it was weird that short guy was creepy i dnt knw what to make of that film. Kyun ki weird again. I enjoyed the 3 srk films u mentioned so i dnt knw why they dnt work. And as for babul that wasnt a sk film he was in it for half the film so rather rani and Big B fans could tel us why it dnt work(my opinion must be coz of overacting and they rather should hav had john playing the 1st husband and sk playing the 2nd). Bt the real reason for this post i guess is to defend the flop star ranbir. Nw even though these films u mentioned of the khans wnt their best i bet that they are a 100% times better than his flop. After his disaster no newcomer wil ever be banked upon again. No star will be known as a future super star again lol. Although dnt think he should be blamed for that film.

Now films are released very scientifically. As VictorLordJr stated..if a film flops today that producers have to be REALLY dumb.

Number of screens, ticket price, overseas, broad range of mediums to promote, emergence of multiplex audience and a lot of factors make it very easy to make a below average to average film a superhit today.
