SATYAGRAHA Had Strictly Average Day One

"Satyagraha" released across 2600-2700 screens and with such a big cast this is a mammoth film from all perspective. Taking that in consideration, film had strictly decent day one at box office.

Film started on expected lines and occupancy was 35% - 45% across the board. But due to limited growth in pockets, film failed to get big day one which was expected from such a big film. Only Rajasthanand Mumbai were good to certain extent but other places underperformed.

Film has to perform well over the weekend and week one as next week will again see two big releases in "Zanjeer" and "Shuddh Desi Romance". Film should hope for big jump tomorrow but that will be a tough task.

As per early trends, film should close around 8-9 cr nett on day one unless film shows dramatic growth in the evening.

Other new releases were negligible at box office. "Madras Cafe" suffered due to some screen loss and "Chennai Express" was below 1 cr mark as per early trends.

'Satyagraha' review: Well-intentioned drama turned into a plodding sermon

Rajeev Masand CNN-IBN | 30-Aug-2013 23:48 PM

Director: Prakash Jha
Starcast: Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Manoj Bajpai, Arjun Rampal

With Satyagraha director Prakash Jha once again raids the headlines, this time turning his gaze on the growing public resentment towards the deep-rooted corruption in the system. Jha borrows liberally from real events and the lives of real people, including famed anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and the Jan Lokpal Andolan he inspired. Unfortunately Jha's heavy-handed direction turns this well-intentioned drama into a plodding sermon.

Amitabh Bachchan stars as Dwarka Anand, a principled school teacher in Ambikapur, who not only stands up for what he believes in, but verbally pummels anyone who doesn't fall in line with his strong views. At one point, his son's friend Manav (Ajay Devgn), who is staying at their home, must pack up his things and leave in the middle of the night for clashing with the old man's ideology. Rather extreme, don't you think?

When Dwarka is arrested for assaulting a district collector some years later, Manav returns to help. Along with a youth leader (Arjun Rampal), he mobilizes a truth-seeking movement led by Dwarka, who demands that the local government clean up its act and empower the people. Their campaign gains momentum when prominent TV journalist Yasmin Ahmed (Kareena Kapoor) reports from the scene. Even as Dwarka, or Dadu as he's rechristened by his swarm of supporters, goes on a hunger strike to protest the government's inaction, smarmy minister Balram Singh (Manoj Bajpai) tries every trick in the book to scuttle the movement.

Like Aarakshan and Chakravyuh before it, Satyagraha too suffers from Jha's tendency to overstuff the film with too many ideas. In his attempt to hold a mirror to our troubled times, Jha alludes to such varied incidents as the 2G scam, whistleblower Satyendra Dubey's murder, and Arvind Kejriwal's alignment with Anna Hazare's cause, linking the events with a not-always convincing thread. Apart from this, the director dilutes the film's core issue by throwing in a gratuitous romance between Manav and Yasmin, as well as an excuse of an item number for the opening credits sequence. And in what has become another Prakash Jha staple, his characters don't talk to each other, they speechify with lofty dialogue.

The story flounders as the drama builds up, and collapses like a house of cards in its clunky, overblown climax. Satyagraha, which starts off as a realistic film, gets shrill along the way and, disappointingly, offers no satisfying resolutions at the end of this long slog.

There are, however, some strengths in this endeavour, notably in the way Amitabh Bachchan and Manoj Bajpai approach their roles. Bachchan infuses Dadu with righteous anger and heart-wrenching pathos, while Bajpai, saddled with the part of a caricaturish politician, evokes the required contempt. Ajay Devgan, as the ambitious entrepreneur who finds his calling in social reform, delivers a committed performance. Kareena Kapoor, and Amrita Rao in the part of Dadu's widowed daughter-in-law, are sincere, yet stuck with boringly-sketched characters, and Rampal ably reprises the role of the hot-headed political leader he played in Raajneeti.

In Satyagraha, Jha effectively meshes the urban angst witnessed on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook with the ground realities of India's heartland, but the plot subsequently loses its way. Sadly, the director's storytelling has become so hackneyed that his cinema now merely pays lip service to issues instead of making a stronger comment.

I'm going with two out of five for Satyagraha. It may be coming from a good place, but it doesn't know where it's going.

Rating: 2 / 5

Good thing I never expected much from Kareena's character once the promos came out. It was obvious that they just needed a big star to compliment the starcast for that role.
But what I do want is for the film to at least do well.

More reviews of Kareena's misrepresented character.

What sticks out as the most unconvincing, though, is the treatment of Kareena's character, Yasmin. Other than being absolutely pretty all the time " fully made out, every hair in place " Yasmin is fairly unbelievable as a journalist. There is no way that she, supposedly an unbiased journalist, would be allowed to be the face of a political movement while still working for her news channel. Her job is established in the beginning, but somewhere down the line she suspends all other work just to be a part of this group " and a fairly big part, too, since her face is plastered all over their posters. To keep the journalist label intact, though, the script requires her to report from the frontline of the scene very often... except that it's difficult to understand how any media house would allow anyone to become so openly involved in a political movement while still reporting from the scene.

In between there are a few appreciators, but for Kareena fans, this is nothing but criticism. Kareena doesnt get this kinda average feedback. Nope.
Not even in flops. Not even in terrible films like Heroine. These are UNACCEPTABLE reviews for Kareena.

The leading ladies Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Rao who are back on the silver screen after a long time did appreciably well

His lady love, Kareena Kapoor, who plays TV journalist Yasmin Ahmed, comes off as a natural even though she does not have much to work with.

Kareena Kapoor Khan in an ill-fitted role of a hotshot journalist puts up in a very ordinary performance.

Kareena Kapoor was neat.

Kareena too brings intensity and charm to her role. She's a feisty journalist and Kareena has the right livewire energy.

Kareena Kapoor, and Amrita Rao in the part of Dadu's widowed daughter-in-law, are sincere, yet stuck with boringly-sketched characters

I knew the reviews wouldn't be great, something about this film seemed so regressive and repetitive from the very start. Feeling so so bad for Kareena and Amrita, just wished somewhere down the line that the movie does something for Amrita to bring her back in the league, just like Shahid got a chance to bounce back. OMG :(

Now it makes me think if Punit Malhotra can actually pull off another I Hate Luv Stories, which IMO was dismal anyway, but the music and glamour saved it. GTPM needs a lot more than IHLS today to survive, than just good music and glamour. Punit, please surprise me. :/

Well good if Kareena's not getting the typical feedback she's used to.
This girl never learns the easy way. She needs to be slapped upside the head a couple of times for her to learn. And even then she doenst.

Bring on Gori Tere Pyar Mein. Gladly please

Yikes, I remember Kareena was still praised for doing Heroine even though we all knew how that movie turned out.

I also think Kareena just goes about choosing movies the wrong way. Good actress, but with poor script-choosing abilities. I think this is one of the reasons why I could never really like her as much...it's because I don't like the characters she chooses, barring a few like Geet in JWM. Hopefully the message will get across to her...she's a damn good actress.

Her length of the role doesnt even matter as long as the role is at least good!
Some of her most praised performances have been Omkara, Talaash, 3 Idiots, where she had short role length.

And even in movies that flopped, like Kurbaan she got critical acclaim.
Or terrible films like Heroine.

But here she got the short end of the stick both ways.
Short role that is under-developed.
