Standing by Kamal Haasan: fans offer cheques, stars offer tweets

Chennai: The support for Kamal Haasan spiked today with prominent film stars and directors in Chennai and Bollywood rallying around the actor-director whose film Vishwaroopam has been banned for two-weeks by the Tamil Nadu government.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa denounced suggestions that the ban amounts to a violation of free speech, and said it was required to maintain law and order because leaders of some Muslim groups had objected to the portrayal of the community in the 95-crore spy thriller.

Kamal Haasan disclosed at a press conference yesterday that the ban on the film has hurtled him into borderline bankruptcy. He said he has hocked his house and other properties to a money-lender. Fans responded by gathering at his office this morning with cheques and demand drafts, a sign of their loyalty to their icon. Among them was popular Southern actor Surya.

Actors and directors, in a flurry of tweets, pointed out that the government has no right to intervene after the national censor board has cleared a movie. "A zone of shame for a sham of a political scenario...Kamal Haasan needs not only our support but fraternity proactivity...like NOW!!!," said director Karan Johar. Bollywood superstar Salman Khan tweeted this diktat to his fans: "go stand outside the cinema hall and insist on seeing the film. It's a movie, entertainment. What law and order problem on a movie?" (Support Kamal Haasan and his film, Salman tells fans)

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari, also on Twitter, said that this morning, that it's time to "revisit" the Cinematograph Act to ensure that the decisions of the Censor Board are implemented. Last night, he told NDTV that state governments cannot over-rule the Censor Board, which is created by an act of Parliament.

Kamal Haasan thanks supporters, says received 'huge support' from Muslims

IBN TAMIL NADU, Updated Jan 31, 2013 at 06:41pm IST

Mumbai: Actor and director Kamal Haasan thanked those who "stood by" him and said he received "huge Muslim community support" during the controversy surrounding his latest film 'Vishwaroopam'. "In all these hurdles my Muslim brothers were behind me. These are the true Muslims. This is the real India," Haasan said while addressing the media on Thursday evening.

The actor, who had earlier threatened to leave the country after the release of the film was stayed by the Madras High Court in Tamil Nadu, said he was not "threatening, but was very angry". "I do not want anyone to get into such a problem. It is insulting, not only to me as an actor, but also for the nation," Haasan said.

He also thanked Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa and said "she had nothing to do with it". Justifying the ban on Vishwaroopam, Jayalalithaa had clarified the stay on the film early Thursday and said, "The only way to maintain law and order was to provide police protection to all 524 theatres. I want to know if this was practically, physically possible. If the strength of the Tamil Nadu police would have been put on these theatres, what would we do about their regular duties?"

The Rs 95 crore espionage thriller was originally scheduled to be released in Tamil and Telugu on January 25, but a day before the screenings, the Tamil Nadu government imposed a two-week ban on the film after some Muslim groups complained that some scenes in the film portrayed the community in a bad light.

Earlier in the day, Haasan had said he will not approach the Supreme Court over the release of the film. But a visibly calmer Haasan had said he was still hurt at the treatment being meted out to his film. The talks with various stakeholders are still on, he had added.

"Even yesterday I was calm, I'm only hurt, I'm still hurt. Talks are still underway. I am not moving the Supreme court," he had said. "I still have hope things may be settled with Tamil Nadu government. For now, I may wait before moving to Supreme Court," said Haasan.

The movie gave me Ra1 like vibes. It was very expensive and was Kamal's dream project just like Ra1 was SRK's dream project. He put his all-money, reputation on this one project. Fortunately for SRK he didnt have to entail losses. But without a theaterical release in its target market I wonder how he will recover the costs.
