Overseas setting had become really common in the 2000s though. It became irritating after a point. It's good that desi setting has once again come to the forefront in recent years.

That's what happens when you go overboard. I can't tell the difference between all the masala films today...they all look the same to me: RR, SOS, Singham, Dabangg, Ghajini, Dabangg 2, etc...😆

People get bored eventually if it's all the same. That's why Akshay's comedies went out of fashion...then new trend comes in. It'll be interesting to see what the next one is.

I dont think Lagaan can be counted as a rural masala movie. I would rate Gadar in the same category. But despite Gadar's success it didnt start a barrage of stars doing movies like Gadar. But Dabangg was different in the sense that other stars like Ajay, Akshay also started following the trend successfully.
