It is true that Aamir is best discussed in relation to quality and acting. And not ONLY box office numbers. But I sought to discuss it because it's now begun to be hyped up as something of an "all time" comparison/record. I do not mean to say everybody does it. But several do it in their analysis/comparisons on Aamir with others.

The quality thing is of course acceptable. But you are right that people expect more. Prior to Lagaan, he did do very routine kind of films (an HHRPK, DHKMN, Raja Hindustani, Ishq, Dil are no outstanding cinema type stuff). I mean, nothing extra-ordinary or game-changing with exception of 2-3 films which later came to attain cult status.

Still I did not mean to discuss his quality of work for that would entail an entirely different debate!

[Pre-Lagaan quality and post-Lagaan quality have had vast difference]

If those films were disaster that's because they had absolutely NOTHING going for them! Be it release period and no big stars, big directors or big banners.

Talaash had AKP and Excel, Aamir, Rani, Kareena. And even this film - though doing well, isn't some great shakes at single screens is it?

And will an AK film be compared to PST now?

Answer me how does it compare to his own TZP?

Here lies your answer for GENRE importance.

Genre = Romance / Comedy = Film will have no action, no suspense, no thriller, only romance drama, music peppy n comedy.

Genre = Masala / Action = Drama, Emotions, Comedy, Romance, Music peppy

__________ Talaash, Kahaani, PST, VD

Genre = Suspense / Thriller / Subject Oriented / Not so Popular Music = Falls in this category.

I am not comparing Aamir with Irfan, i am comparing 2 films which was of same Genre, just that Aamir was bigger star so it earned 90 cr at box office as compare to 22 cr of Irfan's PST.

As for Talaash - it's not a radically different film. People communicating to dead or a ghost avenging her death are not new themes. This is old school Vinod Khanna/Manoj Kumar type formula.

It's a hit only due to its low budget and controlled economics. It's like how Aamir fans call Dhobi Ghat a hit because it recovered its investment!

The fact is that though it was never supposed to be a 3 Idiots or a Ghajini but it wasn't supposed to do just 80-90 crore nett!

2 years ago Raajneeti made over 92 crore nett. It released in non holiday period and only had Ranbir/Katrina (don't tell me Manoj Bajpai, Nana Patekar or a special appearance by Ajay Devgn meant a huge "star" cast!). It was a serious film yet Talaash will make less money than it.

In fact, Aamir's own Taare Zameen Par which released in 2007 made over 131 crores worldwide gross despite clashing with a mega-entertainer like Welcome. At that time Aamir wasn't even considered the Midas Touch guy which he's considered after Ghajini/3 Idiots. And a story of a dyslexia affected child, with no heroines is anyday riskier than a conventional ghost-avenging her death story or marital woes/suspense story!

If TZP managed to make so much money back then you can calculate how much it would have made if it released in today's times!

So Talaash is an underperformer no matter how much anyone defends it!

Genre one does not cut it. TZP was more risky than Talaash (and more so when it released 5 years ago!). Just tell me what would its collections be when adjusted according to today's times? It was 131 crore worldwide if I am not mistaken.

Talaash was a safer and relatively more conventional film that that.

Please also tell if given number of prints and collections accumulated - is Kahani a bigger success or Talaash? For that matter even Barfi released with lesser prints.

Well aamir's BO power is overrated. Yes he may have started the 100 cr. club but he doesn't have the best BO ratio and also he doesn't have the most amount of BO successful movies.

also this whole mr. perfectionist tag is ridiculous. He has flaws in acting and he is not convincing in all the roles he has played. Also it's not true that each of his movies have quality. Talaash his lastest release was an awful movie which had no logic, I don't get why aamir made that trashy movie.

You're right, Billa. I honestly can't remember how Aamir was viewed in the 90s since I was too young then. He had a few good quality films at that time and the rest, not so much, hahaha.

But even then, Aamir was never known about the numbers. Obviously, if one compares him to SRK and Salman, then they have a bigger star power in terms of BO, but no one keeps hyping Aamir up constantly so I'm not sure how his BO is overrated.

U r mixing a SUBJECT ORIENTED movie with SUSPENSE THRILLER, how come u picking up TZP against Talaash? u think they fall in same Genre or of same kind?

A Similar connection of Suspense/Thriller will be of Ghajini which was little bit Suspense/Action oriented movie...

Buddy if u have to compare Movies, u have to compare it with same Kind or at least Genre.

Talaash is 2500 Screen release not 2800. Talaash got no hit music, no peppy music which is popular in disc or events where ppl enjoy n listen repeatedly. With all such things, a movie which would have been complete disaster at BO if it won't have Aamir Khan in it.

Amir's movies are kinda Anti Salman. Not all but most of them. Most of his hit movies are good qualitywise but BO collection average to good whereas Salman's movies are not good qualitywise but BO collections are always off the chart.
