'Talaash' -- the aftermath!

By Taran Adarsh, December 5, 2012 - 08:23 IST
Aamir Khan. Salman Khan. Shah Rukh Khan. The three Khans enjoy tremendous fame, popularity and fan following across the globe, which explains why their films are looked forward to with enthusiasm. Aamir's acting career took a backseat when he decided to focus on producing a string of hi-concept films in the intervening period [PEEPLI [LIVE], DHOBI GHAT and DELHI BELLY]. Sure, the actor appeared as the second lead in DHOBI GHAT, besides making an appearance in a song in DELHI BELLY, but post 3 IDIOTS, Hindi cinema's biggest hit so far, TALAASH is his first full-fledged role after almost three years.

Aamir is known to set new benchmarks [GHAJINI was the first Hindi film to cross the 100 cr mark]. His track record at the BO is unbeatable [3 IDIOTS continues to be the biggest grosser ever]. His name is synonymous with qualitative films… Three prime reasons why everyone expected TALAASH to deliver big time at the BO. So has TALAASH lived up to those lofty expectations?

First things first! Let's not compare TALAASH with 3 IDIOTS. Let's not compare it with EK THA TIGER or JAB TAK HAI JAAN either [a section of the viewers seems to be doing so!]. They belong to different genres. Expecting TALAASH to break the record set by Aamir himself [with 3 IDIOTS] would be foolhardy. TALAASH caters to a niche audience. It's more of a multiplex film. Also, suspense thrillers have their limitations as far as BO revenue is concerned. You can compare DABANGG 2 and CHENNAI EXPRESS, hardcore masala films both, with EK THA TIGER. But you *cannot* compare TALAASH with DABANGG 2, CHENNAI EXPRESS or EK THA TIGER.

A section of the movie-going audience is of the opinion that Aamir shouldn't have consented to do a film like TALAASH. Why, may I ask? Should actors be limiting themselves to mindless entertainers? Doesn't Aamir have a right to do the kind of cinema he feels is appropriate for him? Every actor has his/her reasons for accepting a film assignment. The naysayers may label their choices regressive [JAB TAK HAI JAAN] or an easy route to attain success [DABANGG 2], but we must respect the decisions of SRK and Salman. Also Aamir.

In the 1980s, when the Bachchan era was at its peak, Amitabh Bachchan had his four favorites -- Ramesh Sippy, Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra and Yash Chopra -- but he took time out of his busy schedule to do films for Hrishikesh Mukherjee. While the films helmed by Chopra, Sippy, Desai and Mehra would fetch astronomical prices from distributors, the ones directed by Hrishi-da would be sold for one-third or one-fourth of the price because the distribution fraternity as well as the aam aadmi knew that Hrishi-da's films were in a different space altogether. No one compared ABHIMAAN, JURMANA or ALAAP with ZANJEER, SHOLAY, DEEWAAR or AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY then. So why are we making such ludicrous comparisons now?

TALAASH, like I pointed out earlier, is more of a multiplex film and will have to rely on the revenue generated from the plexes mainly. The film has comfortably crossed Rs 50 crores in 4 days on the sheer strength of its multiplex business. It's faring exceptionally well in Overseas too and if it sustains in its second weekend, it should be a safe bet for Reliance, its producers and of course, Aamir.

The BO records could be shattered later

briahna, you and I felt more or less the same about the film :)

BUT especially about Aamir's ears. I mentioned it a few pages back, but I seriosly found them so distracting 😆 There were times when I had force myself to stop staring at his ears and pay more attention...at the end when we just see his silhouette, it was just too hilarious. 😆 Aamir, next surgery = make your ears less pointy. 😆

choco...and akki need to have his gums fixed. like we jantas pay so much , and when these ears and gums, and nose (saifs) hinder the movie..its not nice.

at times i felt like taking a string and tying his ears behind. there, makes so much easier on eyes.

Is Aamir Khan upset with Talaash's response?

Updated: Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 11:07 [IST]

Mumbai: As per superstar Aamir Khan, his movie Talaash "was a risky film to make." The film Talaash, which is weaved around a thriller cum horror factor, has received mixed response nation wide. While many liked it, several others blamed it for its slow pace. But, looking at the entire situation, it seems as if Aamir is upset with this.

A leading daily quoted Aamir Khan saying thatTalaash was "not a Universal film." He clarified that the film hasn't received 100 percent positive response, as "many people may not like the super natural films but Talaash has got the repeat value."

Aamir knew the fact that Talaash is not a film that will cater to all kind of audiences. Yet, he said that he's happy with the Box Office opening of the film. Talking about his upcoming movie Dhoom 3, Aamir further said that the movie will be an universal film, and even the kids will like it.

Talaash – A little too laboured for Aamir Khan?

Aamir Khan in a still from Talaash Movie

Has the 'perfectionist' tag turned out to be counter productive for Aamir Khan? That's the question making the round of a vast audience base ever since the release of Talaash. Though the film has seen a good box office outcome so far, the overall response has been mixed.

"That is something uncharacteristic of an Aamir Khan starrer. Reason being that ever since the release of Taare Zameen Par, Ghajiniand 3 Idiots, one factor that has stayed consistent for Aamir Khan and his films is universal acceptance. There has never been a finger pointed at his act or the choice of script. The success garnered by these films is further testimony to that. However Talaash has evidenced a few chinks in the armour and they show. For a change, the feedback coming in isn't the kind that indicates universal acceptance," comments an analyst.

The first signs were visible when the critic's feedback started coming in. Though no one has termed the film as bad, there have been a few comments around the film being average or just good, something that doesn't augur well with an Aamir Khan product.

"When such great brand and hype is build for a superstar, it is indeed a challenge to live up to those expectations time and again. One can sense that Aamir was conscious of that and the delays in completion of Talaash pretty much indicates that as well. Somehow, the whole 'perfectionist' tag has seemingly thrown in a lot of weight. Aamir is excellent in what he has done but one can sense that it is a laboured effort," a critic adds.

This is evidenced from the fact that even though the film has managed to cross the opening weekend collections of 3 Idiots, it is highly unlikely that it would run a distance as long as the Rajkumari Hirani directed feel good affair. The good news though is that Aamir has Dhoom:3 lined up next and that should be good enough to register a quintessential blockbuster success in 2013.

BI, when you watch the film you will understand 😆 At that silhouette scene I'm talking about, everyone around me started laughing and discussing how he looked like an elf/goblin 😆

briahna, add Kajol's un-threaded brows, SRK's disguting cigarette finger 😆
