May contain spoilers. 'Supernatural' or 'Naturally Super': What keeps Talaash afloat against Criticism?
December 4th, 2012 by Deepak Singh

Talaash Movie Poster

Months before Talaash released, parallels were drawn between Talaash and Kahaani. People said it was loosely based on Kahaani and that's the reason why Aamir Khan was delaying the release of Talaash. It was said to be done so to allow the memories of Kahaani fade from public's mind. As if public memory is very long! Then closer to its release, hundreds of rumors surfaced with regards to the film's climax. I had an inkling of the fact that the film had something "supernatural" about it. However, watching the preview, I actually felt the film was 'naturally super'.

Next, I had a discussion with one of the film-economics 'experts' over his claim "Talaash is set for a huge loss". My contention, 1st weekend would fetch nothing less than a 45-50 cr. And, bingo! I hit it right with the film grossing nearly 48 cr in three days. I'm most sure, that the film will have a total collection of 110 crore or more. Add to it the overseas collections.

Now, without disclosing the climax, when I look in retrospect, I seem to know why the film defies all the detractors and naysayers.

The film opens to a superb screenplay and maintains its grip throughout, despite sometimes slowing its pace. But, the end is being said to be akin to "much ado about nothing (khoda pahar nikli chuhiya)". This opinion may have a pinch of truth to an extent but the fact that the film works in spite of this makes it a directorial masterpiece. That you feel wanting for more, or something else than what its climax offers is a sign of the fact that the film keeps you glued to your seat till the end.

The performances are above par. Aamir doesn't need a word for his performance. But, every other actor – from a Rani Mukerji to Nawazuddin Siddiqui to Raj Kumar Yadav has performed to precision. However, Kareena Kapoor is a surprise package who comes across as a prostitute full of Bollywoodish attitude or so much of fragility around her character. By climax you understand she must have had to wander in two zones to inculcate that fragility and those nuances in her character.

The screenplay seems to give up pace at times, only to surprise you the next minute. And, at times you are misled into forming opinions prematurely. But, isn't that what good thrillers are made of? With the film halfway through, some females around my seat started whispering – "see the difference between what a woman looks for and what a man looks for, in the same circumstances of a disturbed family life. A woman tries to solve the problem while the man hunts for solace outside family." I suggested them patience. And, poof, I again struck it right. The man didn't find solace in adultery.

The film has lot of values ingrained and at the same time, revolves around the tales of lust, money and desires. True to its name, most of the characters are seen engaged in some talaash (search) or the other. The characters are so finely built and story provides them with proper blooming – although bit "slowly" but surely. Nuances are thoughtful. The screenplay is beautiful and the music succeeds to grab its share of your mind space.

Yet, what is the reason a section of people is seen talking all the negative things about this Aamir Khan film? Yes, more than anything else, it is the 'thought' of Talaash being an Aamir Khan film that makes it attract all the flak. Today, every film featuring Aamir Khan ends up being perceived as an Aamir Khan film. A film by an actor who takes all the world's time to put life into the character and meticulously work on the details, Mr. Perfectionist. So, the popular discontent is how come Mr Perfectionist overlooked the very theme, rather genre. But, the matter of the fact is also that Aamir Khan can't be said to have a genre that he practices or follows. He has experimented almost all the multiple forms and streams in storytelling in Bollywood. Therefore, probably, expectations are high every time Aamir is up with a film. He's expected not to go wrong with anything. He still didn't.

The film is certainly not an Aamir Khan genre. In fact, in a long time no mainstream or big actor has done a film of this genre. This makes it a welcome break to see a film in this genre by a star who is perfectionist too. A film well-made in the genre gives hope that more people may follow in with good films touching this theme. A hope that you won't always have to contend with a film with low production values, kitsch sequences and an unnatural climax in the name of supernatural, made by a Ram Gopal Varma or a Vikram Bhatt. Unlike those films touching this theme, Talaash never seems to be going anywhere close to sleaze, in spite of lust and brothels being in the center of its premises. The film has neither a slap nor slapstick over the two hours something of its duration. It doesn't give you a dj vu, unlike most other south-inspired blockbusters of recent times that look alike with action, cuts, lingo, characterization and slapstick.

Talaash underplays a big star with the production design kept akin to a sensible low-budget film that values the script more than the star-power. The star, notwithstanding the charisma attached to him, performs as a low-profile performer actor, so well supported by his co-actors. The film defies its genre and rises so above it that gives you a real break from the recent blockbusters. Your 'sixth sense' may read a lot between the lines but, a well-executed soothing film with an unusual climax and a superstar has a lot of promise for near future in Bollywood.

seriously?? we're gonna play this crap abt BO comparisons?

Talaash is a film with zero promotions, absolutely no hit music, its slow paced, its dark and dosent have "glamour" (unless u count kareena's clothes which is more a requirement of the character than focusing on a female actor's body parts to lure audiences in), aamir dosent "romance" any heroine or dance the shit out of himself...ofcourse its not gonna score as well as the films with gorgeous ladies giggling their body parts and men giving punch dialogues or fake neck simulating the heroine...🤪

the fact tht it managed an opening good enough to get into the top 10 alone is testement to aamir's star power...the fact tht aamir has the balls to do a film like this (good or bad is ones own POV...im not talking abt tht) as in a subject which isnt exactly people pleasing when all his peers are trying to get the ladies swooning n the whistles going in the single screens shows tht he dosent give a shit abt his box office results...

whether it manages to sustain or not, is upto how well recieved the film is...but tht has nothing to do with aamir...he has proven his star power...

the last time aamir did a people pleasing film, we all know how tht went...and no one has been able to touch tht record yet even with inflation and increased number of screens...

BOO YAH!!! STAR.POWER.right there...😎

I have said myself several times...That the BO collections of two movies should never ever be compared ...because they are not at a levelled playing field...remember the big discussion in the SOS thread...But NO...Shahrukh's movie had to be compared with every Tom, Dicks and Harrys movie...just to put him down...the same thing is continuing now...why blame anyone??...What is wrong now...was wrong then also...👎🏼

Very well said...

Such a dark movie has a chance to make 100 cr in India itself is a big thing i would say.

Honestly, all this BO talk is so pointless. 5-10 years from now, who's going to remember that film A made 102 crores or 32 crores besides some die-hard fans and/or trade analysts? What people remember is simply how they felt about the film and maybe final verdict (in hit, flop standards)...and that's all that matters in the end too...

So what if Talaash doesn't make 100 crores, big deal! It doesn't make Aamir any less of a star, any less of an actor that people care about. Are we forgetting that Aamir himself was the one that inaugurated this "elite 100 crore club" or that he still holds the record for the highest grosser in this club...even 3 years later? I mean 3I is probably one of the two films in that group that had a very positive WOM. The others all received very mixed reviews...and they belong to a certain genre that's "in" or are simply films made to cash in on weekend 1.

I honestly feel all 3 Khans are beyond this BO. They've all achieved a lot, they're all superstars in their own right, and it's just plain weird to read people writing them off because some film doesn't meet some lame BO criteria.

i agree...

u cant question the star power of ANY of the 3 khans...they've been here for 20 odd years...they know how to get people to come to the theatres...now they are at the stage where they dunt even have to try to get ppl into the cinema halls...ppl go watch them by default...

so the "my khan is bigger than ur khan" debate is as pointless as blank paper...all the three khans are on the EXACT same level in terms of audience reception...true story...

^Exactly, "people go watch them by default"...if that's not star power, then what is?

The only thing these Khans might disappoint the audience in is the expectations we might have from the film itself.

Just got back watching this one.

Reema had such a tight script here. Actually there were many good stories going on in this movie. That's the beauty of it. And hence she was able to throw in so many characters, say play/mould them, and that she successfully did. The first half was brilliant. It was so good that you can't wait to see what happens in second half. BUT, when second half came, the dragging began. Your patience is really tested. But , still, you are somewhat hooked at least to find out the final outcome.

BUT when the final/climax does arrive, you can't help, but say…LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DONE!!

The saving grace:

The characters. Each and every character have their own story, hell even that aunty wh**e character comes out live and how about that shashis girl. Reema here must be lauded for paying so much attention to these characters, small or big. Its these characters that make the movie work, and how. As each character is introduced, you get hooked on them, waiting to find out what comes next for them.

Amir Khan – Was this out of the world, mindblowing, nail-biting, award worthy performance. NOT. But when does amir give these kind of performances. NEVER. But what amir gives is that inspiration to other characters in his movies to come out with a bang and bring out your best. He makes his presence felt in the movie in such a way that I feel no other actors can do. That's amir khan. Take any of his movies, tzp, 3 idiots, ghajni,…it's the other characters that take the centerstage, rather than amir himself. Such an impact this guy has on others. So here too, he was good, as expected. And that's it.

But..hey amir, you gotta do something about those ears…it was way too distracting. I thought I would be disturbed by ur new mooch, but it was your elf ears. Fix it.

Rani mukherji – you know what , when rani came with kareena in mdk, I said it was kareena who outshone rani. But as I read the reviews, the critics as well as the janta were raving about rani and thrashing kareena. I was so so disappointed. Say to a point that I almost started to hate rani. Yup…harsh harsh hated...bad bad briahna. But today….rani won my heart. What a wonderful performance that was. One look at her, you can read her face. She played a depressed wife to tilt, boy those tears seemed real. Her face stayed with me after the movie . Great job rani. Hang in Bollywood longer.

Kareena kapoor – yes her role is not big. I think rani and kareenas roles were not more than 30 to 40 mins. She has a complex role here, but her approach to it and delivery wanna make you stand up and say …BRAVO. I felt its her role which provided some light, brought few smiles, to this otherwise dark, sort of depressing movie. And yes, this performance is miles and miles ahead of that overrated chameli. And OMFH…she looked like a doll, an angel, under water. I really wanted to hug her there. BRILLIANT JOB ..kareena!! Her best since jwm, no doubt. Cheers kareena, and you hang in too in Bollywood…much needed.

But for me the show stealer:………STAND UP AND SAY OUT LOUD: TEHMUR………………………….TAKE A BOW. This guy rocked or what. 10/10.What a slam dunking he did……………………………….completely took the whole show to next level. cool cool cool!

Well all others did fine as well. And technically movie was good, I loved sampaths music, oh must say impressed with editing, and screenplay was also top notch.

So what I felt coming out of theater. Somewhat CHEATED. Yes, reema had everything going good, but somewhere it got all screwed up, and the final show is nothing but an average to say bit over average affair. Now that disappoints.

Still, better than some of recent craps pouring in ..

Oh well…I will give it 3/5. Good first half…so so second half. And again, the climax bloody sucked, like killed the movie.

Btw…I feel that amir is not too happy with this movie. He kept delaying this movie, now when i hv seen the movie, I believe that he did ask reema to change the climax. Maybe it was too similar to kahaani, so they had no choice but to change it.but hey….kahaani is way way better than this movie. Hahaha….and vidya beats all.🤣

Oops..and one more thing before I sign off here…dabanng trailer was shown. For some weird reason it felt thanda. No seetis, no gaalis, no claps, no laughs, giggles, nothing from the audience..and the theater was almost packed…it's a welfare night here in Canada on Tuesdays. Hmmm…interesting days ahead.

Oohh..ignore, spells, and other craps…have to run now...where???...bathroom...

Later..
