You can tell from a mile that Karisma Kapoor is media shy. When the flashlights go into a tizzy and the boom mikes surround her, you know she'd give her right arm to get out of that situation. Yet, duty beckons. So the Kapoor lady faced the media, for all of eight minutes, when she touched down Bangalore on Saturday afternoon to inaugurate a home furnishing boutique in Koramangala.
One has to hand it to her for looking as good as she does even after two kids and an eight-year sabbatical from films which was broken recently with the dud, Dangerous Ishq.
Dressed in a chic floral blouse and a pair of jeans, Karisma greeted the media with the usual, "I am coming to the city after a long time and the weather is wonderful. It's great to be in Bengaluru; have I pronounced that right?"
The conversation predictably veered towards furniture, since that's pretty much what brought her to the city and Karisma voiced her preferences on interiors. "I like clean lines. It's better not to put bulky things at home because nowadays flats are so small that the dcor should be as minimal as possible. Of course there's nothing like clean, airy rooms," she said.
She suppressed disappointment at her comeback vehicle bombing, saying, "I never really thought about what's going to happen with the film. I wanted my kids to know what it's like to come to the sets. Since I have grown up in the industry and was all of 16 when I started acting, I wanted them to experience that life a bit. I am happy they did. Now my daughter actually asks me, "Are you going for a commercial shoot or a film shoot? They really enjoyed the film. It was the fact of their mom going to work and coming back. Of the four characters I played in Dangerous Ishq, they liked Salma the most as she wore a lot of jewellery."
Currently reading scripts, her next project is a remake of the Amitabh Bachchan Hema Malini blockbuster Satte Pe Satta, in which she will star opposite Sanjay Dutt. "Maybe next year I will do another film. It will be an honour to reprise Hemaji's role. I am waiting to start shooting."
Karisma wasn't the first choice for the film. It was offered to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vidya Balan and came to her only after both rejected it. But Karisma says, "I have done a film like Dil To Pagal Hai, which every actress refused. This trait is a part of my industry. It's quite normal for actors to refuse scripts, it's not a big deal."
As a member of the working mom's club in Bollywood, Karisma says, "It's a great time in Bollywood, for younger actors as well as those who are married. There are so many kinds of scripts and films being made for people of all ages. Once an actor, you're always an actor. You have your fan following. You would always want to be there. When you're married with kids, you're not trying to grab the number one spot. You have been there, done that. Especially with me, today when I work, I look at it as a hobby. There's never any pressure. There's a lot of respect from people around as they are happy to have me on the sets after a long time."
Yet, motherhood puts an embargo on certain kinds of films. "There are different kinds of responsibilities that come with motherhood. When you have children, you don't want to do certain things," she admits.
Meanwhile, she's seen the rushes of her sister's much awaited film, Heroine, and has only this to say: "It's absolutely fantastic. I think it will be an unusual film and I'm waiting to watch it."
While on Kareena, she had to be asked about her sister's impending marriage to Saif. "The inevitable question! When they make an official announcement, I'm sure we'll all celebrate," is her safe reply.
Even as she scurries away from the milling crowd, we can't help but marvel at how gorgeous the 38-year-old looks, with her radiant skin and hourglass bod. Yes, it's the Kapoor genes. But is there anything more to it? "It's a little bit of everything. If you have a positive outlook towards life, lead a healthy lifestyle and do everything in moderation, you're good. Generate positivity and always look at the bright side of life," she said.
It needs cartloads of courage to say that with a thousand watt smile when your marriage is crumbling and your comeback film has sunk without a trace. And just for that, kudos to Kapoor!
