Ek Tha Tiger Day 3 update

After garnering Rs 46-47 crores in it's first 2 days, Ek Tha Tiger has dropped by around 10-15% on the third day of release. The Day 3 collections is likely to be around 13 crores (estimate based on collections at select screens).

The extended weekend will be extremely crucial now and tomorrow (Saturday) the audience-verdict will be clear. If the film picks up tomorrow, then Sunday will be huge. If Saturday remains flat or shows a further drop, then the chances of the film crossing 200 crores will be ruled.
The drop in collections today, could be due to the wide release on Wednesday. The other reason being cited by the trade, is that the muslim audience don't go out to watch films during the Ramadan period.
Update: Boxofficeindia has reported that the collections have dropped by 20% at certain places – "The film should have consolidated on Friday and have similar collections in the 14 – 15 crore nett range but it seems a fall is on the cards as collections coming in at places are 20% lower than Thursday so a Friday fall is certain even if other places hold up better."

There Was a Tiger (Ek Tha Tiger): Film Review

The Bottom Line

Salman Khan dazzles in rollicking — and romantic — Indian action thriller.

Director

Kabir Khan

Cast

Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Girish Karnad, Ranveer Shorey, Roshan Seth

Screenwriters

Kabir Khan and Neelesh Misra

Kabir Khan's thriller -- following an Indian spy and the comely Pakistani enemy agent who falls in love with him -- has already surpassed its high expectations at the box office.

EMERYVILLE, Calif. — There are some things that Hindi films do very, very well — blazing love stories, infectious dance numbers and gloriously splashy star turns.

Mix them up in the wrong concentrations and you have a mess on your hands. But Kabir Khan's Ek Tha Tiger (There Was a Tiger) skillfully blends those elements into a smashing summer movie, complete with beautifully shot foreign locations, superior action and a high-wattage attraction between its two stars,Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.

The patriotic thriller — about an Indian spy (Khan) and the comely Pakistani enemy agent who falls in love with him (Katrina Kaif) — has surpassed even its high expectations at the box office, breaking first-day records with the auspicious confluence of an Eid holiday release and India's Independence Day.

Robust business overseas on more than 110 U.S. screens, and enthusiastic word of mouth, is bound to cement Khan's position as India's top box office draw.

In recent hit films such as Wanted, Dabangg, Ready and Bodyguard, the muscle-bound Khan has cultivated a playfully heroic persona wrapped in a wholesome, all-India package.

His films feature no bad language and only cartoonish violence, and appeal to the broadest spectrum of the mainstream Indian audience. Oh, and he strips to his naked chest in just about every film, a convention that his female fans have come to expect.

Khan's wholesome public image now is in clear contrast to his previous avatar as Bollywood's bad boy: a long list of wrongful acts has tainted the actor's personal life in the past (including charges of hit-and-run drunk driving and of hunting endangered species, both of which were dropped). As the founder of an NGO called the Being Human Foundation, he is now lauded by fans and the industry as an influential philanthropist, which no doubt boosts his credibility in these larger-than-life roles.

In Ek Tha Tiger, Khan plays "Tiger," a spy for India's Research and Analysis Wing (equivalent to the American CIA), who is sent to Dublin, Ireland, to observe an Indian scientist at Trinity College (Roshan Seth) who is suspected of working with Pakistan's intelligence agency.

In Dublin, Tiger meets a young Indian-origin dance student, Zoya (Kaif), and the tough-as-nails spy discovers that he is falling in love for the first time.

Kabir Khan (New York) humanizes Tiger with humorous early scenes in the film showing this bachelor's prosaic day-to-day existence — the man buys milk every morning in his PJs just like everyone else in his Delhi neighborhood, and knows how to cook a mean dal-rice.

As Tiger's relationship with Zoya starts to become dangerous and the mission gets more deadly, director Khan deftly shifts the tone of the film to that of a slick, believable thriller.

Kabir Khan has captured the most colorful sides of his foreign locations in Ireland, Turkey, Cuba, Thailand and India; and he has cast Ek Tha Tiger with strong actors in supporting roles (intenseRanveer Shoreyas Tiger's colleague, and Girish Karnad as his gruff agency boss).

Salman Khan, too, deserves credit for his own shifts in tone from whimsical comic to ruthless spy to vulnerable lover. His onscreen chemistry with Kaif, with whom he has shared a long relationship offscreen, sizzles as well: their Moroccan-themed dance number, "Mashalla," played during the closing credits and choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, is alone worth the ticket price.

Just got back from ETT and I loved it !

Though I did have some apprehensions before the movie started, but once it was rolling I was so into it.

Salman was perfect for this role😳 And his acting was really good. I totally forgot that Tiger was played by Salman, and only saw the character as it was presented. Katrina may not be the best actress around but she's improving I feel. But she was even better in the action sequences 😲 It felt so awesome to see a desi actress do some legit stunts on screen

I never really liked Salman-Katrina pair on screen much, but here I loved watching them 😳 For the first time they looked really natural together with the way they responded to each other etc. I adored the timing of the dialogues of the characters. Especially the comical ones 😆 Ranvir Shorey, though a serious role, he was still fun throughout 😆The action aspect was well taken care of and it was rocking to watch it on screen. The songs looked great as well and the cinematography was really good.

Overall this movie was totally worth the wait for me and I was left yearning for more when it ended 😆😳

Ek Tha Tiger: Theatres ordered to reverse ticket hike

Earlier this month, we told you a majority of multiplexes had decided to hike the ticket prices of Yash Raj Films' Salman Khan-starrer Ek Tha Tiger by nearly 12-16 per cent.

And while raising prices for certain films on special occasions isn't uncommon, they're supposed to come down after the first weekend. In this case, post Monday, August 20. However, most multiplexes will not slash ticket prices until Friday, August 24, which is the day Bela Sehgal's Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi hits theatres.

With areas housing more than one multiplex having seen a 12 per cent hike in ticket prices and those with fewer theatre options having witnessed an almost 16 per cent increase in major cities across the country, the latest decision has infuriated Yash Raj Films. On the night of Thursday, August 16, the production house has dispatched letters to multiplexes and single screens, ordering them to reverse the rates with immediate effect. According to a source close to the film, both Yash and Aditya Chopra feel the current hike in ticket rates of the film is not fair on the common man. Besides, when multiplexes have just slashed their rates because the audience has decreased, how can they again raise them going by a whim. YRF spokesperson confirmed the developments.

However, theatre owners seem to be in no mood to oblige, at least for now. Girish Wankhade, Deputy GM, Corporate Communications and Public Relations, Cinemax India Ltd, said they're not rolling back ticket rates in their chain of cinemas, even from August 20. Anand Vishal, Head of Operations, Fun Cinemas, said, "We will take a call only on Monday. However, we are unlikely to roll back the price in Mumbai at least." Their thoughts are echoed by several other theatre owners who've allocated as much as 95 per cent of their shows for the YRF film. A source from the trade seems to think theatre owners will have no choice but do exactly what YRF wants.
