vidyas success and position in the industry is a hugeee slap on sajid loser khan and shahid wannabe kapoor's face :D

she has a very special place in bwood, beyond all competition, just her own little space. beyond the magazine covers, the numbers game, etc etc

The Dirty Picture Has A Strong Saturday

Sunday 4th December 2011 12.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The Dirty Picture had a strong Saturday and held its collections at high levels all over. The film collected around 9.50 crore nett as per early estimates on Saturday takings its two day business to nearly 18.50 crore nett. Normally a film which is so strong at mass centres on day one that too with high collections is likely to see a fall on day two.

The Dirty Picture managed to show growth as appreciation is good at single screens and multiplexes. Sunday is likely to show good growth and collections could get to around 11 crore nett.

The Dirty Picture is likely to emerge one of the bigger hits of the year.

http://baradwajrangan.wordpress.com/2011/12/04/the-dirty-picture-breast-wishes/

Rangan wants only excerpts to be posted wit link...so here it is

But there's no denying her commitment to the role, and the ferocity with which she tears into it during the first hour. Walking into the film, I just couldn't see her as a sex symbol – to my mind, it was like Meryl Streep playing Marilyn Monroe. But Luthria does something wonderful. In the first few scenes, he lets us glimpse the Vidya Balan we know – and slowly he begins to peel her clothes off. So we literally see this traditionally good-looking girl, with the thilakam and the slightest display of the bra strap through a carelessly thrown-on blouse, transition into a heaving, writhing sex symbol. (Had the film been built on a nonlinear structure, and we'd seen the sex symbol first, we may not have bought it.) In the early portions of The Dirty Picture, Balan makes us laugh at all the actresses who spit out quotes that they "deglamourised" themselves for a role when all they did was wear a sari. Balan does the opposite – she "glamourises" herself – and her slow-growing delight in her discovery of her sexuality, in how her body can affect men, is wonderful to witness. The rest of the film is an often-old tragedy: Reshma becomes Silk, becomes a star, falls in love with the wrong men, and falls into a career and personal abyss.

...

The true feminism in a film like The Dirty Picture is off-screen, in its indication that a major actor today, who could be playing romantic interests for another five years, is not only willing to play these parts but is also finding the films to play these parts in. Even five years ago, we would not have seen frontline actresses like Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan in a 7 Khoon Maaf or The Dirty Picture, flaunting their sexuality in the face of lesser men in the cast. (Balan gets top billing here.) To grow from ingnue to some kind of wasted woman, with a gut oozing out of her tight skirts like cream from a pastry, is no small achievement. But that cannot make a movie. Perhaps they should have jettisoned the other men – or shown them in passing – and concentrated on the complicated relationship between Silk and Abraham (Emraan Hashmi), the arty director who hates her not because of any personal reason but because she represents everything about commercial cinema that he detests. (We could do, though, without the hilariously inappropriate dream song.) But for a large part, his role consists of delivering voiceover lines that are meant to be dryly acidic barbs like the ones delivered by George Sanders in All About Eve (which could have been the title of this film) but end up merely dry. Like most of the film, they're little more than storms in a D cup.😆
