The truth is indian audiences come to see glamour and romance and sexy chicks prance arond. The way to develop the industry is by reeling people in through 'entertainment' and then showing them a product that is BOTH entertaining and engaging on an emotional level which has good acting and something more to bring to the table. TDP isn't sex for the sake of sex, like an item number, its about the softpo*n industry itself and a woman within it.

I agree with this.

and while I agree with the whole skin-show brouht the success thing, I don't entiiirely buy it.
I mean come on, she gained weight. Aaj kal ke standards mein she definitely looks fat in the movie, and that aint a secret or anything. Vidya specifically gained weight to try and represent Silk Smitha's figure, which was her move as a good actress.

i mean if we need to follow this theory, why the heck did Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Aazam flop like a decaying chappal.. Mallika did a crapload of skinshow in that as well haha. adn I mean no homo but come on, she is TONED.

Yes, I get that single screen waali party was wetting its pants even with Vidya's skin show and everything, but why didn't that same single screen party cheer on for Mallika in MGMEA, or Sayali Bhagat in The Train, or heck even that chick in Mujhse Fraandship Karoge who always sports shorts or a bikini or whatever

Good point but it's working both ways.

The skin show is getting audience and the acting is keeping audience...it's touching people's emotions probably. Vidya has some name recognition and she is pretty...she is not a nobody like Sayali Bhagat or Mallika who isn't very pretty in the traditional sense. Now turn Katrina into a good actress and make her act in a movie like DP...the first day will be 20 crores! 😆

Dirty Picture - was amazing Vidya was fabulous in the movie from start to finish and with all the steamy scenes, they were all literally in the first 40 minutes of the movie really... I think the finest scene in the movie was the speech Vidya gave when she won the award - so much truth in it and it totally showed the hypocrisy of Bollywood and the thinking of people... Kind of explained how some people will react to this movie I mean this thread already has the makings of that reaction...

The movie slumped after that scene, basically after the interval. Tushar and Vidya it was needed to show Silk's destruction but otherwise I kind of wished they had focused more on Emraan for the movie... Him and Vidya for the last 30 minutes of the movie was a treat to watch... They were sizzling together, but more hate and gradual love would have been amazing! It would have taken the movie to another level but loved their scene at the beach...

I think credit to Emraan and Vidya, they really allowed you to connect with their characters, so did Naseerudin Shah you really learnt felt the same way Silk would have felt about him... Also loved the way they pointed out the hypocrisy of Bollywood with the media and audience...

I have to give it 3.5/ 5 I think because I was just expecting more from the film, I feel it could have been stronger in places i.e. the middle section cause it started and ended with a bang... but overall it was entertainment entertainment and entertainment,

what a thoroughly entertaining film. a film that lauds the blatant sexuality that vidya oozes out in each and every frame, after her rechristening as silk.

the start of the film was novel. the girl who runs away to claim her share in the fame game is shown entirely in negative film capture. brilliant move that one. the uninhibited girl who loves to shock with her utterances is nuanced perfectly by balan. the turning point of the film is when balan gyrates/makes love to/steams it up with a whip to the tune of nakamukka. the awkwardness, the determination and utter desperation to succeed, the not so perfect dance moves, the overtly in your face pouts and leers, balan owns this scene. kudos to her. ⭐️

naseeruddin has the best one liners in my opinion. he redefines the leech/lech portrayed umpteen times in hindi cinema. he is sexist, has a bloated ego, is a male chauvinist and a superstar to add to it all. after the shy romantic lover of balan in ishqiya, naseer bhai is a delight in a diametrically opposite role.

tushar's turtlenecks are memorable indeed. 😆 as is also his dance to oh la la within the confines of his room. 😆 😆

now emraan hashmi was a surprise to me. i have never liked him as an actor. but he is very good in this movie. he handles the role of the narrator with aplomb. he also has some fantastic lines. the hate love dynamics between silk and abraham becomes a bit skewered towards the end but hashmi holds his own. the chemistry between him and vidya is sizzling. vidya exudes raw sensuality but hashmi gives her competition in that department by showing his legs in teeny tiny shorts in 2 scenes in the movie. 😆 somebody commented thus in the hall where i was watching this film "hashmi, good thighs! 😆😆

after No One Killed Jessica and the plain jane sabrina. vidya does a complete 360 turn and how! she is, according to the trajectory of the script, all at once innocent, spirited, a spitfire, arrogant because of the confidence she has in her sexuality and is generally rivetting and smoking hot! the speech at the award show in a dress that barely covers her bosom is epic! one might think so distracting a dress will take away from the speech but vidya manages to invest so much sincerity and fire in that scene that her words leave an impact, not her ample chest! the scene when she wakes up after the ishq sufiana song is another well crafted affair. silk is slowly walking up to her room and the wall is filled with her pictures. the decline of silk the star is showcased beautifully with the camera filling the frame with the bloated face of silk in a crumpled white shirt juxtaposed against a glamorous photo of hers in her hey day.

thumbs up to the dialogue writer, the character artistes and the production house for this paisa vasool movie. 😃

Masand: 'The Dirty Picture' is eminently watchable

Cast: Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor

Director: Milan Luthria

Vidya Balan goes where few have gone before, putting it all out there, literally, for the sake of her art. Pity it's for a film as unremarkable as 'The Dirty Picture'.

Vidya Balan goes where few have gone before, putting it all out there, literally, for the sake of her art.

At one point in this movie, her character, a titillating dancing star of the 80s, says there are only three ingredients in a film that can guarantee its success: "Entertainment, entertainment, and entertainment." It's a point director Milan Luthria and his writer Rajat Arora seem determined to beat into our heads. For The Dirty Picture seems to have been made specifically to shock you.

All those lured in solely by the promise of skin-show are unlikely to complain. Yet, despite its masala scenes, heavy dialoguebaazi and liberal sexual innuendo, in the final analysis, this film is far from perfect. The Dirty Picture takes an unconventional idea and bakes it in a predictable oven.

What it suffers most from, unfortunately, is lazy writing. With a plot straight out of a Madhur Bhandarkar film, and a screenplay that follows a familiar graph, The Dirty Picture offers a superficial, simplistic view of the seamy, exploitative side of the 80s film business. There is little attempt to treat this material with sensitivity and depth. No sir, this film unfolds as a series of provocative scenes strung together on the strength of their sexually loaded dialogues.

Despite repeated testimonials on the part of its makers that their inspiration isn't Silk Smitha, The Dirty Picture still comes across as a thinly-veiled life-story of the famous South Indian screen siren. In typical filmi fashion, the story opens with Reshma, a village girl, running away to Madras to realize her impossible dreams. Reshma is a Plain Jane, but she wants to be a star. Grabbing an opportunity with both hands, Reshma gyrates seductively in her first break before the camera. She acquires the name Silk, falls into an affair with a much-married superstar, and a siren is born. Her downfall, incidentally, is as quick as her rise – Silk's recklessness makes her overdose on a cocktail of disastrous love affairs, alcohol, bad debts and excess.

Over the course of the film's 2 hours 20 minutes running time, we're introduced to the men in Silk's life. Naseeruddin Shah is expectedly first-rate as the egotistical, ageing superstar Suryakant, who exploits Silk, then cuts her off ruthlessly. Heartbroken, she takes up with his younger brother Ramakant, played by Tusshar Kapoor. This character seems forced into the plot, and Tusshar is miscast, as is evident by a bizarrely comical dance he breaks into, straight out of those Golmaal movies. Emraan Hashmi is appropriately restrained as Abraham, a director who believes in film as art, and who abhors the idea of inserting steamy numbers in his movie to lure in the crowds. His hatred for Silk seems misplaced, and so does his sudden change of heart…and yet he has the most interesting dynamic with the siren. Alas, it's too little too late.

Despite the film's shortcomings, you go the distance for Vidya Balan, who's riveting as Silk. She plays the part with gusto – it's a rare performance, one that's this brave and uninhibited. Vidya pushes the envelope in the way she bares herself both physically and emotionally. Watch how she stops traffic by dancing on the bonnet of a car to disrupt a party she isn't invited to, or the scene in which she saucily lounges naked in a bathtub while giving an interview to a journalist. Vidya's lack of vanity and complete surrender to her craft reinforces why she's miles ahead of her contemporaries.

Alas, one can't muster up the same enthusiasm for the film. For although The Dirty Picture is nicely shot and comes with a foot-tapping score from Vishal-Shekhar, the makers seem too preoccupied with the style and the fashion of those times. The film is refreshingly judgment-free, but leaves you confused about your feelings for Silk in the end – is she a victim, or just someone who made her bed and had to lay in it?

I'm going with two out of five for the film, and an additional one for Vidya Balan alone, which makes it three out of five for The Dirty Picture. It's an average film made eminently watchable by its courageous star. Go on, give her the awards already!
