Do you notice how priyanka chopra is the darkest bollywood heroine? Isn't that a big messed up considering how much color variation there actually IS in India.

Don't say that foreign girls are chosen because people are bored of indian girls, its a racial thing, and its very sad.

but idc what people in the industry think. I care what I think.
why is it messed up that priyanka is the darkest?😕
btw fyi its a free forum and i can say whatever i want.

I might be going off topic as well as intruding, so please only reply if you feel like sharing.

I'm telling you this as a fair skinned indian girl who gets mistaken for being not-indian. People in India treat me better because of my skin color and it is disgusting. I see the privilege's i have gotten as a person in our country when i go there to visit just because i look more white

I read a recent interview of Kalki Koechlin, and to quote her "Growing up as a white-skinned woman in India, I was always the odd one out -- there was a certain alienation that came with that, and you end up alienating yourself because everyone comes to you like the white girl, the easy, "Baywatch," loose-moraled white girl."

I was just wondering if you found that you too where stereotyped in this way?

Prejudice and its consequence 'oppression' is something most people face and will continue in all its forms until people learn to judge people by their hearts and not their forms.

Thanks for your insightful posts.

@ Katalicious

idc what others think and others shouldnt either.
A good philosophy but practice of it incurs a price to pay. In this industry it means a lack of opportunities. Women and men who don't conform to the ideal vision of beauty will invariably find themselves without support, even if they truly don't care what people think of their lack of beauty, even if they don't let it affect their hearts, it will have an effect on their careers. Do you not feel this is unfair? Do you not feel an inclination to make a change for the better? Feel free to disagree.

Uhhh. I understand you can say whatever you want, but you literally can't ignore legit facts for the sake of free speech W*F? Are you being serious right now.

Thats fantastic that you think all people are equal, so do i, but i'm telling you the INDUSTRY doesn't think that way. what do you mean you 'don't care'? I'm so confused. You know this is a huge burden our country is still trying to overcome?

Its messed up that Priyanka is the darkest because a good proportion of Indian girls are darker. Do you understand what i'm saying? Look at our leading actresses:

Kareena, Katrina, Aishwarya, Priyanka, Anushka, etc.

90% of them are fair. Fairer than the average Indian. Thats my point. indians don't want to see normal average colored Indian girls, or darker Indian girls. Because for the past 400 years we've been accustomed to believe that 'the fairer you are the more privileged you are, the prettier you are, etc etc".

Its the same in China, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Nepal, The Phillipines..

Konkona Sen Sharma is like a RARITY in our industry, but even she was unable to be at the top of our industry even though she's a fantastic actress and pretty as well.

You can hold any opinion you want, but you really shouldn't ignore certain truths about the industry as well as India in general.

Hey there. Intruding is always welcomed when one has something important to say :)

But on the being fair in India question, I was treated fantastically by a lot of people but also hated on by several girls in my school. This is another reason why this 'white is beauty' nonsense should stop, it greatly lowers the self esteem of those who arn't particularly light through the media and even what they see in schools and you get disparity within the culture. You have lighter skinned Indians hanging out with lighter skinned Indians. You have lighter skinned indians themselves believing they are 'better'.

its terrible. Whats worse is the 'stereotype' that follows you OUT of the country, especially in Canada. I was totally seen as a floozy and a ditz because i didn't look stereotypically Indian. I constantly felt the need to assert myself intellectually in Indian circles because i didn't want to be dubbed the 'firangi looking chick'.

Its strange, racism works in both ways. Those that are seen as 'less', feel worse and then attack back to those that are seen as 'better'. It is cyclical and un-progressive. Beauty is not confined to any code, it is found in all types of humans.

@ katalicious:

err. I don't think you get it. I didn't 'make you' into the bad guy. I hope someone else will explain this to you as i'm pretty sure you're going to think im 'POUNCING' on you even if i try to explain what i'm getting it.

My ultimate point is, this whole thing though, its a lot bigger than you or me. Its not about what 'you think'. Sometimes you need to know your facts, and if you don't know them, once someone else tells you the truth, you cannot respond with 'I don't care'. That is the definition of ignorance.

You have lighter skinned Indians hanging out with lighter skinned Indians. You have lighter skinned indians themselves believing they are 'better'. That was an eye opener. Excellent tangent argument about how being fair provokes unfairness in some. I have always found it bizarre that people have a certain guruur over gifts bestowed upon them at birth. It is a blessing to be thought of as beautiful by society's standards in that it may makes things easier in some respects, but it is truly an honour to be thought of beautiful through your actions, character and achievements.

its terrible. Hehe, I understand. Double edged sword, not that I am implying that you used your fairness as a weapon. 😆

Its strange, racism works in both ways. Those that are seen as 'less', feel worse and then attack back to those that are seen as 'better'. It is cyclical and un-progressive. Beauty is not confined to any code, it is found in all types of humans. Agreed, for me especially I have found that one jhalak of a person, one act or word can diminish any outward beauty. I have also had those when did he become so handsome moments too.

I don't know if you have heard about micro expressions. Basically, you have the body, that outward jism, and you have the inner character or inner light and beauty. However there is also something inbetween, that is almost undetectable to the naked eye. Our eyes note little nuances of expression, inflections in tones, that reflect a person's true nature or heart. So that no matter how beautiful or fair they appear to be, our heart senses something 'ugly.'

Anyway, thank you for your posts. I am more knowledgeable for having read them. I agree that until we change our understanding, we will remain an uncivilized civilization. Only recently I heard an aunty cussing her daughter in law, using derogatory language in relation to her skin colour.

With love, Sabah

@alittlefaith/sabah: You have some very interesting thoughts, are you by chance a communications/psych major? And yes I have heard of microexpressions! It is fascinating part of our body language, that's awesome that you brought it up. We havn't interacted on here before but I've really enjoyed this little talk, i hope we continue to run into each other.

And i agree, questions of race are important as well as attempting to deal with the often times difficult answers and then educating people enough to rise above prejudice and discrimination. India is such a webwork of different ethnicities and cultures, we should be embracing it, not boxing ourselves in on one type of female.
