Excerpts from the Interview: You already got noticed with 'Meenaxi'. What made you shy away from camera after that? Meenaxi happened and after that I kept waiting for another good film to come my way. But my wait got a bit too long as I received no gleaming offers after that. Then Rang De Basanti came along and I signed the film. But the film also had a delayed shooting. All this made me stay away from camera for long. What did you do in between? I utilized the time in the best possible way by joining some workshops of Naseeruddin Shah and also did theatre with him. There was something happening at the front all the time. That phase of time was a learning experience for me. What made Rang De Basanti interest you? I've worked with Mehra and have learnt a lot from him as an actor. The story of the film sounded interesting. This is a new story made in an innovative way. The settings, the look and the backdrop are very different. The topic that the film revolves around is very fresh. The music is good. It is a film about the youth. There is a balance of fun, drama and emotions, which stirs you.
I'm Aslam and friends with the other boys in the film. He is a middle class boy from Chandni Chowk and among the group has a balanced head. He has a reasonable mind in the sense that he never acts in haste or takes quick decisions. He always ponders over a decision in cool and has the ability to garner favor for his ideas as well. In mid of the extremist group of friends, he is the one who is open-minded. He has a creative hang, as he is a poet and a writer and thinks in a different way. He is the least bit bothered in presenting himself in terms of looks. So throughout the film you can catch him in unmatched clothes and shabby hair. There is an aura about the character that I play. How was your experience working with Aamir Khan? In the process of the film we turned like best friends. Not only me the whole bunch of guys got very well together and so their friendship looks so real in the film. Aamir holds the key to that. Though he is a big star he never made us feel his stardom and gelled very well with all of us. He never had any hang-ups. Even on the screen he gave us space to work on our skills. I just can't believe that I'm working with a person of his stature. How did you feel working with Rakesh Mehra? I'm very much impressed with him. He is absolutely crazy and weird and his wavelength differs from all and this gets reflected in the films that he makes. I had assisted him earlier in 'Aks' and working with the crew was a get together of sorts. I was really pampered by them this time. I knew what his wants and demands were. The film was an enjoyable experience.
This is a film about a group of people who are individuals in their own right. Every character has his identity. Aamir Khan plays the lead while other characters also have pivotal roles to play. There was no way one can overshadow another, as there was no contest among us. All the characters stand out. What kind of film would you like to work in? There is no specific category or genre of films that I would like to work. My criterion is to work in good films specifically. The only thing is that it should interest me. |
