Chillar Party - Movie Review

Unadulterated Fun

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Chillar Party. All the Pamela Andersons and Celina Jaitleys who strip to stop cruelty to animals and whose steamy PETA ads are like magnets to many eyeballs, now have competition from a very unexpected quarter: a bunch of feisty kids in a middle-class housing society in Mumbai.

A tribe of tykes ride on bicycles, congregate in dusty sheds, and steamroll the enemy team on the cricket field. The gang is called Chillar Party and they have a new task at hand: a poor waif Fatka (Irrfan Khan) and his inseparable other half Bheedu (a dog).

Fatka enters the housing society and takes up petty car-washing jobs and comes under the crosshairs of the Chillar Party before securing his place in it by proving his pluck on the cricket field.

All is well in the first half and the audiences are laughing silly at the juvenile gags. But then the film moves onto a somewhat serious terrain as a dog-despising politician vows to clean the city of stray dogs, which means Bheedu, now an inseparable part of the Chillar Party, could soon be cooped and done away with.

That's when the spunky kids decide to take the cudgels for the canine and hoist a banner of rebellion against the cynic and corrupt politician. Their way of protest -- stripping to their undies in public. And they do grab the eyeballs.

Chillar Party is a sweet little film that starts off very well but steers into a bumpy zone in the second half as the standoff between the kids and the politico begins. Of course, there's a message or two squeezed in here by the director duo Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari.

The kids are all right, but it's Fatka, Encyclopaedia and Mottu who stand out. The movie packs in funny moments aplenty, most notable being the ones where the kids begin to imitate Fatka's style.

All in all, a film with a heart and ample humour. Quite canny for Salman Khan to back it as a producer - his first one and surely worth a watch.

Indian Express Ratings: **1/2

A Mumbai housing society is the scene of the adventures of this 'chillar' party which starts out as a super fun ride. A little boy called Fatka (Khan) is the new entrant into this solidly middle-class oasis with its well-appointed flats, big cars, and well-meaning parents overseeing children, homework, and pranks. As his name denotes-- no subtle notes here-- Fatka is the fellow who cleans cars, makes do with just the shirt on his back, and no affection from anyone. Except from his dog, whom he loves to death, and who loves him right back.

A boy and a dog is an irresistible combination, especially if it is a motherless waif and his furry pal. 'Chillar Party', a debut feature produced by Salman Khan, scores high with getting this combo right. Not just Fatka, but the other kids are lively and life-like. This gang, which roams around on shiny bicycles, hangs out in a shed, and treats a cricket game with an enemy team like war, targets poor Fatka by being properly mean. Gangs are seriously clubby affairs, and new members have to prove their worth before being handed out joining rights : Fatka is invited in, but only after he helps wallop the other team, and Bheedu the dog becomes everyone's well-loved mascot.

So far, so enjoyable. Despite the cartoony swipes, and the thundering track underlying every scene, 'Chillar Party' proves that it is entirely possible to make a smart children's film, with good production values, with kids seen to be having a blast. But that's only till the first half . Post interval, when Fatka and Bheedu need to be saved from a local neta who turns out to be a mongrel-hating monster, the film falls into the trap of let's-get-the-message-in, right in your face : child labour is bad, evil politicians are worse, and, of course, children are the best.

And the only way to save the poor boy-and-dog is a highly improbable scheme : for the kids to strip down to their undies, and carry the revolution to the centre of Mumbai, and to the media, and to TV studios. So what this film, which is served to us in the most part with lashings of humour, nice lines, and likeable kids, boils down to is a sea of little boys swarming city thoroughfares in their underpants. Now who's going to do that, even for underprivileged children, and sweet-tempered canines?

"Chiller Party" may be a small film. But as cinema goes, in its adroitness, it is much more mature than 99 percent of the films ever made in India. And that, you'll reckon, is no 'small' achievement.
I would rate it 3.5/5..
it was simply a great movie...

Once upon a dog...

Earlier, all kids could claim their own were the stray films from the government-aided CFSI, and though many of their projects were delightful, their ultra-low budget productions were riddled with inconsistencies and a lack of wide release meant that they just weren't watched by enough people.

But with some of India's biggest stars and production houses backing the genre, much lost ground has been recovered in the last half-decade.

And after Zokkomon and Stanely ka Dabba earlier this year, we have Chillar Party, produced by Salman Khan. He claims that it is by far the best film he's ever been a part of. And you know what? It's entirely true.

Chillar Party is set in a co-op housing colony and almost all the action unfolds here. It is the story of middle-class kids, who after some tussling, accept and befriend a vagabond urchin and his pet stray dog, Bhidu.

Enter a minister Bhide who decides to pass a law to cleanse Mumbai of strays. Despite their parents, the feisty kids choose to retaliate and this escalates into an epic Bhidu vs. Bhide battle.

You can almost sense the effort that's gone into writing the screenplay of CP; there is hardly a redundant scene or really, even a moment. And yet because there are so many kids - Chillar Party is a gang of every imaginable type - and their parents, whose characters are important and characteristics need highlighting, the story seems to unfold leisurely.

This is crucial, because when it turns and establishes itself to be a classic good vs evil tale, you're all but hooked and fully sympathetic to the kids and their cause.

The emotional roller coaster that follows as the hapless kids take on the silver-tongued, bulbous-eyed politician is magical. The cause is simple - save strays, and specifically Bhidu.

For this, the kids have to win over their parents, the society, and indeed, the entire city. They use their own cunning and meager resources to reach a point that Salman Khan would be proud of, ie, stripping down to their underwear to make a point! The dialogue is top-notch and some of the lines the kids utter are little gems in themselves.

Let alone what they say, their energy as they play, fight, dance, and reason with adults is heartwarming and stirring.

Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari have done a marvelous job of directing these tiny tots. How they get such small kids with no experience to hit the mark and keep the camera in focus is beyond comprehension.

At 2 hours 15 minutes CP is perhaps a tad too long, especially with ever- shortening attention spans of the target audience. Also, it tends to be on the edge of crossing the line and becoming preachy in the climax.

Still, Chillar Party deserves high rating because it is a simple story that children will enjoy. That it is an unabashed love letter to dogs only adds to the charm.

There is no heavy message at the end of it. In fact, the film underlines all that is good, principles that children will already be instinctively familiar with. If anything, it's parents that need reminding. So if you're a parent watch this film with your kid. Actually, even if you're not, watch this film.
