Bollywood heaps praise on Salman Khan's Chillar Party

Salman Khan says Chillar Party is the best film he has been part of

After Ready, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is making waves at filmi circuits with his debut production Chillar Party, which is a children's film.

The flamboyant Khan and co-producer Ronnie Screwvala held the premiere of Chillar Party where a lot of Bollywood celebrities were invited. Many who saw the film were left gushing about it.

For starters, Salman Khan tweeted that Chillar Party is by far the best film he has been part of.

"Saw Chillar Party with the chillarrr party . This is by far the best movie that I have ever been a part of. You see it and if you like it publicize it, no better publicity than mouth publicity'and if you don't (like it), rip it apart, you have the rite and no body else," Salman posted on his Twitter page.

Anurag Basu, who has directed films like Murder and Gangster, gave the movie five stars. "***** for Chillar party, brilliant 1st film for Vikas Bahl, in fact better than 10th film of many Directors," Basu wrote.

Amrita Rao said films like Chillar Party do justice to the silver screen. "I'm proud of All & every1 associated with Chillar Party! Finally films dat do justice to the Silver Screen! Chillars U were such naturals."

Director Rohan Sippy too was effusive in his praise for the film. "Chillar Party is great- very very funny, kids & the dog are brilliant- a film with real heart:)"

Arshad Warsi took his son and his many kid friends with him to the premiere."'Watched Chillar Party last night... Sweet film, full of good gyaan n a whole lot of laughs, took 18 kids with me they all had fun," Warsi wrote.

Arbaaz Khan wasn't at the premiere but had already seen the film at IIFA in Toronto. "I saw it at the Iffa screening in Toronto. Its a fun film :) A must watch for kids , its a family entertainer with a strong message. Wish Salman and the team of Chillar party all the success !!!"

Director Bejoy Nambiar too gave a thumbs up to the film. "Chillar Party !! Super feel good film. Vikas Behl - Mann Behl gaya. The kids were just adorable."

Can't take it anymore. There was a time all his movies were floping left and right. Then I liked him, now why are all his movies doing good? I think kitti was not lucky for him, since she went out of his life, his movies are starting to do good.

Chillar Party is a small film with a big heart where a kiddo gang shows more maturity than the adult species and a stray dog inspires you to be human.

The film opens with each child character being individually introduced through their traits, helping you familiarize with the Chillar Party from Chandar Nagar society. When Fatka enters the society as a domestic help with his mutt-mate Bhidu, after the initial friction, the boy and his dog become inseparable members of the kiddo gang.

Soon a scheming politician comes up with a drive to get rid of stray dogs from the city which endangers the life of Bhidu. The society members want Fatka to leave with his dog but the Chillar Party stands up in support of their friend. Together they attempt every possible trick from signature campaign, chaddi march to spreading public awareness to save their friends.

The reason Chillar Party connects with you instantly is because it is honest and has its heart in the right place. The child actors are neither sugary sweet nor cacophonously cranky. They are pleasantly natural and absolutely believable. The chemistry and charm of the society kids bring back memories of Mani Ratnam's Anjali (1990). Every kid in Chillar Party has an interesting characterization that gives them a unique identity.

Writer-director Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari attempt to delve into the psyche of the child protagonist and thereby we get to see the entire film from the children's viewpoint. The writing is imaginative exploring both, the naughty and the innocent side of nascent years. Scenes showing the society kids being influenced by Fatka's tapori lingo or the ones where the Chillar Party is trying to get a grip on news headlines are hilarious.

But while it primarily works as a fun film, Chillar Party has some very poignant moments that bring a lump in your throat. The scene in initial reels where Fatka is in search of his dog and their subsequent reunion can make the stonehearted go soggy. The unadulterated camaraderie amongst the kids and their selfless solidarity simply touches your heart. Also the heroism that they exude is so endearingly effective as compared to the synthetic bravery of adult actors.

On the flipside, the narrative becomes slightly contrived in the second half as the innocence of the young minds is somewhat diluted with too much planning coming into picture. The entire call-for-revolution through the children chaddi march, despite adorable, remains peripheral to the plot and doesn't directly affect the dog dilemma. Further the climactic encounter of the children with the politician on a chat show appears rather random and superficial. And while this children's film refreshingly refrains itself from getting preachy or melodramatic till this extent, it sadly falls prey to it in the penultimate moments.

While all the kids are natural and charming, Naman Jain as Jhangiya, the kid who doesn't wear underwear, is the scene-stealer. He gets some of the best scenes and best lines in the film and entertains the most. Irfan Khan as Fatka is perfect in his part. His bonding with the dog seems so real that it makes the viewer readily relate to the central conflict of the film. Sanath Menon as Encyclopedia, the mastermind in the group seems somewhat rehearsed for his mature-than-his-age character but is, nevertheless, charming. Chinmai Chandranshuh as the unlucky Sardar kid Lucky Singh is funny. Rohan Grover as Akram, the team captain is confident and dances amazingly well. Aarav Khanna as Aflatoon, Vishesh Tiwari as Second Hand and Divji Handa as Shaolin are cute.

Chillar Party is a perfect example of how a children's film need not be childish. Unmissable for children and must-watch for adults!

There is no denying that being two young and debutant directors, there would be last minute jitters going on in their minds. Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari, the co-directors of upcoming flick Chillar Party have no qualms in admitting that they are indeed very nervous. They are up against Murder 2, the sequel of the hugely successful Murder from Vishesh Films, that also releases this Friday. And, the two are well aware of the fact that any kiddie film releasing these days will be immediately compared with Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par - a film that has been given an almost cult status among children's movies by critics and movie buffs alike.

Vikas says, "Friday is upon us, and we are very, very nervous." They don't want to predict which way the wind will blow right now and instead say, "It is too early to say anything. But, the way the promos are generating buzz, it looks good."

Despite their nervousness, Vikas and Nitesh emphasise on one thing - that their movie should not be compared to Taare Zameen Par, at all. Together they say, "It is our request to the audience to go watch Chillar Party without bringing into the picture any movie from the past." Nitesh emphasises, "Do not expect a Taare Zameen Par from us!" Vikas takes the conversation ahead as he explains, "Chillar Party is a very different film. It is not a kiddy film at all. There is no guy slipping on banana peels or anything like that. It is a real film where you can almost empathise with the characters. Our film is for the masses!"

With Salman Khan coming on board as co-producer, the picture looks rosier definitely. With a starless cast in the film, the two directors could not have hoped for a better launch-pad. "The advantage starts even before the credits start rolling at the beginning of the film. With the two month-long publicity that's been going on will make all the difference." With a moment's pause, they point out together, "The country will watch Salman's attitude through this film."

Chillar Party is the story of a group of children who take on a local politician to raise a voice against the injustice meted out to one of them.

Everytime i see desigirl post something i immediatley hear the song in my head. It is uncontrolable. lol.

On topic: I probably wont see this film but i think its heart is in the right place. I like that movies are being made for the kids that arn't confined to just cartoons or something really silly. It seems like a very "Dennis the Menace" type of film. Its kind of cool, i hope it does well!

I'd said this before and I'd like to repeat it here: If you don't have a star in your film, the story of your film better be the star attraction, the champ. CHILLAR PARTY may be backed by star names, but it doesn't have a 'star' to call the shots. Thankfully, the story of CHILLAR PARTY does the talking!

Children's films are rarely attempted in Bollywood, though film-makers often talk of luring not just adults but also kids when they plan a film project. Post KACCHA LIMBOO and STANLEY KA DABBA, CHILLAR PARTY attempts to focus entirely on kids. Eight kids stand up to a mighty politician, their mission is to save a dog that belongs to an urchin who's part of their group. The film actually advocates a message in the garb of entertainment: Children can bridge the class difference that's prevalent in the society. Honest intentions, indeed!

I've often felt that children are more impulsive, more courageous and have a completely non-manipulative approach towards life, unlike adults, and it is this quality that makes them take on the odds head-on. CHILLAR PARTY depicts the courage with which they stand up against their parents and also a powerful politician to fight for a just cause. The cause is most noble and if you're a dog lover [like me], you'd simply want to be one with the kids in this agitation and fight the unscrupulous politician tooth and nail. And that's precisely why CHILLAR PARTY works. It evokes the right feelings. It knocks on your conscience.

CHILLAR PARTY is not just meant for kids, but also grownups. Besides, as a film, it changes the perception that kiddie films in India tackle childish issues. This one, in fact, tackles a sensitive issue that plagues our society. Also, as a story, the film has its moments that make you emotional and euphoric, when the kids win the combat.

CHILLAR PARTY tells the story of a gang of innocent but feisty kids who lead a carefree and fun-filled life in Chandan Nagar Colony. Soon, Fatka and his pet Bheedu come into their lives and they become an inseparable part of the Chillar Party. The lives of these kids get difficult when Bheedu's life is endangered, thanks to a mean politician. How they take on the mighty opponent in their own way forms the crux of the story.

Unlike KACCHA LIMBOO and STANLEY KA DABBA, CHILLAR PARTY doesn't get into the serious zone, although it does tackle a serious issue. That's because directors Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl balance the dramatic portions with light moments admirably. At the same time, the film retains the innocence that one expects from films that have kids enacting principal and pivotal characters. Right from the time when the kids and the urchin have issues with each other to taking up cudgels against the wrong-doers, a number of sequences involving the kids have that certain spark that cannot be described in mere words.

The sole flaw is the placement of Ranbir Kapoor's song in the film. It's wrongly placed after the end credits. What a waste, since the viewers would've only made an exit by then.

Directors Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl have handled several moments with expertise. Drawing as good as real performances from the kids is an arduous task indeed and you need to hand it to the duo for not only choosing the right set of actors, but also making them look convincing in their parts. Also, I'd like to make a note of the dialogue spoken in the enterprise. It's exactly like the way we hear kids speaking in real life.

Every kid in the film pitches in a winning performance - Jhangiya [enacted by Naman], Shaolin [Divij], Enclyclopedia [Sanath], Silencer [Vedant], Aflatoon [Aarav], Panauti [Chinmay], Toothpaste [Sherya], Akram [Rohan], Second Hand [Visshesh] and Fatka [Irfan Khan]. It would be unfair and unjust to single out just one of them. As a matter of fact, you just can't help but fall in love with each of them. Ditto for the supporting actors, who enact the role of the parents and also the conniving politician.

On the whole, CHILLAR PARTY is not just for kids, but for grownups as well. A story of grit and determination, it works not just as an entertainer, but also advocates a message rather strongly. A film that deserves to be tax-exempted so that it reaches out to a wider audience. A small film with a gigantic spirit... Encourage this one!
