Day 28: A film that my parents love

Star Wars

I think my parents and grandmother are responsible for my love for movies. Thanks to my parents, I watched a lot of movies growing up. There are plenty of movies that I love because they watched it often and I watched with them. But one I'll pick for now is the Star Wars Trilogy. There were not many fantasy fiction films in those days. Of course there was Star Trek on television. But Star Wars was something else.

I'm also an original trilogy purist. Now they created some memorable characters. As a little kid I loved the furry creatures. I adored Ewoks and went 'yub yub' like them all the time. I wanted an Ewok. Oh and who can forget Chewy, the big furry softie. In my later teen years I started to notice Han Solo's rouge smile and totally get why the ultimate geek fantasy is the Princess Leia slave outfit on Jabba's barge.

The best part of watching the films as a kid was, I don't think I really understood incest. I preferred Luke. He so much sweeter, nicer and has dreamy eyes. I thought he and Leia went perfectly well together. I always rooted for them to hookup. Now even though I am aware, I still want them to. My theory is "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, they didn't care about incest like we do"

I just realized RTH is almost done, which means I will have to go through by myself. How exciting 😛

day 20 - a film that has one of the best soundtrack

Music is my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness. I love love music. I am a music fanatic and my life revolves around music for most of it. I would've picked Veer-Zaara had RTH not picked it. The music of Veer-Zaara is what feelings sound like. The music of VZ gives you this magical feeling 😊. However, it's so hard to pick just one. But I've chosen the music of the film, Roja for many reasons that words can merely express.

Yeh bandhan hai pyaar ka dekho toote na sajni
Yeh janmon ka saath hai dekho chhoote na sajna,
Tere aanchal ki chhaaon ke tale meri manzil mujhe mil gayi
Teri palkhon ki chaaon ke tale mohaabat mujhe mil gayi...

It was a life time experience. Some of them are rare collectibles now. esp the ones from the 90's. I had buzz light year action figure back in the days. I'm sure I still have it.

Day 29: A film I would remake

I think the hardest thing to make is a feel good light comedy. It is really difficult to take something simple, ordinary and down to earth yet elevate it to something everyone is excited about. Back in the day Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee made some of Indian cinema's most enjoyable films. The beauty of these films was how they transformed the common man, forgotten communities to something enchanting on screen.

Rohit Shetty butchered this film. I'm not sure if I trust Bollywood to remake it. And even though Hollywood has the original and duplicate Yours mine and Ours, I'd like to remake this movie in Hollywood with a contemporary twist. The movie has a great message about family and the pitfalls of materialism that would strike a chord in todays economic times as well.

It won't be the cliche New York, Chicago, San Francisco. I'd set it in either the south or the Midwest. I'd focus immigrant or ethnic minority families in impoverished neighborhoods and try to give an authentic cultural flair. Through the plot I'd touch about current challenges like lay offs, unemployment, foreclosure, student loans and maybe even the hot potato of illegal immigration. I'd highlight contemporary class divides and racial divides in the United States.

Totally cheesy, but it will be my film for the 99%

day 21 - a film of your fav director you love

Oh lord, I'm thinking.. and I've been thinking for the past 30 minutes. I really don't have a fav. director I suppose. I think I'm gonna pass this and since I will not be doing my tomorrow's, might as well do it today!

day 22 - a film that could've had potentials for bigger achievements

I love this movie, but nothing outta the norm is ever accepted in Bollywood. I don't know if I should blame the industry itself, or blame the masses. However, this movie has so much potential that it's sad to see such good talents being wasted and critically panned down!

Day 30: My favorite film this time last year

This is an easy one. One June 7th 2011, I watched X-Men First Class, and that time it was my favorite movie of the year. It was a pretty awesome movie.

Day 31: A book I want adapted as a movie

Wicked: The life and times of the wicked witch of the West

Not an adaptation of the musical (which would be awesome in its own right) but the original book by Gregory Maguire. The real story of Elphaba. A movie with the tale of her birth and the licentious affairs of her mother Melena. Her education in Shiz and the unlikely friendship with Galinda. Her rebellion against the Wizard and her affair with Fiyero. Her guilt ridden years with Sarima the widow of Fiyero. Finally her death at the hands of Dorothy.

What I love about Wicked is how it turns the tale of Oz upside down. You actually feel sorry for Elphaba. The book delves deeply into philosophical questions on wickedness. I think it would make a great movie on its own.

day 23- your favorite documentary film?

Inside Job

Great documentary on the financial crisis and the corruption in the United States. It's thought provoking so give it a shot if you're anything into politics.

day 24 - a film that makes you feel guilty

The Painted Veil.

This movie was initially a little slow, however it sticks out like a sore thumb every time I think of it because it makes me realize how I sometimes make myself or my job a priority; forgetting people who love me. While watching the movie, I also realized what we take for granted today can only be gone tomorrow. It made me feel guilty in a way that for once, I felt like a human with emotions. I started to look beyond my ego and break the wall I build to keep people out. It still makes me feel guilty for a lot of things... alas. Slow, but a well played film.
