Day 10 - A Film that Makes You Fall Asleep
Patiala House

Lots of films make me fall asleep if I don't like them, but the most recent one has to be Patiala House. I saw this a few days ago and it was so boring I could not help myself and slept. When I woke up, the movie was still on so I just turned it off. 😆 Really slow and boring. I understood the basic concept of the movie through its promos however its like one of those movies that should not get released in theaters but in television instead.

Triiipplee post ! I keep skipping indiaofrums on the weekends.
day 16 - a film that you used to love but now dislike
Garden State
mmm i watched this when i was 13 i think, i thought it was the best movie ever, i loved the soundtrack and would constantly reccomend this movie to people. Re-watching it now years later it's pretty hilarious. Its very purposely 'independent' and appealed to an audience of kids who were indie-snobs (me at 13 lol) and believed themselves to be "different". It's not a very well made movie at all and sort of rides on good music not exactly a good script. I've also grown to absolutely hate Zach Braff. (still has a great soundtrack though)

day 17 - a film that you hear often people talk about
Aitraaz
I think Akshay and Priyanka are in the movie, and she played a villain in it? She always talks about her role in the film and ive seen people mentioning it here and there. It looks like a movie i'd probably side-step but maybe i'll watch it someday..

day 18 - a film that you wish people would talk about
Dil Se.
I still believe this was Shah Rukh's best role, and was a really important film in our industry. I wish it was brought up more and more credit was given. It's Prety's first film and she was so believable in the role she played, the same goes with Manisha as well.

day 17 - a film that you hear often people talk about:

Most popular films like DDLJ, HAHK. Even the old ones that get mentioned are quite popular like Chupke Chupke (Mr. Bachchan/Dharmendra), Jaane bhi do yaaron, Golmaal (Amol Palekar).

These days? Bridesmaids. I loved it too. It's not a shallow chick flick. It's real fun, raunchy film with real female characters.

day 18 - a film that you wish people would talk about:

Though I'm glad that the line that separates art house cinema and mainstream is almost extinct and off-beat cinema is gaining popularity, I still am a huge fan of India's Parallel cinema movement. I wish more people discussed it when they go on their nostalgia trip.
Garm Hawa, Ek Doctor ki maut, Suraj ka Satvan ghoda to name a few, also, some of the best films in India (that's also bestowed the prestigious awards at International film festivals) is made in Bengali-Malayalam-Marathi industry. It's sad that we miss out on some of the best literature and cinema due to language constraint. Subtitles and translations rarely do justice.

^ Have you seen Harishchandrachi Factory? I completley agree with you on the language barrier, there are so many wonderful alternative films that get released every year in several states, i can see that things are changing now though, audiences are more open to art films as well as films in different languages, even the younger generation.

^ Masakaliii: Yes, I have.

It's sad that a film like Adaminte Makan Abu doesn't get public release till it's conferred National Award. Now it's releasing soon, there's public interest and read that SRK is planning to remake it in Hindi. It's time we see real Muslim characters in main lead too.

^ Their remaking it? I really don't like remakes, especially mallu film remakes. A simple language dub or subtitling would be adequate. also SRK doing the lead in that movie? No. Christ, no.

It was a wonderful film.. *Harishchandrachi Factory*. I saw it at a screening in LA, where the director was present and there was a short discussion after the movie. It was during the time, it was being lobbied for the Oscars.

The director had almost a similar story as his film, on how he tried to make this movie for several years.

I so agree on so many good movies *lost in translation*.

Another movie I watched over the weekend finally was *Udaan*.

It was one of the best movies, so far in terms of storytelling and characterisation. One thing, I realized as I watched the movie was, kids give the best expression, when they are quiet. The young kid, Arjun, had so few dialogues but his body language and smile and tears told all. And the elder brother Rohan and his father's equation was explored quite well along with his chacha. Overall a good movie. I have no idea, how did it fare commercially in India though.

Dubbing or subtitling also doesn't work at time, some scenes make sense as they have a history attached or a cultural jargon related, but when they sub/dub it..it feels out of place 😕 Remakes lose the charm, specially if the director copies every scene literally, instead of molding it into the local flavour 😆

Manchitrathazhu lost all its charm in the form of Bhool Bhulaya(it made me wonder if Priyadarshan was trying to make a spoof). Chandramukhi n Aapthamitra were still OK
