This question has been bugging me for a long time...well since Natalie portman won the best actress at the Oscars. Is the Oscars Really better than Filmfare?

Back to Natalie Portman...So I have watched Black Swan...and didn't think her performance was an Oscar worthy. 😕

There are seems to be a lot of controversies around if she deserves it or not. Even the fact that some of the performances she has done in the film was a body double. 😕

Here is an article I found online:

Great Oscar debate: Is Natalie Portman overrated?

Was she too frigid in "Black Swan"? Who should really win best actress? Salon's critics discuss

Andrew O'Hehir and Matt Zoller Seitz

Here is a comment I find interesting:

What I've concluded from watching the Oscars is that it's an event that honors the industry. The voters choose people who best represent the industry. That's why the Academy tends to favor big films over small ones.

Only critics have the luxury of choosing the best "performance."

The question comes down to which actress best represents her industry.

BTW, I thought Portman was terrific along with Clive Owen in "Closer."

To bring it back to Bollywood
: So if Natile Portman can win an oscar, can actress like Kareena, PC, and Vidya win one too? I mean if you watch Natalie portman performance in Black Swan, she has not done nothing greater than what these actress have already done. I think Kareena in Chameli, PC in Aitraaz, and Vidya in Ishqia are way better performances than what Natile did in Black Swan.

Okay, I'm one of those people who think that Natalie did not deserve the oscar. But her acting is no way comparable to any of Kareena or PC's recent performances.

Am glad someone agrees. I haven't really seen any of NP's performances...so don't really know of her acting power, but she did not impress me at all in Black Swan. And eraser, I was just comparing her performance in Black Swan to that of Vidya, and bebo and PC's peformances...not other NP's performances. Since it's Black Swan that got her the award.

Natalie Portman not deserving an Oscar is sort of your personal opinion. Respect that. Having said that, her performance in Black Swan is way ahead of comparison to our contemporary Bollywood actresses. With due respect to our film industry, the complexity of the character and the story of Black Swan is way above the level and quality of films we have in Bollywood right now. So i wouldn't go as far as to put her performance in such low levels. You can see how much she had to put into that film, not to forget the fact that she isn't even a proper ballet dancer. Although the way the film was shot hid most of Portman's imperfect ballet skill's ( notice how they rarely capture her full body shot when she's dancing on her toes! ) , she still conveys all the emotions while trying to maintain a perfect ballet posture. That is one tough job. Her performance makes the film work.

Well i don't know if she was more deserving than other actors nominated alongside her, but she scores way better than any of the current Bollywood actresses.
But this is completely my opinion! we can agree to disagree!😊

LMFAO I'm just going to say, PC and Kareena cannot do ballet nor even come close to Natalie Portman. I really liked her in that wal-mart movie, "Where the Heart Is"

Oscars have a set rule for giving awards away. They prefer either giving it to the veterans who have been snubbed every prior year or to a relatively young actress/actor with a breakout performance. Natalie falls into the latter category. I'm not surprised. Anne Hathaway was also nominated for Rachel Getting Married few years ago (mediocre performance IMO) for the same reason.

Having said that, despite the biases they have...comeon they put more logic into giving their awards away than the bollywood awards. Bollywood awards are clearly bought...event the aam junta seems to be aware of it these days. 🤪Any aira gaira gets an award. Its not even funny anymore.

Our National Awards work that way. Dharmendra is getting this year's Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Finally huh? Its never too late. I guess the underlying bias is the same everywhere.😆 I rolled my eyes when Alan Arkin finally received an Oscar. Poor guy was snubbed for so many years despite great performances.😕

^ ^There's still bias because I don't see many regional actors/filmmakers being conferred with the same award. It's so Bolly-centric esp. in the past few years.

Well certain movies I felt were not oscar worthy..american Beauty??? it won so many awards, but I felt the movie was just like any other desperate housewives sitcom! Slumdog millionaire also was too hyped..I liked the concept of the movie but the ending ruined it for me esp..the bollywood jig..atleast they could had made use of some good choreography, like sound of music, the music and choreography was breathtaking!!
