Rajeev's Rules to Rule
Comment Print Email

Share

There are a few unwritten rules of making it as an actor in the Hindi film industry. They are not broadcast but every struggler worth his struggle knows them, as I'm sure Rajeev Khandelwal must have too. Yet he didn't abide by any.

Tune into Headlines Today on Saturday,
October 1, at 7.30 pm and Sunday, October 2, at 12.30 pm to watch the show

Rule no # 1 - if you don't come from a film family then start hustling for that big break as soon as you outgrow you adolescent acne. Rajeev made his debut at the not-so-pubescent age of 27.

Rule no # 2 - come from a film family. If nothing else at least have some claim to be a mooh bolla distant relative of a Kapoor or a Khan. Rajeev is an army child whose parents had no filmi connections and discouraged him so much that he didn't even have the guts to make it direct to Bombay from Jaipur, he made a pit stop for a few years closer home in Delhi.

Rule no # 3 - stay away from television soaps if your final goal is to be a hero on the big screen. Apart from SRK no one has made that transition successfully in the past and Shah Rukh is a) unique b) destiny's child c) was an instant rage on TV long before the saas bahu era ate into our remaining brain cells. Rajeev debuted on an Ektaa Kapoor soap and stayed on the idiot box for six years before giving it up for film. Admittedly, his chiseled jaw got the aunties panties in a twist but if you didn't watch TV, you didn't know of him.

Rule no # 4 - ensure your debut is a huge budget romantic film. He refused many a popcorn role with top "lecherous" (you'll have to watch the show to get that reference) directors before opting for a first time director's small budget, hard-hitting, issue-based film, it's another story that that film went on to become a cult block buster.

Rule no # 5 - once you deliver a hit then you quickly sign films with big production houses or at the least bag a number of prestigious endorsements so that you are always in sight. Rajeev being Rajeev went underground and off the radar choosing to come back a year later as TV host for a controversial game show.

I could go on and on but I think you get the picture - Rajeev made and continues to make his own rules. The fact that he has done 3 films in as many years is not because of a lack of offers or because he's lazy, it's simply because he wants to cherry-pick projects that will fulfill him as an actor and that'll allow him the freedom to live like a "commoner" the rest of the time.

Tune into Headlines Today this Saturday 1st October at 7.30 pm and Sunday at 12.30 pm to watch the reticent Rajeev talk about women, casting couch and how he finally built the nerve to ask a girl (now his wife) for her number.

Court upholds government notice on TV reality show

New Delhi, Sep 30 The Delhi High Court Friday upheld the show cause notice the information and broadcasting ministry issued to Star Plus channel for its telecast of two episodes of the controversial TV reality show ''Sach Ka Saamna'' in 2009.

New Delhi, Sep 30 The Delhi High Court Friday upheld the show cause notice the information and broadcasting ministry issued to Star Plus channel for its telecast of two episodes of the controversial TV reality show 'Sach Ka Saamna' in 2009.

Justice S. Muralidhar turned down the plea of Star India Private Ltd., and said that the content shown in the programme was 'vulgar, indecent and against good taste and decency', violating the programme code prescribed under the cable television network rules.

'There appears to be little doubt that the programme did violate the rules. In view of this conclusion, the warning administered to Star Plus channel by the ministry was justified as a valid exercise of statutory power by the regulatory authority,' the court said.

The court also took note of the fact that the channel had placed an advisory and run scrolls and tickers during the telecast of the programme that the overall content of the show was adult in nature and not fit for unrestricted public viewing.

The court was hearing a writ petition filed by the channel against the ministry's Nov 27, 2009, show cause notice, which stated that the telecast/re-telecast by the channel of a programme titled 'Sach Ka Saamna' July 17 and 21, 2009, was vulgar in nature.

On Feb 10, 2010, the channel approached the court seeking direction to the government not to interfere in the broadcast of the second season of its controversial TV show.

The broadcaster pleaded before the court to stay the notice issued by the ministry which alleged that the show violated the programme code.

The channel said that the TV show was adapted from a widely watched international show titled 'The Moment of Truth', viewed in India and over 20 other countries.

It said that 'The Moment of Truth' was first broadcast in India in 2008, through a sister channel STAR World.

Makers claim to have delayed Soundtrack release for Soha Ali Khan

The Pataudi family has never felt more closely-knit together. Having come to terms with their loss, they are now in Delhi looking after Sharmila Tagore, who is down with a viral fever, and making arrangements for a memorial service on Saturday for the late Nawab Pataudi. Many of Saif, Kareena, and Soha's friends from Bollywood are expected to fly into Delhi on Saturday for the memorial.

Curiously, the Bollywood brigade is being uncharacteristically discreet about sharing the Pataudis' grief. Said a prominent star, "I am going on Saturday and a lot of others are, I believe. But it's a private moment of condolence and grief."

It's been a tough fortnight for Soha Ali Khan. She was in the middle of promoting her new film Soundtrack when he father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi had to be hospitalized. Bravely, the daughter continued with her nationwide promotion.

And then the worst happened. Soha Ali Khan's father passed away leaving her too broken to even think of the film.

The film's producers from Saregama and director Neerav Ghosh had two options. Either to go ahead with the promotion of the film without Soha or postpone the release.

They opted for the latter option and chose not to talk about their postponement as some sort of a sacrifice. The official reason given for the postponement was too many releases on September 30.

Says the director Neerav Ghosh, "Ha, it was certainly not the crowd of releases that bothered us. Because we've gone from one clutter to another the following week. No. It was Soha. All of us, me, Rajeev Khandelwal, Mrinalini Sharma and Soha have become one closely-knit family. And if one of us is in distress, the rest of us can't go on normally. We definitely postponed because of Soha's bereavement."

The decisive moment came in Delhi when the Soundtrack director was live on air with Soha on the day the Nawab Pataudi passed away. "It was ghoulish. We were in a segment promoting our film. During the break we could hear them loudly talking about Soha's father. To her credit, Soha was very composed. But we decided, that was it. We decided to put aside the film until she was ready to face the world and her work again."

Neerav has been in touch with Soha. She will join the promotion of the film from next week after the memorial service. For those who wish to be present, the memorial service for Nawab Pataudi is on October 1 at the Chinmaya Mission, Lodhi Road, Delhi, from 4-5 pm.
