Update: 'Patiala House' maintains well on Monday
- By Taran Adarsh, February 15, 2011 – 16:19 IST
PATIALA HOUSE is not only faring well in North India [Delhi-U.P., Punjab], but is maintaining a steady run in Mumbai circuit as well. The Mumbai circuit figures are as follows:- Fri 1.60 cr, Sat 1.80 cr, Sun 2.40 cr and Mon 1.28 cr.
Patiala House' wins appreciation; looks at adding on collections |
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, February 15, 2011] |
It was always expected that 'Patiala House' would start on a lower note since it wasn't projected as a quintessential entertainer that one usually associates with Akshay Kumar. However the team of 'Patiala House' was in for a rude shock with the film opening only around 30%-40% across the country. This was even lesser than the low expectations one had as the first day read a mere 4 crores.
However there was respite round the corner with the collections showing a reasonable (if not mammoth) escalation as the weekend progressed. There were two reasons for that. First and foremost the film has been made for classes which meant that family footfalls could be expected only on Saturday and Sunday. Secondly, for Akshay Kumar and Nikhil Advani, it was a challenge to entice audience into stepping in theaters all over again after 'Chandni Chowk To China'.
Nevertheless, all around positive reviews and good word of mouth for 'Patiala House' ensured that some damage control was taken care of with weekend closing around the 16 crore mark. Of course one expects a higher total for an Akshay Kumar starrer but given the fact that the film was always meant to be a word of mouth affair rather than a quick earner over the weekend, 'Patiala House' has found some stable ground for itself.
A lot would now depend on how the second weekend performs as it would be crucial to decide the eventual fate of the film. Though low cost of making and the prices at which it has been sold would ensure that coverage is not an issue, 'Patiala House' would be aiming for bigger gains. Reason being that it is after years that Akshay Kumar has seen unanimously positive reviews coming his way (last one remembers is 'Namaste London'). Also for Nikhil Advani, it is no less redeeming as after 'Chandni Chowk To China', he has seen a complete turnaround in fortunes for him as far as reputation gains are concerned.
Other releases of the week - 'Angel' and 'Aashiqui.in' - didn't even find a proper release for themselves. Released at only a few screens and that too in scattered centres in some parts of the country, these small time films didn't even gain any visibility for themselves, let alone being reviewed positively or negatively. Going completely unnoticed, these nameless affairs were disasters from day one itself.
Bijis, Baujis, Bhangra and Fast Bowling
Patiala House
Director: Nikhil Advani
Starring: Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Usman Qureshi
Rating:
Bijis, baujis, bhangra. It's a tried and tested formula that doesn't always work. But add to it Bollywood's new favourite Punjabi kudi Anushka Sharma and lots of cricket on the eve of the cricket World Cup and it's a surprisingly watchable movie. Ah yes it hasAkshay Kumar but director Nikhil Advani has very wisely disguised that fact by giving him minimal dialogues and maximum fast bowling (Akshay does look good bowling flat out).
And thank God for it. Akshay plays the strong silent suffering type, Parghat Singh Kahlon, who gave up his dream of playing for England because his father, the self-appointed sarpanch of Southhall, thinks all goras are evil (yes shades of Amrish Puri in everyone's favourite Punjabi film, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge). There's his father Rishi Kapoor, who is trapped in 60s England where the English are racist and the Indians don't own half of Kensington. And his mother Dimple Kapadia, the equally silent type, who doesn't utter a word as her son's dream of playing for thegoras (England) is cruelly quashed.
Anyway to cut a long story short, Gattu (for that is Akshay's nickname in the movie) meets the spunky Anushka Sharma, who ran away briefly to try and become a heroine in Bollywood. Now she cuts hair in a saloon and lives with her friend's 12-year-old cricket mad son. She makes Akshay believe anything is possible–even wearing tight T-shirts, shiny blazers, drinking shots and dancing to Punjabi rap (yes, it's that sort of a movie where the lead stars discover themselves only under influence–cue Kal Ho Naa Ho and Namaste London).
There's an army of other minor stars, who all play various chachajis, chachijis, and bachchajis. And there's an even larger army of cricketers, from West Indies' Kieron Pollard to Australian Andrew Symonds and Dirk Nannes. Former players Nasser Hussain, David Gower and Graham Gooch play English selectors. The point of the movie is to bring Master Akshay back to the crease to play for England 17 years after he gave up his dream to run a shop in Southhall. Master Akshay will of course achieve it and help England win the T-20 World Cup but not before various things happen–Hard Kaur is transformed from bhajan singer to rapper, Anushka Sharma proves yet again why she is the brightest spark among the younger actresses and Akshay proves that less is more when it comes to his acting.
Everyone eats rajma chawal, hopes for a Yash Copra wedding, has an alter ego, and Akshay gets a chance to say his one big speech–this one is about aap jee sakte hain, hamen to sirf saans lene ki permission hai. With lines written in Yash Chopra land–kal chup ek biwi thi, aaj bol ek maa rahi hai; and gaaliyon ka shor taaliyon main chhup jayega–and enough cricket to keep the kids happy, this is a family drama for the family.

Saw patiala house yesterday. It's definitely a bakwaas movie, but then again, I also think Dabbang was maha bakwaas as well, along with tees maar khan.
Patiala House (PH) is a very important film for AK. With the last two years being pretty bad for him, and audience faith at an all time low, AK desperately needed PH to lift his career. PH is like Akshay Kumar's Chak De India. Akshay is at that stage of his career where SRK was before the release of CDI. And I am happy to say, Patiala Houe redeems AK's reputation to a large extent.
While PH is not a classic by any means, it is AK's best drama/emotional film in a long time. In terms of story, PH is just another underdog/repressed protagonist story, with some comic elements thrown in between. But it is AK's performance, which lifts the film to a completely different level, and makes it a worthy attempt. AK is the heart and soul of the film, and he gives a memorable performance.
The film starts with Rishi's background story, and establishes his character. This is very important as it makes the central father-son conflict very beleivable. A father, who has not been able to forget and forgive, and a son, who cannot disobey his father out of love and respect. It is very identifiable, many of us have done that in our life. Although Rishi is the one who's wrong, you do not hate him for ruining 17 years of AK's life by not allowing him to play, instead you empathize with AK and respect his decision of understanding his father. Things change when Anushka enters the frame. She shows AK the flip side of his decision – the successive sacrifices his cousins have done after he set an example. The cousins hate AK, and he knows that, but without Anushka's love, he does not have the strength to revolt against Rishi. Anushka instills in him a sense of pride, self-respect, and inspires him to follow his dreams, so that at least his cousins can then follow their dreams. This has also been treated in the film sensitively and believably. Although you forget individuals amongst AK's cousins, they do strike a chord with their performances. Ultimately, when everyone supports AK, and then Dimple (AK's mother) also goes against Rishi, Rishi realizes he's stuck in the bygone era. The climax brings tears in your eyes.
The film succeeds in connecting with your heart, and that's because you can identify with AK's predicament. Anushka's character brings energy into the proceedings, and she performs well. She tends to go overboard in 1-2 scenes, but overall compliments AK well. Rishi & Dimple also perform well, and you feel pity for both of them. SEL's music is a big asset and does wonders for the movie. The background score heightens the impact of the scenes considerably. Songs are also woven well and do not hinder the flow.
Emotion is the core element of the film, and Nikhil succeeds there. His story/screenplay lacks finesse, but the emotional quotient of the film and the understated tone for most parts makes up for it. Another feather in his cap is that the film is beleivable in most parts. Of course there are some cinematic liberties, but they don't spoil the central story. The entire part of hiding AK's cricket matches from Rishi is unbelievable, but it makes you laugh. Kudos should also be given to the fact that AK's bowling action and the cricketing scenes look extremely real and thrilling. The real cricketers only add to the authenticity of the entire thing.
Overall, PH is AK's baby all the way. AK laughs, cries, stares, smiles, blushes, bowls, revolts, sacrifices. The important thing is that whatever he does, he does it with a subtlety and realism that is a first for him. Pargat Singh Kahlon touches your heart, moves you to tears, makes you laugh, and stays with you after the show has ended. AK completely immerses himself into the character which in turn immerses the audience into Pargat. PH is definitely a sort of milestone in AK's career and it should succeed at the BO because it deserves to.
