Why did you choose the number seven for your film Saat Khoon Maaf?
There are seven seas, seven sins, seven surs etc. And the name of the short story on which the film is based is Ruskin Bond's 'Suzanna's Seven Husbands'. So the number's right ' nine would be too much and six would be too less.

So what was so intriguing about the story that you decide to make a film on it?

The story of a women getting away with killing her seven husbands '. and the writer justifying her killings.
How faithful have you been to the original short story?
The film is a little different; actually we are coming out with a book which has the original short story, the novella (which Ruskin Bond expanded on Vishal's request) and the film screenplay, so the reader can know the journey.

Was it necessary for Suzanna to kill all her husbands ' couldn't she have just divorced them?

Suzanna is also called Sahib in the film and there is a wonderful anecdote in the film which says: Jab Sahib bachpan mein school jaya karti thi, school jaane ke do raaste the. Raaste pe ek pagal kutta unhe darane laga. Woh chahti to raasta badal sakti thi, par unhone bade Sahib ki choti banduk apne baste mein chupayee aur usko goli maar di 'Sahib raasta nahi badalti. Suzanna's character is very interesting but lonely in love, woh saari zindagi sacche pyaar mein khanabadosh reh gayee.

What makes you repeat Priyanka the second time around after Kaminey?
She is the finest actress among her contemporaries. She is very intelligent, very hard working; and also we have a rapport, which I have not been able to make with any other actress. At times, there was no need for me to even say anything to her, she would act exactly the way I had imagined.

How did you choose the seven husbands for Priyanka?
The film is about Priyanka's life. When we first meet her she is 22 and we show her life till she is around 60. We have shown her getting into a marriage within two years of her previous marriage and sometimes after eight years.
The pressure to cast a star is always there, I'm very thankful to all the actors who come into my film, especially John and Neil. They are big stars and they actually came forward and said that they want to be a part of the film; and didn't mind a small part in it.

Did Priyanka suggest names for her seven husbands?
Nahin, itni liberty nahin thi usse'

How involved was Ruskin Bond with the film story?
Suzanna's Seven Husbands was around four pages but 400 pages were hidden in that ' that is the magic of Ruskin Saab. I knew Ruskin Saab from before as we worked together in The Blue Umbrella. I contacted Ruskin Saab and asked him if he would expand the story as it was beyond me to elaborate on those characters. During the shooting of Kaminey, I would get hand written chapters by him (he doesn't use a typewriter). I became a child again thinking that I'm the only reader in this large world for whom Ruskin Saab was writing. He came up with new ways of killing people; and by the end of the shooting, the novel was ready. From there, I worked with a friend of mine, Matthew Robbins, from Hollywood
What is the latest on your film with Shah Rukh Khan ' 2 States?
After Saat Khoon Maaf, I have to decide what I want to make. I'm considering 2 States and I'm also considering a novel by Ruskin Saab and a film based on Shakespeare.
Has the casting for your next, 2 States, progressed besides Shah Rukh Khan?
I'm so engrossed in Saat Khoon Maaf that I haven't been able to find time.
