hey all

I read an article a couple of months ago on a website wherein, the interests of youngsters were discussed, and in particular, TV serials were targeted for showing the gen X as dimwitted people who have nothing to do apart from wear multicoloured outfits and romance in different backdrops...now i, being a part of today's generation know that that is not the truth..we have many more things going on in our lives like college/uni, careers, financial issues, relationship troubles (with family), friends etc...but still...movies targeted at youngsters are always suave rom-coms or romantic fluffy stuff...Very few movies like RDB, 3 idiots etc focus on the other aspects of a youngster's life...As adolecents and teenagers with raging hormones...of course we all love ourselves some guilty-fluffy pleasure, but is romance all that attracts us in a movie?

Dunt get me wrong now, nothing wrong with rom coms....but dont u think we as an audience tend to be a lot more biased towards them? Say we have a mediocre rom com and a mediocre thriller/drama or any other genre, i bet most of us would go for the rom com...even on IF...everytime there is new rom com/love story coming up...every alternate post is about the movie, its actors, their pairing, their chemistry etc etc...but say there is a movie like johnny gaddar or A wednesday or Once Upon a time in Mumbai, we dont seem to have pages and pages of discussion (or sometimes even frenzy fights) on the points and issues of that particular movie...Im not blaming anyone...just pondering over a point that at the end of the day, is romance all we want to watch in a movie...? a couple of drool worthy stars, some romantic scenes, nice music...bas...paisa vasool?

PS: Healthy discussion is encouraged and you are most welcome to disagree with anyones point of view, as long as there is proper justification.

I think u just answered your query with this line "...we have many more things going on in our lives like college/uni, careers, financial issues, relationship troubles (with family), friends etc...but still...movies targeted at youngsters are always suave rom-coms or romantic fluffy stuff..." < as a welcome change from all the problmes, you happen to unwind by embracing rom-coms, i know, at least, I do. 😆

lol...agreed that fluff is a way of escapism ....but that can be from many other genres aswell....we can unwind with a comedy, an action thriller (Dhoom 2) etc..but i dunt get the perception in movies and tv shows, that our lives are centrally focused on romance, and we actually fuel such movies by embracing that perception.....

for one, we've not had any great comedies recently & action thrillers tend to include violence. who wants violence after all that we go through in a week's time? 😛

Well if romance was the only interest then movies like inception, harry potter, batman would not be successful.
same goes for bollywood. Dabangg, 3 idiots and Paa are not romantic flicks.

well, i love rom-coms, they make ur heart light and u enjoy it

i think with time there are loads of variety in the films, films are made on social issues, women centric films(less but still)

are we interested in only romantic movies? No from me

people are interested in entertainment, when it comes to movies, so then be it romance, preachy, action or thriller... it would work...!
why pick on romance movies only...? the latest blockbusters include 3 idiots, dabaang, rajneeti... none of which were romance movies... except ajab prem ki ghazab kahani... comedies work too, like many of akshay's movies... so depends... and most people look for escapism... not that i can blame them... i am the same...! 😳

At some point people do get tired of romantic movies. Especially when in bollywood there is one story, boy meets girl falls in love etc. I want to see more movies like Lagaan, RDB, A wednesday, Chak De, Dabangg, MNIK where it shows more than to the world than Romance. There is so much happening around the world, i want director to go out larger than they can dream. Like aamir said we must imagine first than to execute. I think 3I was okay movie, nothing so great about it than the script.

With the uni-dimensional minsetted audience that we have, it is best to keep them busy with a guy and gal running in a mustard field. Our audience is like that raging bull, who when sees a red flag just keeps running in that direction without realizing where he/she is going. There is no grey character in our audience's mind, they still see the world in a black and white way. Either the world is bad bad bad, ugly, ugly, scary, or its filled with butterfiles, mustard fields, peaches. There is no middle way for audience. If someone tries to make idealistic movies then they get soo cliched in showing the idealism that it loses track to reality. That is why I liked Aitraaz, it beautifully showed that its not always a man who is wrong.. a woman can be monsterous too, a woman can attempt to rape a man too, a woman can be manipulative too, its not always the man's fault.. It was good at ripping apart the stereotype where woman are always showcased as a victim in our society... Woman can be equally manipulative.. but still this is a scary thought to people.. But, I honestly don't think our audience is ready to face facts and come out of dreamworld... So they should forever stick to same ole crap.

^Hey there, you seem to be mighty pissed. Chill 😃 Most of us said we enjoyed rom-coms as a break from what life throws at us, that certainly doesn't mean we didn't like recent blockbusters like 3Idiots, Dabangg, Peepli Live & since you mentioned, Aitraaz( I think there r many takers for that one, too) and it most certainly doesnt mean we are ALL uni-dimensional 😆 Not only us, cuz we hardly constitute 1% of the actual junta that goes to watch movies, but the real audience out there cant be blamed either. I think OUTIM was quite a hit & so was Rajneeti. Completely diff. genres. And then if you take into consideration IHLS, which actually was a rom-com, I think less than 10% of us liked it and it fared worse compared to movies with different genres that came out at the same time. You just can't paint everyone as uni-dimensional for liking a particular genre completely knowing that they are equally open to the other's too. Last I remember, you were one of the very few on here who really enjoyed IHLS :)
