Sigh. All this for a movie. WTF is wrong with these people? You know what's worse? Fox is involved. If this news spreads to West...so shameful for India.

They should release MNIK on Pay Per View..on TVs. This way families will all watch safely at home. And movie can still make money.

Sena threat looms large, SRK film's booking closed

Amrita Panja / CNN-IBN

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Mumbai Police have assured security to those cinema theaters which will be screening Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name Is Khan in Mumbai.

But many cinema halls did not open their counters for advance bookings for the film following threats by the Shiv Sena to disrupt the film's screening.

Shiv Sainiks had attacked cinema theaters where My Name Is Khan is led to be screened in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Now almost all cinema theaters in the city have refused to take any advance bookings for My Name is Khan which will be released on Friday.

"Can they ensure that there is no disruption? Can they ensure that my property and public will be safe?" asked G7 Multiplex owner Manoj Desai.

But Mumbai Police maintained that advance bookings were open at theaters and even exhibitors denied that advance bookings were closed.

Tickets for My Name is Khan were not available in many theaters of Mumbai Andheri. More surprisingly at a prime junction in suburban Mumbai it were not the Shiv Sainiks but the police themselves pulling down posters of the film.

While it is still unclear if the Shah Rukh-Kajol starrer will release in Mumbai on February 12, Mumbaikars are hoping for a solution to the face-off soon.

But far from the battleground the film's stars were in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday for the film's premiere where Shah Rukh voiced his concern once again.

"I live in hope that everything becomes fine though I am a little sad. I just want people to realise that whatever is happening it will affect all of us in Mumbai. Everyone in Mumbai will be sad," said Shah Rukh Khan.

'Why only SRK, why not Bachchan?'
Mumbai: The Shiv Sena worker on the street is unhappy. While following orders and protesting against film star Shah Rukh Khan for his alleged sympathy for Pakistani cricketers, he wonders why his party bosses are ignoring the doings of another star, Amitabh Bachchan. He wants a ban on Bachchan's films, too.

On Tuesday, Bachchan took part in a poetry-reading session with Pakistani actor Zia Mohyeddin at an event organised in Bandra to foster friendship with Pakistan. Bachchan read poems of his father, the late Harivansh Rai Bachchan, while Mohyeddin read shairi by the late Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

"Why should Amitabh be spared?" said Shashikant Kadam, a Sena worker. "If Saheb [Bal Thackeray] orders us, we will protest against him, too."

Rajan Kandekar, another loyalist, said, "Anyone who suggests that we should have good relations with Pakistan must be punished, no matter who he is. Bachchan should not be spared."

Yogesh Mayekar said Bachchan's films should also be boycotted. "I know Saheb has good relations with him. But when it comes to policy he should rise above friendship. Sachin Tendulkar and Mukesh Ambani are also his good friends. Still, he targeted them for their remarks on Mumbai. I hope he orders us to protest against Bachchan, too."

Blogging about the event, Bachchan wrote: "The evening was most satisfying. I loved the ambience. That informal sit around, much like the days when my father used to recite. People just gathered around, sat on the floor, palti maar ke, and the evening went on for hours and no one knew how time passed."

Asked if the Sena would call for a boycott of Bachchan, spokesperson Sanjay Raut said, "I will seek information about the event and [we will] look into it."

That Bachchan shares an excellent rapport with Bal Thackeray and Uddhav is no secret. On several occasions he has said that Thackeray is a father figure for him and Uddhav is like his brother. In turn, Thackeray has always stood by the actor, whether it was during the release of Sarkar, a controversial film starring the actor, or when nephew Raj accused Bachchan of betraying Maharashtra.

Keep first three rows vacant in cinemas
Mumbai: The police have requested cinema owners to keep the first three rows vacant and deploy at least two of their security guards near the screen.

"This will prevent incidents like ripping off screens with blades," Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (law & order), said. Theatre owners have been told to install night vision cameras because it would help the police identify troublemakers, he said.

Commissioner D Sivanandhan has sent a message to all police stations that constables should frisk every person entering the hall and check their bags. It is not mandatory for people to show their identity cards.

Single-screen cinemas will be manned by a sub-inspector, along with a constable, two women constables and five policemen in plain clothes. Also, SRPF personnel and Home Guards will be present at cinemas where the movie will release on Friday.

24-hour govt security at Thackerays' Matoshree
Mumbai: An entire contingent of Mumbai Police, equivalent to the whole strength of a police station, guards the Thackerays round-the-clock at their Matoshree bungalow in Kala Nagar, Bandra (East).

At least 246 policemen guard the entire Thackeray family at any given day. Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray might have said that he surrender the security provided to him, it would make little difference because the police would still guard the entire family.

The number of policemen deployed throughout the day to protect the Thackerays include a senior inspector, three inspectors, 21 sub-inspectors, 179 constables, four escort vehicles, one senior officer and 22 jawans of the State Reserve Police Force, and policemen in plain-clothes.

"The number of policemen deployed is more than the entire staff of majority of police stations in Mumbai," an officer said. All the policemen deployed are armed with AK47s and SLRs, he said.

'Why isn't Shah Rukh Khan here to help us?'
Mumbai: Not willing to risk further damage, Manoj Desai, executive director of Maratha Mandir, has said that he would not be screening the movie. "Irrespective of how the situation pans out over the next two days, I will not be screening My Name Is Khan at my two theatres — Maratha Mandir and Gaiety," said Desai.

"On Tuesday, Sena protestors tore the screen at Maratha Mandir, the damage costing Rs 82,500, even though I hadn't put up any posters related to the film nor did I open the advance booking. So why was my theatre targeted?" He also asked the commitment of the filmmakers. "It's sad that while the team of MNIK is attending a lavish premiere in Abu Dhabi, theatre owners in Mumbai are facing the party's ire," he said.

"Shouldn't Shah Rukh Khan have been in Mumbai in this time of crisis? I'd rather show the Hindi dubbed version of the Hollywood film, The Wolfman, than screen MNIK."

Meanwhile, Khan, at a pre-release press conference at Abu Dhabi, said that he hoped "better sense prevails in Mumbai. We have worked really hard on the movie and we just want people to watch the movie".

Mumbai multiplexes restart advance booking of My Name Is Khan
Mumbai: Multiplexes today reopened advance booking for Shah Rukh Khan's new film My Name Is Khan, a day after suspending it, following Maharashtra Government's assurance to provide adequate security to cinema theatres here.

"Advance booking of 'My Name..' has started again after police intervened in the matter and ensured tight security to all theatres," Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe told reporters here.

Despite the government assurance of providing security to cinema halls screening the movie which releases on February 12,(2010), some multiplexes had closed advance bookings yesterday, fearing violent protest from Shiv Sena.

"As per law, compensation for damaging the properties (of theatres) would be sought from Sena, if required," Bagwe said.

Police have arrested over 1,200 Shiv Sainiks, some of them office-bearers, since yesterday after they stepped up protest against the film over the actor's 'Pakistan -players-for IPL-3' remarks last month.
