POLITICAL POSTURING
Victims Like Us
Biswadeep Ghosh, 5 February 2010, 12:00am ISTText Size:|Topics:Mumbai

Something is wrong. Something is seriously wrong. The Shiv Sena has taken an unhealthy and parochial stand once more, demanding an apology from Shah Rukh Khan over his statement supporting the inclusion of Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League. The victim is My Name Is Khan, whose release will face stiff resistance in Mumbai. Why, one may ask. Well, there is no answer, accustomed as we all are to the Sena's gimmicky and partisan political posturing so often. Such is the nature of the party's politics that it needs an enemy - as often as possible - to make itself heard. Minus a concrete agenda the moment the party is stripped off its communal paraphernalia, the Sena needs excuses to let the world know what being a 'party with a difference' is all about. They preach the ideology of fear without which they would not exist.

Having said that, it seems really bizarre when a work of art - in this case, a movie - gets into trouble because of the party's absurdly destructive attitude. The film, after all, is a project in which film-maker Karan Johar has tried to take a creative step forward. And, Johar does not own an IPL team. More importantly, SRK, as the owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, has every right to voice his freedom of expression. If Pakistani players are talented, and the world knows they are, why should anybody target him and his movie if he supports their inclusion in the IPL? Absurdity has no explanation. But, it is infinitely better as and when anything that is meaningless makes us laugh. The problem begins when a section of the society takes a random stance to generate an attention-seeking uproar. Such an approach is absurd too, but the consequence can be saddening. For, here we are, inhabiting a 21st century India which is growing up rapidly, and whose thinking seems to have changed as well. A lot of what we experience seems fine until the unleashing of a primitive thought process hurts us. The idea behind such terrible actions is to create trouble and display political clout. But, God knows we don't need them. Just ask SRK, or other victims like him.

and i was just watching news, all the political parties are against shivsena. I think finally people are taking stand.

Glad to see Salman speaking up! Aamir instantly supported Srk.. All the political parties... Congress, BJP.. and everyone is showing full support to Srk.. its a no brainer... man! Some of the people in SS have gone senile.. and are saying the most absurd things about everyone.. they even said that Rahul gandhi has lost his mind because he has gotten old and still hasnt married.. how lame is that? Everyone is asking for uninterrupted release of MNIK on Feb 12th.. and looking at things right now I am pretty sure its gonna happen.. and hopefully that with shut SS up..

Knew Salman would have reacted --- If there's anyone who has b***s in the industry - It's Salman...He never takes c**p from anyone....

Ok the 3 Khans have spoken out ---- Something tells me some other people will follow the trend...🥱 Who?

I always knew Salman would support ,so it's not a surprise to me.
He is not the kind to mix personal and professional differences.Salman's a frank guy and he will take a stand when it comes to the Industry.
Bollywood is a very ungrateful place.Salman is supporting this but there have been times when BJP was taking out protests against Salman and not a single person from the Industry stood by Sal.

Hey maybe the three Khans can get together and start a movement. 😆 I am quite surprised for Salman being one of the very few to talk about it so openly to the media. I guess I should give credit where it's due. It's nice of Salman to do this. He's better than Saif, Hrithik Roshan, VO etc who party at SRK's house/are friends with him etc but can't utter a single word at this time.

Oh cmon, let the man defend himself. It will only bring in India one step closer to progress. Why doesn't any other ordinary man speak up? Well it's simple: it's because not every other man has access to the media and not every other man is as powerful as the SRK. If this was an ordinary man on the street, so far the Shiv Sena goons would have killed off him and his family to silence them, but since it's SRK, a well known figure, he has benefits over others which he could utilize.

At the end, it'd be SRK's choice to take an action, but his fans should not get defensive because nobody will blame him for the route he picks. He's a grown man, and knows how much wings to spread.

Oh I'm not defending him at all. For me, whichever way he goes, I can understand. I'll be more happy if he doesn't back down. All I'm saying is, he'll entail losses in some form in either of his decisions.

A friend isn't someone who benefits from you when everything is alright and the next day when y're in trouble - you don't hear anything from them...To many levels Salman is STILL SRK's friend because when Salman disagrees with SRK he tells him face to face and he backs him when SRK is right - that's what I call a TRUE FRIEND not like some fake sycophant people who just show up to have their names in glam magazines or praise you when everyone says you're the "king" or "badsha"!!!!!
When SRK was struggling to be a BW actor - Salman helped him a lot - so Salman will never do bad things against him or wish him bad! Even if they don't talk - there's mutual respect -- a friend is someone who tells you what he really thinks about you ---- not full time annoying praisers...
I like Salman for acknowledging when he's right or wrong and say things to people face to face - He's right - If SS has a pb with SRK's statement - Debate with HIM about it - no need to threaten the security of his family or to ruin his business --- it's called TERROR - there's no excuse for it and yes people who died on the 26/11 are six feet under because of people who use TERROR as a method of expression!!!
So to many levels SS = TERRORISTS who killed those innocents!!!
I have a pb with coward people - only coward people threaten and use TERROR to get what they want!
