Mumbai:
As the Shiv Sena continues its attacks on Shah Rukh Khan, the Hindi film industry, which prides itself on being a "fraternity", has largely shied away from publicly standing up for him — supportive tweets from some stars notwithstanding.
The Indian Express put two questions to a host of Bollywood personalities: 'What do you make of the Sena vs SRK controversy?', and 'Why is nobody speaking for SRK?'
A few got back, some promised to but didn't, the rest remained incommunicado.
The person who came out loudest and clearest in support of Shah Rukh was Salman Khan, a man who has recently had very public differenceswith SRK.
Said Salman, "I think what Shah Rukh said was that the Pakistani players should have been included in the IPL. If I'm not mistaken even our Home Minister P Chidambaram said the same thing. Sports and politics are two different things. In cricket, the only thing you hit is a ball. A sporting field is all about sportsmanship, sports is such a wonderful leveler that both winners and losers shake hands in the beginning as well as at the end of the match."
Asked why he was backing his "friend-turned-foe", Salman said, "That's because Shah Rukh hasn't said anything wrong. What should he apologize for? My Name Is Khan should be released for sure. It has to. As an industry we pay huge entertainment tax to the government and we entertain the people also. We don't think like politicians. I anyway don't understand this whole thing of taking a morcha and going to somebody's house."
(The Shiv Sena has been vandalising posters and hoardings of MNIK, warning theatre-owners not to screen the film, and tried to go to SRK's home with a symbolic 'ticket to Pakistan' for him.)
SRK, Salman said, needs the support of his fans.
"Where are Shah Rukh's fans? They should stand up and come out in hoards to show their support for their hero. And why take out your anger on a film? It's not just Shah Rukh's film. It's the producer's film, the distributor's film, the other actors, what wrong have they done? And any which way, at the end of the day, a film belongs to the people who see it, who wait for it so in a way you are depriving them of what they enjoy. If you have a problem with SRK, talk it with him. Don't take it out on the film."
Shah Rukh also got support from Riteish Deshmukh. "Any issue can be sorted out with logical debate and discussion," Riteish said. "Statements made by people should be read in their right context. I don't support holding a film at ransom to sort out an issue. We are all one and we stand united with Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar."
Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee said, "There was one statement made to express an opinion. And there was an expression of opinion against it. I consider both as completely valid since our society allows us the right to express ourselves and stand by it. However, for me the issue is whether illegal means can be resorted to while expressing our opinions and sentiments in public. I, as a normal citizen, would like the lawmakers and the lawkeepers of the country to guide us on this. If it is, then we, as citizens, will bear the consequences."
Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Sushmita Sen, Yash Chopra and Preity Zinta, who has an IPL team of her own, did not respond to calls and text messages.
Some B-town heavyweights responded, and cited reasons for why they could not reply.
Akshay Kumar said he was in Germany. Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali got back with "In shooting. Will call back." Hrithik Roshan promptly replied with, "Can you wait till the evening?", and did not get back. Two SMSes to him from The Indian Express went unanswered.
Saif Ali Khan was unavailable. As was girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, who incidentally, is paired opposite SRK in his next home production, Ra.1.
Priyanka Chopra, who is shooting in New York, didn't respond either. But she tweeted, "Good morning everyone.. being away from home feels strange at times like this..with the team of MNIK all the way..SRK, Karan Kajol..I support!"
Deepika Padukone tweeted, "Am with u Karan and SRK and the MNIK team...more power to u!!"
Farhan Akhtar has been on Twitter too. Some of his tweets: "Nothing and nobody has the right to disrupt the release of MNIK. With Karan, Srk all the way. There is no need for anyone to be afraid in face of this sort of hooliganism! There are laws and we have faith in them protecting us. the best way that you can show support for MNIK and cock a snoot at the madness is go watch it fearlessly."
Arjun Rampal told SRK on Twitter, "Didn't expect anything less from you, proud of you and your stand. We are all with you and will not let this pass lying down."
Abhishek Bachchan wasn't so direct, but maybe SRK can read the fine print in his tweet: "Do not change who you are for anyone. If God, in all his wisdom, made you the way you are, he did it for a reason."
