I just watched Paa a day ago and while I agree that Vidya was great I just felt she wasn't great all throughout. I loved her in the scene where she shouts at her mother while sitting under the tree. But then in her final breakdown scene with Abhishek I felt she wasn't that good - not convincing enough. I think her interaction with Auro was the highlight of the film. She pulled off the humourous and serious dramatic parts with equal ease. Still I felt she wasn't consistent throughout.

In terms of Box Office this is ofcourse Katrina's year. She has had two major successes and New York was solely marketed on her name. She was the big star in the film even if her role was shorter.

But in terms of actual performances I prefer PC in Kaminey, Koko in LBC, and Mahie Gill in Dev D. I felt they had the most shades and complexity to show in their roles. PC in Kaminey had to pull off an accent (which she did really well). The character itself is extremely complex - equal parts femme fatale, and naive lover. She isn't just a straightforward loudmouth. In WYR I think the writing was the short-fall. Still she rose above it and made actual characters with a lot of the caricatures she was handed. I liked her better in Kaminey. Again with Koko in LBC - it isn't a very dramatic role, but its a very nuanced and complex performance. Sona is manipulative herself but still gets taken for a ride. It is also the entire graph that her character goes through that was interesting for me.

Then finally Mahie in Dev D was a firecracker. I haven't watched Dev D in months and I saw Paa a few days ago and I can say honestly I remember a lot more of Mahie as Paro than of Vidya in Paa.

As an aside Rajeev Masand's choice this year for top three actresses includes PC for Kaminey, Koko for LBC and Vidya for Paa. Raja Sen a critic who is pretty harsh on most films and performances, picked PC as his top choice for Kaminey, Mahie Gill second for Dev D and Kareena 3rd for 3 Idiots.

I could call Pri's character a naive lover in Kaminey.. but I didn't see her character going the Femme fatale road.. I mean Sweety was an ordinary looking chick.. whose charm wasn't I would say alluring enough.. that she wanted to trap a prince or something.. but her character was driven by the want to escape the wrath of her brother.. and she was just desperately looking for any guy.. as long as that person wasn't the one who was selected by her brother. That is why she chose to get hitched with a no-body.. like Guddu.. Although.. yes they had a background story.. and the "loved" each.. other! But there wasn't anything like a seductress or anything femme fatalish in her character! I personally found her character to the ordinary.. chick running away from her family to marry.. an average joe kinda character.. I mean we have seen so many of those in the movies.. And then the story continued with the cliched lines of how the guy tries to win over her family.. and get her back and stuf.. although the circumstances around the family were different.. Overall.. it was just another chick running away from her family to be with her lover.. and she was a dominating girl.. nothing much..

Whos year was 2009?

Hmmmm, i would have said Kareena, BUT for Me Kareena has ALWAYS been a gr8 actress! For just one example, Jab We Met! She Aced IT!

But as for 2009, it was KATRINA who rele did her BEST in Newyork! She proved that IF she gets the right script and the right director, then EVEN she has the capacity to ACT!!!

In Actors, well I havnt seen 3 iditots as yet, BUT it had been setting huge records and has been declared HISTORIC! So i guess it was Aamir's years officially!

But as for me! ITS OUT ANS OUT JOHN's YEAR! Even HE proved that hes one GR8888 actor!!!!! Hats off to all the detention scenes he did in Newyork!!! Amazing work!!!!!!!!!!! 👍🏼 👏

I disagree quite a bit there. I think the relationship between Guddu and Sweety was pretty well established in the Mumbai, Chennai scene. That is what I meant by the femme fatale, seductress side. She seduces him in that scene. And then again in the scene where she manipulates him into marrying her. Then when she talks about why she lied to him you get their love for each other. She could have gone for any guy - why the stammerer who didn't open up to her initially. She seeks him out, brings him out of his shell - I see genuine feelings there and not just a need to get away from the family. So no I don't think there is anything average-joeish about Sweety. Yes Guddu was her escape from her family - but it could have been any other dude at college. And the fact that all of that happenes is such little screen time is interesting. And cliched storyline of winning over the family? This isn't exactly DDLJ. 😆 He bribes the goon brother with 10 crores of cocaine, he stands up to the brother in the whole Mumbai-Bombay thing. I wouldn't really call that "winning over". In fact Kaminey takes a lot of regular cliches and twists them on their head according to me.

^^ Well I relate femme fatale to a glamorous seductress.. who traps someone in her web of lies .. or for her motives.. something like Kareena's character in Fida! I mean conving your bf for a makeout time.. or forcing him to marry you is not a femme fatale.. its an every day girl.. lol! LOl.. if you equate some changes as in change Amrish puri's character into Amol Gupte.. Shahid and Srk are quite similar to begin with.. lol.. and instead of Srk sweet talking ompuri in the end to get kajol.. you bring Guddu.. trying to blackmail and trade.. illegal stuff with Sweety's family.. and you include.. a story like Deewar.. with two brothers.. Guddu and Charlie.. and throw in some other random characters.. like in cartoons.. like Family guy.. who have nothing to do with the script.. You get Dhan te nan... KAMINEY!!!! LMAFO...

i love Dhan te Nan!! Shahid rocked. As far actresses i don't go for Priyanka at all in Kaaminey. Kareena in Kurban was alright, she didn't had a strong role. Haven't watch DBH, so can't comment on Rani.

And that is why I said it twists cliches. Yes the violence in the film is "cartoony" which is a major part of caper/pulp films. And pulp films themselves are sort of films-within-films genre homages. They are based on the idea of taking old movie cliches and twisting them - which explains the bichde bhai angle - though their reunion is very different and so is the nature of their relationship with each other.

Also I don't think femme-fatale has anything to do with glamourous appearance - nor does it necessarily have negative/villainous connotations. To me its more about guile and manipulation. Which can come from an everyday girl too - as they do from Sweety.

I never really got the whole SRK-Shahid being similar thing. But even going along with that for a second, there is nothing similar between Raj-DDLJ to Shahid's Guddu in Kaminey.

😆 Don't you think you simplified it a bit too much? 😆
However, I completely agree with teh femme fatale description. Sweety is definitely not a femme fatale character, though she is head strong and dominant, knows what she wants and goes after it.
Both Kareena and Priyanka performed equally well in their respective smaller roles, i.e. in 3 Idiots and Kaminey. 3 Idiots though is by far the biggest hit (not only of this year but of all times).
In actors, it's definitely between Amit ji for Paa and Aamir for 3 Idiots.
p.s. Excellent posts, btw. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
