I feel its a tricky situation..firstly Chetan shouldn't hv signed that contract before demanding the script from the makers..why did he approve to Vidhu Vinod chopra in that contract that his name can appear in the rolling credits of the film..that is in the end and now crying foul after signing this contract ??..Any writer should first demand the whole script before signing any such major contract..so now even if he is right he doesn't hv any proof because he himself signed that contract..

secondly I don't know whether Chetan would hv been so vocal about his dissatisfaction if 3 Idiots was a flop ??..just because its a blockbuster and collected some 175crores in BO whereas he got just 10lakhs as per contract he might b cursing his own destiny for signing such an immatured contract..he might b shouting that he doesn't need money but only credit, but I m sure he is no saint either..in case of hello film when makers were giving him over the top credit for the script he was busy hiding his face sinse hello was a flop and now he is so hungry for credit..strange na...

Yes I agree Aamir,Vidhu and Hirani r also wrong in giving him less credit espcially Vidhu's behaviour in front of press was unacceptable but Chetan making such a huge hungama after the movie is a super hit is making me doubt on his intentions as well..

In short either parties r trying to take credit for the film's success whether its Vidhu or Chetan just because its human nature to get associated or to get credit for any successful venture😃..
Vidhu made a clever contract with Chetan to make the later look like an idiot and unfortunately Chetan fell for it and signed the contract thus putting the axe on his own feet😆..now even if he shouts for credit in the beginning of the film,Vidhu always hv the advantage of that contract which Chetan himself signed..

The contract.

I am confused! CB initially blogged that he hadn't read the script...yet in this article he says he liked the script!
http://www.bollywood.com/i-liked-final-script-three-idiots-chetan-bhagat

I just read his recent blog....seems like he also wants credit for STORY...it's not just where the credit is.

I don't know enough to take sides...so I will watch this one unfold :-)

CB is surely a double faced guy..he clearly said in the interview that he liked the script and now he is openly claiming they din't show him the script or the film😕😆..
first I thought mayb he was not given the script and still he went ahead with the contract like a foolish😆..but now after reading the interview I m sure he is making the audience idiots just for getting the credit😆
The main thing is whether he read the script or not..he signed the contract without any pressure..so now he has no right to cry foul😊

Ah Jyoti...I agree with you. The contract is a very clever one indeed. It says that the credit will appear in the rolling credits but never says WHERE in the rolling credits! Or CB didn't think rolling credits means at the end.

Bluemoon mentioned Slumdog Millionaire somewhere...where was Vikas Swarup credited in the movie credits? As far as I know Simon Beaufoy was the writer of the film as there were a lot of differences between the book and the movie. Anyone has a DVD who can check? But the SM makers treated Swarup with respect...he was invited to all the award shows and stuff.

Vikas Swaroop was credited in the beginning of the film with a 'Based on Vikas Swaroop's Novel' credit...and Simon Beaufoy even thanked Vikas in his Oscar acceptance speech for giving the original story idea!

Well I think even if the credit was meant to be in the end....it should have been the first thing after the movie ends. Forget legal matters for a second....even if there were changes in the story and the script etc...they have to credit the source of the story somewhere prominent. I read in some post that he was credited after the still photographer or something like that. I haven't seen the movie or read the book 😆 so my opinion is based on what I think it should be. I think if your movie is based/inspired/adapted etc and is not original (5% or 70%) the writer of the book DESERVES prominent credit. If it is in the end it has to be the first thing in my opinion.
I don't get how 'Inspired by Chetan Bhagat's FPS' could have hurt VVC and his Team!!! 😕 They might have changed the story completely, but the core of the film was taken by the book! Its a fact! And a more respectful credit roll wouldn't have hurt anyone!
The logic is simple. The3I team wanted to pass it off as completely their work. Heck, they even tried convincing CB of not including FPS at all. Such shame.

Rolling credits could mean anything. Maybe CB thought his name would come first and in large font as soon as the movie ends. WHICH is what they shouldve done. They gave CB a measly treatment by doing what they did.

Hmm...so now this Read-The-Script-Or-Not question comes in the way...because if he had read the script, then there'd be no question of suddenly waking upto how similar or different the film is from the book, after its release...come to think of it, the statement Aamir makes in the video...that CB insisted that the script is very different from the book...don't see how he can be so certain if he has no idea what the script is like in the first place...
At the end of the day, however, whether CB's doing a publicity plea or not, or had read the script or not, I still think the writer of the book that serves as the basic premise of a movie should get at least a Thank You at the end of the movie...either just before the rolling credits, or at their head...I haven't read the book either, and this is just my opinion in general...
As far as this particular mess is concerned, I suppose it's best if I take the road LifeOLicious is taking, and sit this one out...😊

The latest on Star News is that Vidhu Vinod Chopra has issued an apology to the media for his outburst yesterday and has also said that he never wants to meet Chetan Bhagat again! (I am sure, neither does Chetan have any wish to meet VVC 😆)

And here it is...

Vidhu Vinod Chopra apologises to media

Noida: Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra Saturday apologised to the media for asking a reporter to shut up when he was asked him if his film "3 Idiots" was lifted from Chetan Bhagat's book "Five Point Someone".

"I really think I'm silly (but) I was provoked (to react that way). But I shouldn't have done this. I saw myself on TV (later) and saw how I was shouting 'shut up! shut up!' like an animal. I told myself - 'what nonsensical behaviour'," Chopra told reporters here.

The producer lost his cool when he was asked whether 70 percent of the film, which has grossed over Rs.100 crore in the first four days, was taken from the book -- as claimed by Bhagat. Chopra got angry and demanded to know if the journalist had seen the movie and read the book.

The scribe said he had seen "3 Idiots" but had not read "Five Point Someone". This further angered Chopra, who got up and started shouting: "Then you shut up. When you have not read the book, then how can you say that the movie is 70 percent of the book?"

Chopra's reaction evoked anger among the reporters with many demanding that the filmmaker apologise. But he didn't -- until Saturday.

Now Chopra says that he doesn't want to meet Bhagat "for the rest of my life because it's all being done with very bad intention".

He went on: "Do you know the man (Bhagat), apart from signing the contract, took his money. I (even) paid him (the) bonus before the movie (was) released. That man is not saying it now. Actually the bonus I was supposed to pay him after the film was released has been paid to him.

"He took the money and now the money is in the bank. Look how it was all manipulated. He started it all when I left Mumbai," said Chopra.

But Bhagat is adamant that he has not been given due credit for the storyline and that most of the sequences in the film have been lifted from his bestseller.
