I haven't seen the original - so can't say. These days in India are very extravagant affairs so I can also imagine fights over the venue, caterer, the random starlets they can get to make the wedding more "happening".

You should read the first post then. 😃 The actual question is a bit more specific.

No that isn't the case.

I haven't seen Bride Wars so I can't comment on how they would adapt it to India. Secondly, my question was about setting remakes abroad instead of in India - I don't even know where Bride Wars is supposed to be set, so I can't comment on it.

I would really appreciate if people read the actual post and commented to avoid unnecessary fan wars.

I personally don't think this movie should be remade....but that's cuz I happen to have liked the original movie....I for sure didn't think it was crappy at all....LOL....Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts gave brilliant performances and it was a very emotional and touching film IMO.

So I really don't want to see a KJo style OTT melodrama with 'aa aaa aaa' sad soundtrack playing in the bg to 'heighten' the emotional aspects....it's going to end up being a caricature....with maybe Kajol's and Kareena's performances being the only saving grace.

Hi Lili. Is that correct? Thanks for responding to my post in such a thoughtful way. I love these discussions as I learn as I read posts like yours. Your being French also helps me see the world through different eyes. It's nice to know that HIndi cinema is being appreciated by a world audience now. My sister in law is from Spain and loves Hindi movies too. So I get a sense of European perspective all the time. She watches Hindi movies with my brother.

I want to tell you that I love World Cinema and have seen many french movies too. I've seen Les Cauges au Folles actually before I saw the american version. They both are good. One because they also got an actor like Robin Williams to play the part briilliantly .I like Gerard Depardeux too very much. Amelie is also my all time favorite movies. I am a cinema buff and that's why you see me here. It's my chance to voice my opinion.

About Halloween. I recognize that is orignally European. The whole masquerade thing. I love it. And I am glad Europe has gone back to celebrating it.

I am ok with remakes as well. I am not soooo opposed to it as long as it comes with a level of creativity and the movie tells a story with charm and sense. You wont find that in a lot of HIndi remakes. That's why many are opposed to it. And I am as well. Maybe when we see more movies like Sarkar, the trend to dislike them will change.

Here is the crux of my issue:

About internalized racism and where we are going as a culture. I feel very strongly about that. Because every time I go back to my country to visit my family...people say India has changed. I am thrilled. But, I still see garbage everywhere and the infrastructure not improving. Children on the street and many other things. However, what is changed is this absorption of American values. I am scared of that because you have people wanting to by Valentines cards and wanting to go on dates. But, you still have people who have not had sex education. So what does that do to a society? I don't know will we manage it. Or people want to wear mini skirts like the girls they see on TV. But, hello I'm sorry men are so repressed and chauvinistic on the streets that you cannot really dress like that. Something bad might happen. that's the reality. The girls in the movies you see don't really dress like that in real life.

KJo's movies feed into this desire to move fast into luxury and an American lifestyle. I laugh when you talk about how confused you were with KKKG. His movie was an exact replication of what India wants to be. On one hand the movie was very indian about loving your parents and coming back together as a family. And on the other hand it was ridulously over the top with luxury and palaces.
Personally, I believe the movie would have been just as effective with a rich family from India and no helicopter. It would of lend itself to more authenticity and charm. I definitely would of like the movie more.

It's not that I want India to be poor and am not aware of the Globalization of the whole entire world. That's great and we all need to take good things from other countries. Like the whole masquerade thing is so nice. But, what are we taking and not taking. Or at the same time are we saying that there is something that we can offer the world. When we take our cinema to the world, can we showcase the real India.

Like it's nice that the world over people have been taking the tradition of Yoga and now it's popular everywhere. We do have something to offer, but is it come from the Westerners who say look you are good, your tan skin is beautiful, look at your architecture- how fascinating. It is taking the West to tell us we are interesting. I wish it would come more inherently from ourselves. That we would feel proud of showcasing it.

By the way. Step mom is a crap movie and your right .... a crappy Hollywood movie has little to offer. Especially when it's made in another part of the world. That too when Indians still have not lived a life of the step family model. How many indians have experienced this lifestyle. Not many. Again KJO is appealing to what he knows. The Hindi Film Fraternity. I think KJO needs to get out of his mansion and spend a year... or even 3 months in reality.

Anyway....love discussing with you. Merci for responding!

My name's Linda…another American influence…My father was totally in love with Linda Gray former Miss Texas and actress (Sue Ellen in "Dallas"), but I'm known in the internet as lalixlili or Lili by some closed friends. My second name is Arielle (Just like the little Mermaid – I was born way before her), It is a Jew name. So call me whatever you feel like as long as it's not offensive 😆😆😃

Halloween is a celebration from people which was considered to be Barbarians by the ancient Romans. Celtic people worshipped several Gods (for nature, for animals, for each tribe, for natural phenomenon) so it's ironic how monotheistic people celebrate it….😕

You know I watch a lot of Indian TV shows, interviews, documentaries so I'm a bit aware of the cultural background of India. It has nothing to do with France, so I try to understand Indian culture as if I was born there, as an Indian girl😳…Moreover I have a lot of Indian contacts so they explain to me some subtleties that I may misinterpret about Hindi language or state of mind or beliefs.

Some of my French friends only like the dance/singing parts and they just can't relate to the storyline at all, they don't even try🤢. Some think the choreography is weak….I don't think it's a fair point of view…But it's another thread/story…

I like how people always mention Grard Depardieu when it comes to mention a name of a French actor or Amlie for a French movie😊. It's like Western people name SRK or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Let your heart express itself) or K3G (The Indian Family). Another issue is the way they translate Hindi titles into French or English quite ridiculous…In France Kal Ho Na Ho is known as "N-Y Masala"….in English as "An Indian Love Story" Where do they find out such poor titles…? So cheesy!

To point out the differences of perception: an actor as witty as SRK could never be misunderstood as far as his sense of humour is concerned. It's very appreciated to do the show on a chat show in France; otherwise you're qualified as reserved or kind of boring.

If you saw how eccentric some French actors/artists are when they're guests on a show you'd probably think that they're mad and really over the top…

But French people like people who have sense of humour even if it may sound cheap and sometimes really vulgar. It's about shocking and impressing.

I know some people who think that regular Indian people start singing and dancing and jumping around in the streets whenever they want to express something due to BW…😲

I enjoy the fact that Kajol and Bebo were cast for the remake because I guess we're going to have a sparkling interaction between two strong screen presences. So maybe Kjo bets on that opposite pairing and not only on the content of the story…😳

As for Kjo, I do believe that he mingles his own desires and dreams with the content of his scripts. He added elements of SRK's life in all his K movies, his values (Love & Friendship) and his hidden wishes also.

After KANK, Step Mom is a logical sequel if we think about it. After a broken home and two illegitimate lovers flying like the wind among some emotional disaster, then the Patch(ed) up Family House…

As for the mini skirts, they were worn in France and England since the end of the 60's and it was a big Shock some TV reports showed some grand dads watching young girls walking by the streets wearing those skirts with an intriguing lust in their eyes…

In France mini skirts are not in…and in some areas in France if girls wear them they are called bad names…

Yoga isn't in any longer in France, strip dance is in just like Ditta Von Deese'style…

When I watch classic Hindi movies just like with Dilip Kumar I'm really thrilled because we have a French Dilip Kumar named Gerar Philippe but he died soon because of cancer. I see the same brilliant acting and that genius touch for portraying Drama/Tragedy characters.😛

Every country is different. In my country, at 3 almost 90% of children are in school…the legal age is 6, and every child of that age is supposed to be at school.

So everyone has a good education: positive point. Everyone may have a degree. But at the end the competition is tougher…lots of young people have degrees but are unemployed. You have to have contacts thanks to friends and families and godfathers just like in BW or to sleep around….

You know girls wear normal clothes nothing glamorous daily but for parties/nightclubbing they look sexy. There are exceptions of course.

I guess Hindi cinema is westernized to offer the young audience from middle class background an opened window (for those who will go to study in America or England). And don't forget the NRI who are westernized also. NRI have a traditional and a westernized legacy. Kjo's cinema is about making India more tolerant and receptive about differences. Differences which are perceived as normal or common for the West. So when western audiences see KANK they like it because in general they make adultery movies with a bad ending for the cheaters, only Kjo could make it look like a "modern fairy tale" and perhaps they liked it because they had a chance to go through all the disaster so they liked the optimistic part of it not the lies and the cheating itself.

Agree about the part in which you wrote that Kjo needs to get out of his mansion that's why he did for MNIK, he shot in Mumbai slums…So he can do things out of the box for him.

But I guess he's not at fault he has only known the glamorous part of everything that doesn't mean he's not aware of the "true" world or that he isn't sensitive to the Global issues. He just shows the cinema he likes and the beauty of things and relationships he knows about. And he has no other pretentions/ambitions.

As for Valentine's day it's so pass!!!! I don't know anybody who celebrates it properly now. When I was a teenage we used to do write cards to friends or bf but just for fun.

Nowadays we say that Valentine's day is everyday for real lovers…Men usually buy some golden jewellery for their beloved ones or they offer flowers and chocolates. When they're considerate enough to do so....Western men are not the most gallant/romantic ones unless it's the beginning of the love story.

So It's all about perception.

Actually the only movie I've understood well when I watched it was Fida: the theme revenge, the action sequences…

Actually I'd love if my parents chose my fianc because I'm tired with all the "kamineys" around….very tiring…! 😭 It would be easier…. I'd so like something like Vivah, I meet him we see if we can get along together👏.

So it's funny when you talk about going on dates…because I don't like dating, we have to begin again and again all the explanations about you blah blah…I'm too lazy and impatient for that…..And generally the purpose of dating isn't marriage in most of case it's just having a sexual partner with whom you can share your emotional life it doesn't mean that you will get married. Because it often leads to people living together and having children without marriage…Because marriage isn't sacred anymore…And there is a lot of lack of confidence between people about money about love.

Actually all the skin issue in India isn't something new, among black people also they make differences between light and dark black, European people make differences between Blonds (light) and Brunettes (tan) and redheads too. But it's about taste….When western people meet people who bleach themselves they assume that person has deep complexes and that person feels some hatred for him/herself…In France bleach creams are strictly FORBIDDEN…even if some people order them through the internet, they are considered to be harmful for health and negative regarding colored people.

But I don't judge BW stars promoting them, it's legal in India and it has to do with the culture…

I like Chinese and Indian cultures a lot. Hindi cinema has to remain a bit with its original authenticity otherwise it's pointless to call it Hindi cinema….😕
