Both Aishwarya Rai and Susmita Sen started off in the industry at the same time. One was a Ms. World, the other a Ms. Universe. Both stunners of course. Both had already made a name for themselves in the glamour world. Half the battle was already won. They both set out to rule Bollywood and become the next big thing. Media projected them as rivals and to some level they actually were.
Sushmita was called the fiery bengali-beauty while Aish was the more calm poised beauty. The future looked bright but only one become victorius. And how she did!
Aishwarya went on to work in bigger better films like Taal, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, and the more recent Dhoom:2, Guru, and Jodhaa Akbaar. She went on to win two Filmfare Best Actress awards and a myriad of other honours and acclaims. She drapped a sari on Oprah Winfrey, appeared on The Times 100 most Influential People List, chatted with David Letterman, Tyra Banks, Martha Stewarts, 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, etc. Did Hollywood Films like Bride and Prejudice and Pink Panther 2. Has a wax statue at Madame Tusauds(the only Bollywood Actress). Become an interantional star whilst she walked Cannes and even served the jury.
Most importanly, she married into the Bachchan family and became even more powerful than ever before. At 35 years old. Aishwarya is still going strong and working with big names like Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Leela Bhacnsali, Vipul Shah, Mani Ratnam etc.
On the other hand, Sushmita won the Filmfare Best Supporting actress for Biwi No. 1 and her only other notable film is Main Hoon Na. Her Career never rally took off and she never really reigned supreme. She never threatened the No.1 seat or worked in big films with big banners. She didnt win any interantional honors and did not capatilize her fame like Aishwarya did. She has no excting films lined up and she is looking old and not fit. Yet, Aish is still hot property in Bollywood with more than half a dozen big films lined up.
Susmita performed for 1 minute at the IIFA awards, while IIFA is practically Aish's family Awards.
Aishwarya's marriage went on to be a national extravaganza, while no one really knows which one of her countles boyfriends Sushmita is dating.
So what was the reason for Aishwarya's superstardom and Suhmita downfall? One could say that it was Aishwarya's dedication, hardwork, and quest to be the most popular actress that helped her reign supreme. One could say that Sushmita never really cared about being in the rat race or being most popular. One could say that it's about luck and destiny. One could say that Susmita's apparent smoking and drinking had an effect on her career. One could say that Susmita had to take care of her "adopted" daughter.
Whatever the reason maybe, One must admit that in this battle of beauty queens Aish was the clear winner

I think the pun intended about her daughter was unnecessary.

Don't they both look Beautiful and Stunning !! But everyones destiny is not the same !!

It's all about luck and destiny! Both are beautiful, but Ash got the title as most beautiful in world and she went international, also she choose the right films! But something I find interesting is that the Miss Worlds are more successful than the Miss Universe, like Ash and PC!

Because Miss Universes are cursed? 🥱

i guess it was the choice of movies, their individual character, their personality and above all luck and destiny. ash being linked with salman khan did propel her career at some point of time while sushmita did not have that factor. it can be said that in bollywood a few flops is equal to doomed career for many actors.

Looking at the pictures, they both definitely look A LOT better now than they did in the beauty contest.

But yeah, its strange and unfortunate that one became an international success while the other cannot even make it big in Bollywood.
